CHARLIE CHAN IN THE SECRET SERVICE(1944):

This is about an inventor who is working on some kind
of bomb/torpedo who gets killed! Chan gets called out
to the case, and of course his #3 son is tagging along!!
Also showing up is Chan's #2 daughter!!! A-

A review from IMDb.com:

This movie has some of the best film noir photography
I have seen in all the Charlie Chan entries. This is one I
am still waiting to have issued on DVD, so I can enjoy
those visuals.

Storywise, it's a decent story with an interesting cast
of suspects. My complaint is fairly minor: it is a little
below-average in the amount of humorous Charlie
Chan proverbs that we Chan fans love so much.
Otherwise, I enjoyed the movie.

Although not Charlie's official chauffeur-assistant
in here as he was in most of these Monogram Chan
films, Mantan Moreland ("Birmingham Brown") plays
his usual role as a guy helping out and adding humor.
He's a likable guy as are all of Charlie's kids, two of
them joining in this mystery. We get Number Three
Son "Tommie" (Benson Fong) and daughter "Iris"
(Marianne Quon. Chan's kids are always nosy,
goodhearted and, in the latter-day films, not that
helpful.

A few quick action scenes help keep things rolling
and, as usual, we get Charlie's summary of the
case at the end in which our hero exposes the
crook. Overall, is this a great Charlie Chan film?
No, it's average....but just average is still good
to me. I love these films and hope all of them
eventually are available on disc. - NativeTexan

THE CHINESE CAT(1944):

A rich woman's newest husband is shot to death
behind locked doors!! There is however a secret
passageway that she knew about, as she takes
her daughter and maid into the room by said
passageway!! Looks pretty bleak for the rich
dudette!!!!

The case goes dead, and the police give up!
However, the step-daughter goes to Charlie
about the death and asks for his help, through
Charlie's #3 Son!!! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

Chan fans and film buffs will enjoy this
better-than-average Monogram film. True,
with the exception of "Charlie Chan in the
Secret Service" none of the Monogram series
comes close to the 20th C FOX entries, but the
story is serviceable and enjoyable. Mantan
Moreland shows his best Vaudevillian stage
takes, and of note is Joan Woodbury, the
Woodbury soap heiress, in at least her third
appearance in the Chan series. The other
two I know of are "Charlie Chan at the Opera"
where she has no lines and dances on a table
top during the opera, and "Charlie Chan on
Broadway" where she is Douglas Fowley's
love interest and performs what I call "the
sashay dance." - NativeTexan

THE JADE MASK(1945):

Another locked room with a dead man, except
there's no body!! This one has Charlie's #4 son,
Eddie!! The dead man was working on a secret
project that the government was interested in!! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

This is one of the strangest Charlie Chan films
I've even seen, probably because many of the
suspects were so weird. That, and the building
in which most of the action takes place - with
all its secret and motorized panels - is odd to see.

The story: an unpopular family member-scientist,
"Dr. Harper," (Frank Reicher) has developed a
chemical that makes wood as strong as steel.
Our government could use this, especially in
time of war, so they are obviously concerned
when the scientist is found murdered. They
call on Charlie Chan to help solve the case and
get the formula. Charlie winds up getting help
from his Number Four Son "Eddie," someone
I never saw in any other Chan films. He was
the bespectacled "intellectual" son in the family
and another likable Chan.

Anyway, someone is after the formula - for
the money it could bring them - and is culprit
is probably from the big family where the
doctor was working. All of these people are
portrayed as guilty-looking so the audience
has a hard time figuring out who's the killer.

The "whodunnit" is wrapped up in the end
with a gathering of everyone while Chan
explains his discoveries. That was the only
problem with the film: the ending was unsatisfying
and bit unrealistic. - ccthemovieman-1
