ALLAN QUATERMAIN: KING SOLOMON'S MINES(1985):
When released, this was just called King Solomon's Mines!
What a fun romp this is! Worth watching over and over
again! Starring Richard Chamberlain and Sharon Stone,
this is a spoof on every adventure film ever made, from
Raiders Of The Lost Arc to High Road To China! Also in
this is one of my favorite character actors, John
Rhys-Davies! Worth its weight in dvd! B+
From Amazon.com:
Camp and cult fans may get a few laughs from this
tongue-in-cheek version of the classic H. Rider Haggard
adventure novel from '80s low-budget outfit Cannon
Films. Richard Chamberlain gives a pun-prone take
on Great White Hunter Allen Quatermain, who is
recruited by Sharon Stone to rescue her father from
the clutches of a German colonel (Herbert Lom)
and a Turkish slaver (John Rhys-Davies), who have
captured him to possess his map to the legendary
diamond mines of King Solomon. Director J. Lee
Thompson (The Guns of Navarone) and the game
cast do what they can with the dodgy special effects
and groaner-filled script; viewers who don't mind
sub-par serial-style thrills might find some kicks
here. --Paul Gaita

ALLAN QUATERMAIN: THE LOST CITY OF GOLD(1986):
Not quite as fresh and fun as King Soloman's Mines, this
one is done pretty straight, with a lot less humor! Returning
are both Richard Chamberlain and Sharon Stone! New
are the great James Earl Jones(Star Wars) and Cassandra
Peterson(Elvira!)! Well worth a watch or two! B
From Amazon.com:
Despite the critical drubbing and box-office failure of
King Solomon's Mines (1985), Cannon Films released this
sequel two years later, again featuring Richard Chamberlain
as adventurer Allan Quatermain and a pre-Basic Instinct
Sharon Stone; the result is marginally better than its
predecessor, and may please "bad film" fans. This time
around, Quatermain is seeking his brother (Martin Rabbett),
who has disappeared while on an expedition to locate
a legendary white tribe in Africa. Quatermain's search
leads him to the title city, which is controlled by evil
Henry Silva (overacting with relish). Director Gary Nelson
and returning writer Gene Quintano achieve a few more
half-hearted laughs here than in its predecessor, and
the cast, which includes James Earl Jones and Cassandra
"Elvira" Peterson, do their best with the material, but
this can't hold a candle to the 1937 and 1950 film
versions of King Solomon's Mines. --Paul Gaita
