SUPERMAN - CARTOON CRAZE #2
These are all cartoons from the 40's! Probably
played as an addendum to feature movies being
shown! They are all quite short(about 10 minutes
each) with good animation and stories, especially
considering the age!!
VOLCANO:
(July 10th, 1942)
This is about a volcano, Mt. Monokoa, that has
been dormant for centuries, and now shows
signs of coming back to life and threatening
the inhabitants of the small island where it
is!! B+
From an IMDb.com customer
"Volcano" is a very weak installment of the
short-lived Superman series from the Fleischer
Brothers. I say weak because they made Lois
very despicable and I really found myself
rooting for her to die! This is because Lois
and Clark are sent to cover the same story--a
volcano is about to erupt (WHY WOULD
YOU NEED TO GO NEXT TO THE MOUNTAIN
TO COVER THIS?!). However, Lois wants
the story for herself and deliberately
sabotages Clark so he will be left out in
the cold. So, when the volcano explodes,
she is about to die and Clark jumps to
save her. She learns NOTHING from the
situation other than selfishness and
stupidity pays! I really wish they'd made
Lois less a jerk and victim and more a
tough-as-nails and resourceful lady
like they did in "Secret Agent" (1943).
Overall, a rather weak installment, as
fomenting hatred for your female lead
is NOT a positive thing! - planktonrules

This has Lois and Clark covering a circus, and
while they are there, a monkey accidently
releases a giant ape!! B+
From an IMDb.com customer
This is the ninth, and final, Superman cartoon
made by Max and Dave Fleischer. While the
rest of these initial series of animated shorts
are virtually made by the same crew, the
Fleischer brothers are nowhere near them
since they would get ousted by Paramount
due to financial and personal troubles between
them. In this one, Lois and Clark are assigned
to cover the circus which isn't one of their
more exciting projects...until a gorilla is
inadvertently let loose by a monkey and
causes havoc to his surroundings. As always,
Lois is the damsel in distress and it's up
to Superman to rescue her...Quite exciting
seeing all the animals reacting to the gorilla's
presence and Superman struggling to keep
the simian at bay though, as always, it all
ends a bit too soon. Still, Terror on the
Midway is well worth a look. - tavm

A gigantic plane has been created to carry
smaller planes and other defensive items
to help out in the war effort(remember, this
is 1942!!)l! The Japanese are determined to
destroy it!! B+

A SUPERMAN Cartoon.
When America unveils its colossal new bomber,
the JAPOTEURS, an elite force of Japanese spies
& saboteurs, strikes. Stealing the behemoth,
with intrepid girl reporter Lois Lane aboard,
and the destination either Tokyo or destruction,
it's time for Superman to get involved...
This was another in the series of excellent
cartoons initially created by Max Fleischer
for Paramount Studio. They feature great
animation and taut, fast-moving plots. Meant
to be shown in movie theaters, they are miles
ahead of their Saturday Morning counterparts.

Alexander does the honors for Lois Lane. - Ron Oliver

Someone is dressing up like Superman and
pulling a bunch of heists!!! But he tries one
too many times by pulling a heist at the
opera that Lois and Clark are covering!! B+

Lois and Clark are in Yokohama(they don't
say why) and since he's there, Superman
decides he might as well do a little sabotage!! B+
From an IMDb.com customer
"Eleventh Hour" is a very strange Superman
cartoon from the Fleischer Brothers. It even
begins strangely--with an odd variation from
the usual 'Faster than a speeding bullet'
introduction. What also is strange is that
Lois and Clark are correspondents in Japan
DURING the war! This is a nutty
premise--especially because Clark/Superman
spends his nights destroying the Japanese
military machine. In fact, it makes you
wonder why it took so long to end the war!
But the story is so illogical that you just
need to sit back and accept it for what it
is--mindless WWII era propaganda. Enjoyable
and well animated but also pretty silly. Not
surprisingly, you don't see this one of TV
any more though if you are curious, you
can download it for free at archive.org. - planktonrules

A SUPERMAN Cartoon.
Intrepid reporter Lois Lane discovers that
DESTRUCTION INC. - a small band of murderous

So a gal is accused of murdering a one Dr.
Jordon, and Clark and Lois gets wind of
some information that could clear her!!! B+
From an IMDb.com customer
For once, Clark Kent is told of a story and
tries to hide it from Lois Lane, who follows
him anyway. What would a Superman cartoon
be without having to rescue her?
An Egyptologist is found dead, believed to be
murdered - his young assistant is arrested and
convicted of his murder. Another archaeologist
believes that his colleague was killed by the
mummy's curse - the Curse of King Tush
(pronounced like the ZZ Top song, but this
isn't what they were looking for).
As Clark is shown around the museum (and
Lois sneaking around in the shadows), Clark
presses something on the mummy's coffin,
ejecting a poisoned needle and opening the
sarcophagus. A medallion on the mummy
starts to glow and opens the sarcophagi of
the giant guards.
They start destroying the museum, which,
for reasons unknown has a large fire for
lighting. Can Superman save the day or
does the supernatural win out? - jtyroler

Back to the war, this one is about, some
German soldiers disguising themselves as
natives so that they can do their dirty
work undetected!! B+
From an IMDb.com customer
For reasons never explained Lois Lane is
flying with some man over a jungle with
top secret American war secrets. Unknown
to them the Nazis have taken over the native
tribe in the jungle (for some reason the Nazis
dress like the Ku Klux Klan!). They shot down
the plane--the man dies but Lois lives--she
hides the plans and is captured. The Nazis
threaten to torture her but she won't tell
them a thing. So they decide to have the
natives burn her at a stake (!!!). Will
Superman find her in time to save her.
Vague story and plot loopholes galore mar
this cartoon. But it is VERY colorful with
the expected great animation. Also there
are some real surreal scenes when Lois is
being burned. It's worth seeing just for that.
I give this a 7. - Wayne Malin
