one is starring Sidney Toler, the last three are
starring Roland Winters!! These are on 4 discs
all in separate containers!!

SHADOWS OVER CHINATOWN - TOLER(1946):

Charlie's on the hunt for a missing woman in
San Francisco where there have been a couple
of very gruesome murders(decapitated as well
as arms removed)!! Also he meets a woman on
a bus and she's looking for her granddaughter
who's also missing!! Insurance is the reason in
this one!! This is surprisingly short!!!

This brings back #2 son, Jimmy, who's much
better than #3 and 4!!!! It also brings back the
chauffeur Birmingham Brown, which is a little
too much slap stick for me!! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

This episode is a bit edgier. First of all, the
murder being investigated is much more vicious
than others. Charlie is working for an insurance
company and is investigating this death but also
is working on a personal interest missing persons
case. We have here the reappearance of the
Charlie's Number Two Son, Jimmy, who has much
more personality than son Tommy. Mantan is
there again to provide zaniness. That aside, there
are several twists and turns in this plot that make
it pretty entertaining. Charlie seems to take more
of a personal interest in the results of this case
because of the brutality of everything. As is
always the case, there are some excellent
suspects and a love story to boot - Hitchcoc

DOCKS OF NEW ORLEANS - WINTERS(1948):

Much better than the last movie!! This one has
one of those man alone in the room by himself
and he gets killed while others are all together
in an adjoining room!! Charlie shows up for a
meeting with self-same guy, and of course he
is on the case!! A

A review from IMDb.com:

This is one of the Roland Winters episodes.
He is really weak as Chan. Of all the non- Asians
who played Charlie, he is the least Asian appearing
of all. He delivers lines poorly and is, frankly, boring.
This is another episode about international terror.
Apparently, some guys are trying to kill masses
of people by producing a kind of poison gas.
Once again, while everyone is in a room, a guy
goes into his office and dies mysteriously.
There is something to do with radio tubes
and high frequency sound. It's a good idea,
but the way everything unfolds is so far
fetched. Another weakness is how little
Mantan and Tommy are utilized. Since
Chan is so lame, these guys are normally
the fun. Winters seems to have no chemistry
with these guys. One can see the series gasping
for air as we move to the last episodes. - Hitchcoc

SHANGHAI CHEST - WINTERS(1948):

A judge is murdered, and his nephew is at first the
most likely suspect!! Meanwhile, Charlie's #2 son sees
a man breaking into a house through a window along
with the chauffeur!! This of course leads them to be
landed in jail!!! Back to the murdered judge, fingerprints
are found at the murder scene, but they belong to a
dead man!!! More murders, more fingerprints, more
confusion!! Charlie's on the job!!! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

This is one of the most entertaining of the later
Charlie Chan films, with Roland Winters obviously
enjoying himself in the role of the famed detective.
The mystery is clever enough to hold up until the
final revelation of who done it, with many humorous
and atmospheric scenes leading up to the finale.

The low brow Forties humor may not appeal to
all modern viewers , but for die-hard Chan fans,
such priceless moments as well meaning Number
Two son Tommy and nervous chauffeur Birmingham
ending up in jail, after attempting to apprehend
a supposed crook ,who turns out to be a respectable
citizen, are what make these Monogram Chan
movies so much fun. Milton Parsons turns in one
of his patented undertaker performances as an
evasive mortician questioned by Chan, with a
very funny bit by a pretty Asian receptionist,
who responds to Charlie's polite greeting in
his native language with a beaming, " I'm sorry,
but I do not speak Chinese." The slightest hint
of parody lurks beneath such classic moments
as a suspect who had much to gain, being
found over a dead relative ,holding the murder
weapon; a faintly suspicious butler, and a
mysterious figure in black creeping around
the various murder scenes. This is a thoroughly
enjoyable old mystery, with plenty of atmosphere
and laughs for Charlie Chan devotees. - mlraymond

GOLDEN EYE, THE - WINTERS(1948):

This is actually pretty good!! Charlie's been approached
to look into the attempts on a miner's life which takes
him to Arizona!! The boys(#2 son and Birmingham),
along with Chan, go to a dude ranch to use this as
a cover. The mine appears to be making a comeback
as there is now gold in it where there was none before!! A

A review from IMDb.com:

Oriental sleuth Charlie Chan(Roland Winters),
Tommy Chan(Victor Sen Young)and chauffeur
Birmingham(Mantan Moreland)head to Arizona
at the request of a Mr. Manning(Forrest Taylor),
owner of The Golden Eye mine. Manning finds
it very odd that his mine losing a lot of money
for a good while suddenly has become a gold
bonanza. Lt. Mike Ruark(Tim Ryan) is also
investigating Manning's mine manager Driscoll
(Ralph Dunn)on a different matter that may
help Chan's investigation of the situation at
The Golden Eye. This mystery franchise is
nearing its end and you can tell by the lack
of any scenery and flat dialog. But this is
a Charlie Chan flick, man. Just not one of
the best. Other players: Wanda McKay,
Evelyn Brent and Bruce
Kellogg. - Michael O'Keefe
