8 MOVIE ACTION PACK SET
First things first, this set has no closed captioning!!!! Booooo!!
I'm not sure why they call this an "action pack set", as most
of these movies would be better classified as sci-fi! I'm also
not sure why this set was in a $5.00 bin at Walmart, as
most of these movies would be worth that much apiece!!
TRANCERS(1984):
assignment to capture a renegade who's made it his mission
to kill off all of the city council's ancestors, thereby destroying
the council! Done in a very film noir type of format, this is done
excellently!
Tim Thomerson plays his role with gusto, trying to be the next
Humphrey Bogart!! And Helen Hunt is absolutely adorable in this!
This has six sequels, but only Trancers II has both Thomerson and
Hunt! A
A review from IMDb.com:
This low, low budget sci-fier is somewhat derivative, but it's
kind of a take-off on Bladerunner-type movies, rather than a
ripoff of them. Jack Deth (Tim Thomerson) is a detective in
the future who's sent back to 1985 to stop a madman who's
decided to kill the ancestors of the city council of Deth's time.
With the help of Lena (a young Helen Hunt), Deth fights Trancers
(who have fallen under the control of the madman) and his own
culture shock.
It's a short movie (76 minutes), and things move pretty quickly;
plot isn't so much of a focus as a annoying gnat that appears from
time to time. But for being so short, the characters are pretty
well developed - and one huge bonus is that Deth isn't an no
necked, shoot-first idiot, as renegade cops are often portrayed.
Trancers is original, often-funny sci-fi cheese. It's great to see
Thomerson and Hunt - especially Hunt, who looks great. - Dan Franzen

FORTRESS 1(1992):
a penal colony and the attempt by a man and woman sentenced
to it for the crime of having a second child to escape from it!
Not an incredibly great movie, still rather interesting! It even
spawned a sequel(Fortress 2)!
There is a parental advisory for nudity in this! It's dudes!! C+
A review from IMDb:
"Fortress" is a movie which has to do with the resulting
of a prison experience and this is the main subject of this
movie. In this movie we observe how a person change in prison
and how is there a possibility of changing in a better way. In
this movie we observe how a family with an illegal baby tries
to pass the population control and it shows how they feel,
what are their emotions and all of that staff.
I liked this movie because of the plot and the story of it
and because of the interpretation of Christopher Lambert
who plays as John Henry Brennick and he did a great job.
I also liked the interpretation of Kurtwood Smith who plays
as the Prison Director Poe.
Finally I have to tell you that this movie shows us the differences
between a free man and a man in prison and it also shows us how
is it to be in prison. - Thanos Alfie

THE PROPHECY(1995):
points to it(Mary), it was just too religious for me! Not terrible,
just not my cup of tea!
The high points are, of course, Christopher Walken, who
is always entertaining, and the scene between Usiel and
Mary, though it is a little disturbing! C+
A review from IMDb.com:
I absolutely LOVE this movie, I have watched it over
10 times now and love it every time.
Christopher Walken is brilliant as Gabriel, you could
not have had a better person for that role. All the
actors in the movie played their part just superbly,
and even though Viggo Mortensen who played Lucifer
only had a small part. Boy did he play it well.
Brilliant movie, watch it and just totally enjoy it as its
meant to be. Awesome... - Andy L (andy@paradise.net.nz)

CONVICT 762(1997)
of fuel and stops at a penal colony to try to re-fuel, not knowing
that there are only two inmates(?) left and they are battling each
other in a fight to the death!
Many twists and turns, but eventually it becomes obvious what's
going on! This is not the best movie I've watched, but certainly
not the worst! C+
A review from an IMDb.com customer:
Oddly enough the low-budget special effects were about as consistent
with the quality, performance, directing, and plot of the movie itself
so that the set design and apparent animated effects didn't really detract
or diminish the overall impact of this movie. This predictable sci fi mystery
thriller attempts but never succeeds to realizing the occult, horror potential
that the initial plot premise offers here. Interesting there is a rather
consistent effort at logical connective plot outline here, but eventually
becomes manipulated with a mild double twist by the end. Unfortunately
the dark Billy Drago is stereotyped again in this movie and his potential
(there are glimpses here) as a serious actor never is offered to him.
Overall, there is an attempt at something more, but in a number of
cases the director allows cliches and stock characterization to take over
which really spoils the chances this movie had at becoming something
really decent. Nevertheless the story holds together for the most part,
but it still leaves something desired. Too bad. - tabuno

TOTAL RECALL 2070(1999):
this has very little to do with that movie!! The only tieing element
is that it concerns, loosely, the company Rekall! Which, if all
you movie watchers out there will remember, was the name of
the company that offered the dream trips!
There is little action, the acting isn't real crisp, and the story
line was lacking! There is, however, some topical nudity! Over
all, I'd give it a C+
A review from IMDb.com:
The story is based in the same world as "Total Recall"
starring Schwarzenager, but the cinematography and
style borrow much more from Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner".
Moody and atmospheric, the visual style alternately recalls
the smooth yellows and browns of Gattaca, and the stark
contrast of film noir. The script is vague, stylized, and
occasionally hard to follow; in short, everything that you
find in a classic Philip K. Dick story. The soundtrack is moody
and atmospheric, and certainly a cut above the average sci-fi
film.
To be clear: this is not an action film in the way the original
Total Recall was. There are no exciting chase scenes, and
unfights are rudimentary at best. This movie is a revenge
mystery in the tradition of film noir and Blade Runner. Most
of the movie is dialog and character interaction.
If you're looking for an action adventure, you probably won't
like this movie. But if you want a new interpretation of PKD's
world, done in a style very similar to his own, this movie fits
the bill. Personally, I enjoyed this much more than the original
Total Recall. - enroth

IMPOSTER(2001):
aliens that are attacking the Earth from Centauri! They
have perfected a way to duplicate people and then use
the duplicated people to kill thousands!
Gary Sinise plays a scientist that is accused of being one
of these replacements and Vincent D'Onofrio is the accuser!
Both of the guys do a bang up job in their roles, and the
whole movie is done extremely well!! Tony Shaloub(Monk)
has a great role, although brief! B+
A review from IMDb.com:
I have no idea why this movie is such underrated. Yes,
Gary Fleder is no Steven Spielberg or Ridley Scott. He
doesn't have the excellent imagery or visual wonders of
the other directors' films. But at the same time, he has
been more faithful to the original short story than Scott
or Spielberg could have been. He has added only one major
twist which made the film rather more interesting. And
one major credit of the film is that it could capture quite
obviously the feel of paranoia that's been the mainstay
of Philip Dick's most stories.
Gary Sinise is always pleasure to watch on screen. And
in this case his performance is flawless. D'Onofrio plays
the tough security officer with enough passion. Madeline
Stowe is rather frigid in her role.
In short, 'Impostor' is a gripping tale with solid plot and
enough substance. A must see for every genre fan,
regardless of the fact that one of the greatest sci-fi
writer has penned the story. - shanfloyd

CYPHER(2002):
interesting espionage movie!! Jeremy Northam plays his
role exceptionally well, and Lucy Liu is an added attraction!
Many twists and turns, and you never know who to trust! B+
A review from IMDb.com:
Cypher was a movie I was looking forward to after I had read
comments here about it's story being like the works Philip K.
Dick, an author whose paranoid tales I love to read.
As far as plot twists go Cypher never disappointed me, even
though the last plot twist was a bit out there, it had a very cool
ending that was very satisfying. The level of suspense was ok,
this movie was not a nailbiter but it has really nice atmosphere
at times with the opening music theme and the many shady
operatives. A thinking man's movie as well, you need to pay
attention throughout the movie or you will lose track. No problem
in the DVD-age I would say. Overall it was acted very well. Jeremy
Northam and Lucy Liu definitely deserve movies as good as this,
although they don't seem to have found that many in their careers.
Visually the movie is stunning, it is filmed very tight and stylish,
with a few well-dosed effects. This movie probably had a relatively
modest budget but it looks awesome. Overall this was a very pleasant
movie experience.

EQUILIBRIUM(2002):
isn't far!), this is about how a group of people have decided that
the root of all evil is due to feelings, so they have created a shot
that everyone must take to remove emotions!
There are of course those who resist this, and they are immediately
terminated when found out! Christian Bale plays the role of one of
those who are designated to round up said resisters! Turns out that
he is not really wholly into this assignment!
A good movie that goes along at a quick pace, never really lapsing
into dulldrums! Worth a watch or two! B+
A review from IMDb.com:
Equilibrium is a movie that is more fun and a popcorn flick than
other films that it is compared to, such as The Matrix. I think I
enjoyed it more the first time I saw it (about a year or more ago),
but it's still an enjoyable flick.
The second viewing made me notice a lot more issues with the film,
such as dodgy CGI, some cheesy moments and a lot of elements taken
from other films and books and whatnot. But by the end of the film,
I just found that I had fun with it. I guess it just could have been a
more solid film that it was, but it works.
I must say I really enjoyed the last 15 minutes or so. The action is
great and I like the way the story wraps up. It's like the really good
cherry on an okay bowl of ice cream.
This film might be more impressive the first time you watch it than
the second, based on my experience with it. Regardless, it should be
watched by people who are fans of these kinds of sci-fi
films. - TheFilmGuy1
