AMC MURDER MYSTERIES SET

MALTESE FALCON, THE(1941)

Sam Spade(Humphry Bogart) and his partner are hired
by an attractive woman who is concerned about her
sister who has been whisked off by an apparent
shyster! She's concerned that he's up to no good!

While tailing the suspect, Spade's partner is shot
and killed by who knows who!! A really great twisted
tale!!

Not only is this a great mystery movie, but just a
plain great movie of any kind!! Humphry's acting is
his usual excellence, and those around him do a
great job too!!! In this is Ward Bond(Wagon Train),
Elisha Cook Jr.(Star Trek TOS Episode "Court
Martial", Magnum P.I.[Ice Pick]) and the great
Peter Lorre!!!! A+

A review from an IMDb.com customer:

With a fine combination of cast, characters, story, and
atmosphere, this classic is one of the most entertaining
films of its kind, enjoyable even after several viewings.
It gets you right into the action and introduces you to a
list of interesting personalities, who mesh together nicely
and who are also matched well with the cast members.
Beyond that, it's also effective as a character study
involving greed, trust and distrust, and conflicting
ethics.

Sam Spade is an ideal role for Bogart, giving him plenty
to work with and some very good dialogue as well.
Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet are very entertaining,
providing suitable foils for Bogart, and they really take
the film up a notch. The rest of the cast also works well
(worth mentioning is Elisha Cook, Jr., whose character
doesn't do a lot, but who provides Bogart with some
very amusing moments at his expense). The story is
nicely adapted from the novel, and each scene is
constructed well, with everything moving along nicely
from start to finish.

If you are a fan of either film noir or mysteries, make
this a must-see. There are very few films that work as
well as "The Maltese Falcon". - Snow Leopard

POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE, THE(1946):

I'm not sure what I expected out of this one, except
that it's suppose to be one of the all time greats! For
me, however, this was for the most part boring and
long!! The only actor that I really thought did a great
job was Cecil Kellaway, as the doting faithful and eventually
dead husband!! Perhaps with different actors in the
main rolls this might have been more interesting to
me, but still not sure about that! B-

A review from IMDb.com:

Lana Turner and John Garfield generate sparks in this
excellent crime thriller. Turner plays Cora Smith, a
restless young waitress married to a much-older man
who runs the roadside diner. Garfield plays Frank
Chambers, a drifter who turns up at the diner and is
captivated by Cora. Cecil Kellaway is great as Cora's
naive husband Nick, whose main concern is the diner.
The fact that it is filmed in black and white helps
create the suspenseful atmosphere and highlight
Cora's striking cream outfits. This is far superior to
the 1981 remake, for although it was made under
a strict production code, it smolders with desire
and tension and is an unforgettable classic. - LDRose

Cast of The Postman Always Rings Twice:

Lana Turner ... Cora Smith
John Garfield ... Frank Chambers
Cecil Kellaway ... Nick Smith
Hume Cronyn ... Arthur Keats
Leon Ames ... Kyle Sackett
Audrey Totter ... Madge Gorland
Alan Reed ... Ezra Liam Kennedy
Jeff York ... Blair

BIG SLEEP, THE(1946):

A rich dude with a couple of pretty daughters is
being blackmailed by another dude who supposedly
owns a book store, but who also seems to dabble
in gambling!!

Again starring the great Humphry Bogart as Philip
Marlowe, another wonderful performance by him
and several other cast members, including Dorothy
Malone, Lauren Bacall, Regis Toomey and again with
Elisha Cook Jr.!!

Another wonderful movie with Bogart and Bacall!! A

A review from IMDb.com:

Howard Hawks directs Raymond Chandler's novel on
the silver screen. None other than William Faulkner
is primary screenplay writer. Bogart and Bacall star
in this grand black and white thriller. Private eye
Philip Marlowe(Bogart)is hired by a very wealthy
family to protect a young woman from her own
indiscretions and along the way there is murder,
blackmail, car chases and gun play to deal with.
Right smack in the middle of this complex case
Marlowe finds time to fall in love with his client's
eldest daughter(Bacall). Murder galore does not
phase our cool detective with the cigarette hanging
from his thin lips.

Flawless acting from Bogart and Bacall. There is
a very talented supporting cast that includes
Regis Toomey, Martha Vickers, Elisha Cook Jr.,
Bob Steele and John Ridgely. Then there is the
charming Dorothy Malone that sizzles in her short
time on screen. Very witty dialogue and colorful
characters make this a classic among classics. - Michael O'Keefe

Cast of The Big Sleep:

Humphrey Bogart ... Philip Marlowe
Lauren Bacall ... Vivian Rutledge
John Ridgely ... Eddie Mars
Martha Vickers ... Carmen Sternwood
Dorothy Malone ... Acme Book Shop Proprietress
Peggy Knudsen ... Mona Mars
Regis Toomey ... Chief Inspector Bernie Ohls
Charles Waldron ... Gen. Sternwood
Charles D. Brown ... Norris - the Butler
Bob Steele ... Lash Canino
Elisha Cook Jr. ... Harry Jones
Louis Jean Heydt ... Joe Brody

DIAL M FOR MURDER(1954):

This is an Alfred Hitchcock movie, and you can tell
it right off the bat!! There's just something about his
films that screams Hitch! Starring the beautiful Grace
Kelly, and the great Bob Cummings(Love That Bob),
along with the equally great Ray Milland, this is about
a woman in love with one man(Bob), and married to
another(Ray)! Her husband finds out and plans the
"perfect murder"!! A

A review from IMDb.com:

Surprisingly this is a lesser-known Hitchcock film but still
stands up today as an exciting thriller full of twists and turns.

Ray Milland is excellent as ex-tennis pro Tony Wendice
who decides to commit the perfect murder of his wife
(Grace Kelly) when he learns of her affair with Robert
Cummings (who isn't given much to do). In fact, Milland's
subtle performance has you wanting the murder plot to
work! Though it has to be said, Kelly's helpless female
turn does not help in this regard either.

Hitchcock's skill here is to totally involve the viewer in
the labyrinthine plot involving keys, telephone calls
and stockings so that at the end of the film you haven't
even noticed that virtually all the scenes are in one room.

If you like clever, wordy films with a touch of humour
then I recommend `Dial M For Murder'. 8/10 - Philip Borrington

Cast of Dial M For Murder:

Ray Milland ... Tony Wendice
Grace Kelly ... Margot Mary Wendice
Robert Cummings ... Mark Halliday
John Williams ... Chief Inspector Hubbard
Anthony Dawson ... Captain Lesgate (Swann)
Leo Britt ... The Storyteller
Patrick Allen ... Detective Pearson
George Leigh ... Detective Williams
George Alderson ... First Detective
Robin Hughes ... Police Sergeant O'Brien
