CARNIVAL OF SOULS(1962):
In the set: 100 Greatest Terror Classics
This is very creepy, mostly due to the music! Car
with three girls in it crashes, next thing we see is
one of the girls walking out of the river, and then
watch as she tries to go on with her normal life.
NOT!!! My grade is for the ending, which I admit
I didn't see coming!! C+

This is one eerie movie. Very artfully filmed
and dramatically acted out. This is a low budget
film with a high quality standard - proof that
you do not need millions to create an effective
horror-thriller. All that is needed is a good
story/script, decent actors, good location,
great cinematography and a strong director.
Mary Henry is in an accident with her friends - she
survived drowning but her friends died. She takes
a job as a church organist in another town where
there is an old pavilion which used to house
a carnival - long gone now but the run-down
pavilion remains. Mary finds herself haunted
by a soul from the carnival. There is a surprise
ending to this film for first time viewers.
I found Gothic overtones (or undertones) to this
film... maybe the lost souls - the old carnival
giving that feeling.
If you like movies surrounding ghosts/souls,
zombies, carnivals, strange films, and older
horror-thrillers then you might enjoy this
particular film.
