6 movies starring the great Vincent Price!
PIT AND THE PENDULUM(1961):
of eeriness to this!! And of course being an adaptation of
an Edger Allan Poe work just adds to the atmosphere!!
The only really good actor here is Vincent, with the rest being
just adequate!! The story is wonderfully suspenseful, and the
ending is, unless you know your Poe, quite exciting!! I wanted
to give this an A+, but unfortunately, because of the other
actors in this, I can only give this a B+
From a reviewer from IMDb.com:
This is based VERY loosely on the Edgar Allan Poe story.
Francis Barnard (John Kerr) goes to visit his sister (Barbara
Steele) who has married a nobleman (Vincent Price). He
arrives to find his sister has died under mysterious
circumstances and Price is racked with guilt. He thinks
they buried her alive and starts to go crazy...
The story doesn't make a lot of sense but it still works.
It's beautifully directed by Corman with great use of color
and wide screen. The setting is eerie and it starts to creep
up on you. They are a few scary moments--especially the
final shot that had people in my audience gasping. Price
overacts but in a great way--he keeps the movie hopping.
Steele is hardly in it (and she is dubbed) but she's great
when she is. The supporting cast is OK except for Kerr
who is VERY wooden. Spooky, well-done and lots of
fun. Recommended. - preppy-3

Three short stories, again by Edgar Allan Poe!!:
Morella:
This first story is of a woman who goes to visit her father
after being estranged for 27 years!! She shows up to find,
well, it's a short story and I don't want to give anything
away!! B+
The Black Cat:
The second story stars Peter Lorre along with Vincent Price
and is about a man who really dislikes a cat!! And he has a
penchent for drinking! And he's really mean!! Hmmmm,
wonder what the cat will do!!
The Case Of M. Voldemar:
And part three is about a man who's in constant pain, but
uses hypnotism to regulate it!! The doctor doesn't believe
in this and is a hard sell on the value of the hypnotism!!
But even more than that, Price's character wants this
hypnotist to hypnotize him just before his death for reasons
unknown!! This one also has the great Basil Rathbone(more
well known as Sherlock Holmes of the 30's and 40's)!!!
Over all I give this an A!!
From a reviewer from IMDb.com:
The fourth venture into Poe adaptations for Roger Corman
and Vincent Price sees them taking on the portmanteau
format with a trilogy of creepers.
First off is Morella, which finds Price as a typecast loner
living in a big old mansion with the dead corpse of his wife!
Enter his daughter, who at birth was the reason for Morella's
death and thus Price originally holds a grudge, but of course
there is a twist in the tale.
Secondly is The Black Cat, with Peter Lorre joining Price in
the best of the three tales. Price is a wine tasting dandy,
Lorre a complete drunk and once Price meets Lorre's
beautiful put upon wife, things are going to end badly.
Finally is The Case of M Valdemar which pits Basil Rathbone
into the mix as a devious hypnotist who uses his powers
for what he thinks will be sexually tinged deeds. Price is in
this as well, but spends most of the story as a corpse.
It's a short sharp shock piece of film making, fun and sometimes
stylish, it doesn't however have the requisite scares to marry
up with the welcome black humour that makes the second
instalment the standout.
Still, having three legends of cinema in one picture has to
be a bonus, and The Black Cat alone is worth investing time
with this one. 7/10 - Spikeopath

Vinnie as a VERY mean dude!! Not as an evil minded horror
From a reviewer from IMDb.com:
Devil-worshiping tyrant in a lavish medieval castle hosts a
masquerade feast for his decadent, doomed guests while
Death reigns in the village below. Adaptation of Edgar Allan
Poe's tale is sufficiently-produced on a slim budget, and
has excellent color cinematography, interesting sets and
costumes. Director Roger Corman has little talent for
story-narrative, however, and the picture begins to meander
in the second half. A self-amused Vincent Price strides through
it, but it's a camp performance not a full-bodied one (he wears
out his welcome awfully fast). Corman produced a little-seen
remake in 1989. **1/2 from **** - moonspinner55

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:
In London, a serial-killer drains the blood of females
and the Detective Superintendent Bellaver (Alfred Marks)
and his team are hunting down the so-called Vampire Killer.
Meanwhile in an undefined country that lives a military
dictatorship, the cruel Konratz (Marshall Jones) is climbing
positions killing The Power that Be. When the Vampire Killer
flees from the police, he seeks refugee at the real estate of
scientist Dr. Browning (Vincent Price) and jumps into a tank
of acid. Dr. David Sorel (Christopher Matthews) is intrigued
with the powerful acid and decides to get a sample. He finds
the truth about the research of Dr. Browning.
Many years ago, during the Cold War, the dictatorships in
South America, James Bond, Flint and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,
"Scream and Scream Again" was a cult movie supported by
the names of Vincent Price, Peter Cushing and Christopher
Lee. The story entwines mad scientist with vampire, dictatorship
and spy ring with a terrible music score. However, in the present
days it is a dated mess despite the great cast. My vote is three.

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:
A very fun dramedy tongue-in-cheek horror. Quite a bit of
comedy to keep you entertained and enough horror keep
you interested. Classic Vincent Price fun.
Dr. Phibes is out for revenge. Nine doctors that Phibes blames
for his wife's death and ruined his life. Dr. Phibes is a doctor,
scientist, organist, and biblical scholar -- all of which will play
a part in helping him get his revenge biblical plague style.
Extremely colourful film visually... quite elaborate sets and
costuming. Great casting and an enjoyable story. Mad fun.
Great afternoon cinema that would be great as a double
feature with the follow-up film Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972).

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:
"Madhouse"... is an excellent film from 2 great legendary
film stars (Peter Cushing & Vincent Price).
It's been a long time since I've seen it... and it's better
than I remembered it to be.
"Madhouse" is very creepy, thrilling and suspenseful
horror movie that will leave one on the edge of their
seat engrossed until the very end.
The acting in this film is superb! Cushing & Price at their
best. The entire cast did an excellent job in their roles.
I have to recommend "Madhouse" to anyone that is looking
for a different type of horror film - especially for a Halloween
film festival.
