CHARLIE CHAN WARNER OLAND SET #1

A collection of 4 Charlie Chan movies! The first
three are starring Sidney Toler, the last one is
the first one starring Roland Winters!! These
are on 4 discs, but they're STACKED instead of
being on separate dividers!! Not my favorite
way of storing discs!!

EREN TRECE(1931):
(Spanish Version of Charlie Chan Carries On)
(This movie is on the same disc as Charlie Chan
In Shanghai)

This is in Spanish(duh), but fortunately for me
they have dubbed this in English!! There's a
murder in a hotel where several tourists are
staying in London, while on a trip around the
world!! The English police are trying to work it
all out before they take off for their next port
but they're not quick enough, and off they go
to Italy! In Italy, one of the main suspects is
found dead and suspected of suicide!! However,
his lady friend says that's not possible!! Up to
this point, Charlie has not been seen at all
in this!! It's not til the group gets to Honolulu
that we finally get to see the great sleuth!!
This would probably be a great movie if it
were able to be seen in the original English
language with Warner Oland! But it is what
it is, and this is ok, but not great!! And I hate
having to read movies!!! B

A review from IMDb.com:

(Spanish version) This movie is so badly directed
and acted to be embarrassing to all associated
with or viewing this movie. It is a complex plot
with continuity problems and intentional miscues.

There is some almost extreme overacting, overreacting
to situations. I have seen other early movies where
the acting was extreme. At least the male actors were
not wearing lipstick and eye makeup as with many
movies of this era.

In one scene in the telegraph office, a man shoots
from between a window and a door through the window.
We see only the arm extending from the shooter which
places him between the door and window. He shots then
"disappears" without going past the door and would have
to had duck-walked or crawled under the window.
Someone is out the door looking in about 3 seconds.
He sees nobody. That's almost impossible. Poor
staging! Unbelievable action!! It is watchable but
almost laughable without intending to be funny.
And so many unresolved red herrings! I would
write a synopsis but this is the most confusing
story I have seen in a long time. Many plot threads
opened and left open for a long time or forever.

I am hoping for a good group-in-a-room ending
with lots of explanation to make sense of this mess.

The group scene happened and the villain was
caught but, by the end, you won't care much who
it was... - mikey-242-435767

A review from IMDb.com:

Early Warner Oland 'Chan'. Atmospheric and
wonderfully ancient. Plenty of charm. Wonderful
example of early film making. Check out Ray
Milland with that full head of hair!! Taken on

Charlie Chan In London Trailer:
Again, just what it says!!

A review from IMDb.com:

Charlie Chan goes to Paris, he says on a vacation,
but is investigating the Lamartine bank (the richest
and most prestigious bank in France) where several
forged bonds have circulated across Europe. Nardi,
one half of an Apache dance and Chan's Parisian
contact, is killed just before he can get any information
from her. Looking through Nardi's room, Chan finds
a book of her notes, which point suspicion on Albert
Dufresne, a worker in the bank. Dufresne is murdered
by a mysterious beggar, Xavier Marcel and the blame
is placed on Yvette Lamartine, daughter of the bank's
president. Chan, son Lee, and Victor Descartes (Yvette's
fiancé) must uncover the counterfeiting ring and
discover who is disguising himself as Marcel. This
is one of the better Chan's in the series, with plenty
of mysterious goings-on throughout the film. Nice
set locations in the film giving the audience feelings
of the Parisian nightlife, dark alleys, and even sewer
system. This is the first film to feature Keye Luke
as number one son Lee, which gives Oland to play
Chan as the fatherly genial type, which is an
improvement over the previous entry, Charlie
Chan in London. Rating, 8. - Mike-764 (michaelnella@yahoo.com)

CHARLIE CHAN IN EGYPT(1935):

Charlie's in Egypt trying to find an archeologist
who has gone missing!! Many strange happenings
befall the sleuth, and many suspects for Chan to
muddle through!! Then of course there's the issue
of some of the artifacts going missing, and apparently
ending up in places that they should not be!!

This would be another great Chan movie, but
unfortunately there is a character that is quite
annoying, Snowshoes!!! The character is played
by Stepin Fetchit who portrays the character as
a very dumbed down black man! Very annoying,
and very insulting to the black community, both
then and now!!! B

Charlie Chan In London Trailer:
Again, just what it says!!

A review from IMDb.com:

This, one of the early films, has charm, naivete, and
atmosphere that the later ones lack. The King Tut
discovery still had long reaching effects and people's
interest. Of course, the other quality it possesses is
Warner Oland, the first(well known) and best actor
to portray Charlie Chan. The reference 'inscrutable'
truly applies. Where the later portrayals, for many
reasons, had become caricatures, and eventually
cheap B-movie(2nd film) matinee 'fill-ins'. - lousvr

CHARLIE CHAN IN SHANGHAI(1935):

This again has Charlie on "holiday", this time
in Shanghai!! But again, he quickly gets pulled
in on a murder, this time of a friend of his that
tells Chan that he has something big to share
with Charlie!! Shortly after his death, Charlie
also has an attempt on his life!! Charlie's #1

Charlie Chan In London Trailer

A review from IMDb.com:

This was another very-solid entry in the long-running
series that mainly featured either Warner Oland
or Sidney Toler as "Charlie Chan." It's generally
considered that Oland's films were superior. I
enjoy both of them and, after just completing
watching the Chan DVD set that were all Toler's
films, this return to Oland was a shocker in a way.

I say "shocker" mainly because Chan was so nice
and respectful to his kid. In the latter films, Toler's
Chan does nothing but insult his son, whichever
one accompanies him on various cases. Here, Oland's
warmth for his Number One Son "Lee" (Keye Luke)
is more than evident and "Lee" helps keep the case
alive with a daring rescue of his kidnapped father.

The story is played much straighter, too, than the
Toler versions. There is still levity with Chan' many
profound-yet-funny proverbs but this is an action-packed
short story played more like the mysteries they were
supposed to be. Good stuff - ccthemovieman-1
