BOGIE & BACALL SET

Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in four movies
that of course were better than most films made in
the last 20 years!!!!!

TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT(1944):

A very good movie about the tensions between
the French and the Germans early on in the war!
This pits a couple of Americans against the forces
of evil putting them right in the middle of a power
struggle that they really don't want to be involved
in! Bogart owns a fishing boat and is asked by a
friend to help out some friends of his get from
point A back to Martinique, where he runs his
business!! He reluctantly agrees, and much trouble
ensues!! Bogart and Bacall work perfectly together,
and having the great Walter Brennan in this is an
added plus!! Also here is Hogey Charmichael and
a very young Sheldon Leonard!! A

A review from the back of the DVD:

Skipper Harry Morgan (Humphrey Bogart) reluctantly
transports a French Resistance leader and his wife,
running afoul of evil police captain Renard (Dan
Seymour). He also makes time with sexy young
singer Lauren Bacall.

Bogart is great as usual. Bacall shines in her film
debut. Quite possibly her best role. Their chemistry
and legendary scenes together are the film's main
selling points. Walter Brennan is memorable as
Harry's drunkard sidekick Eddie. Yes, the plot is
bare bones similar to Casablanca and yes, it bears
little resemblance to the Hemingway novel. But so
what? It's a classic movie with great dialogue, nice
pacing, and fun characters. A must-see for Bogart
fans or anybody really who enjoy good movies. - utgard14

THE BIG SLEEP(1946):

The second outing for Bogie and Bacall, this one is
about the now famous detective Philip Marlowe
and is awesomely played by Bogart!! The whole
story starts as an old millionaire calls on Marlowe
to help him with a blackmail case which involves
his daughter and a gambling establishment owner!
This quickly escalates to several murders and more
blackmail!! This is a great movie, with excellent acting
by all involved!! With the two main actors are Elisha
Cook Jr.(Magnum P.I., The Maltese Falcon!), Dorothy
Malone(Peyton Place) & Regis Toomey(Burk's Law,
His Girl Friday)! A

A review from Amazon.com:

Howard Hawks directs Raymond Chandler's novel
on the silver screen. None other than William Faulkner
is primary screenplay writer. Bogart and Bacall star in
this grand black and white thriller. Private eye Philip
Marlowe(Bogart)is hired by a very wealthy family to
protect a young woman from her own indiscretions
and along the way there is murder, blackmail, car
chases and gun play to deal with. Right smack in the
middle of this complex case Marlowe finds time to
fall in love with his client's eldest daughter(Bacall).
Murder galore does not phase our cool detective
with the cigarette hanging from his thin lips.

Flawless acting from Bogart and Bacall. There is
a very talented supporting cast that includes Regis
Toomey, Martha Vickers, Elisha Cook Jr., Bob Steele
and John Ridgely. Then there is the charming Dorothy
Malone that sizzles in her short time on screen. Very
witty dialogue and colorful characters make this a
classic among classics. - Michael O'Keefe

This is just a list of the main particulars!

1945/1946 COMPARISONS:
This is very interesting! This was actually finished in 1945,
however, it sat on the shelves of WB for over a year, mainly
because of WW II coming to an end and the movie companies
wanting to push out the movies that pertained to that war!!
During that time, Lauren Bacall had been in another movie
of which she garnered very unfavorable reviews because of
the way that she was used in that movie!! An agent named
Charles K. Feldman approached Jack Warner and suggested
that he re-shoot several of the scenes that she was in for one
reason or another, and Warner agreed!! So after the re-shoots
and the re-editing the film was finally released!! This shows
just which scenes were changes and/or deleted!! Again, very
interesting!!

Another non-video special, this talks about the movie and

DARK PASSAGE(1947):

The lesser of the four movies in this set, still none-
the-less worth watching!! Bogey plays a convict who
manages to break out of San Quentin prison and go
on the hunt for the real murderer of his wife! Shortly
after breaking out, he runs into Bacall and sparks fly!

Also in this is the great Agnes Morehead(Bewitched)
who plays an integral part in the movie!! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

"Dark Passage" stars Bogart and Bacall in a classic cinema
noir story about a man (Bogart) who escapes prison to
prove his innocence of the murder of his wife. The entire
film follows Bogart. Almost the entire first part of the film
is filmed from his perspective. Eventually, he realizes he
is too recognizable, so he undergoes facial surgery to
modify his looks. When his new face is revealed, it is
Bogart's face.

Bogart finds an ally in Bacall's character, who feels that
he is innocent. She assists him in eluding the police.
However, it seems wherever he turns, he runs into
another threat.

I love the cinematography. The San Francisco surroundings
provide great scenery. The score is also marvelous. The
supporting characters are noirish--not exactly caricatures
or comic bookish, but quirky and memorable. Other posters
have noted a Hitchcockian style, justifiably so. The similarities
are impossible to ignore. And, like "Rear Window", our
protagonist is partially disabled and has to rely upon the
help of his beautiful accomplice.

I find "Dark Passage" to be enjoyable primarily due to the
ending, however, which is satisfying. I can overlook the
coincidences in the story. The only thing that distracted
me from immersion in the plot is the method of demise
of one character, which I won't detail here.

This is a noir classic and, as part of the Bogie/Bacall
filmography, it is a cinemaphile's must-see. - atlasmb

KEY LARGO(1948):

Nearly no action, though there certainly is some, and
a setting all in one place(the Largo Hotel), this is a very
intense character study that is totally driven by that!!
Almost solely centered on Bogart, Robinson & Barrymore,
this also has Bacall who really doesn't do a whole lot,
but is key to the whole plot!! Claire Trevor is excellent
as the former musical star, and the former love of
Robinson's! The rest of the cast does a great job in
their respective roles!! Certainly not an action packed
movie, but a drama that's very well done!! A-

A review from the back of the DVD:

Exciting but at the same time lacking in atmosphere
and depth; almost entirely held up by Robinson and
Bogart, I wish Bacall were more in the film, as well
as this would have been a greater success, had this
theatre-to-film been translated better, as with
Olivier/Caine's performances in "Sleuth".

There are some apparent hits here though. It's
always lovely to see Bogart/Bacall, and Robinson's
psychopathic traits shine through wonderfully at
times. I liked the ending and on the whole, it's a
good film, but really it's got nothing on films like
"The Big Sleep" and "To Have And Have
Not". - Niklas Pivic
