CHARLIE CHAN SIDNEY TOLER SET #2
A collection of 2 Charlie Chan movies! These
are starring Sidney Toler!! These also have #3
son, Tommy Chan helping out his father!!
These are on 1 disc, and they have NO closed
captioning!! BOOOOOOOO!!!
THE SCARLET CLUE(1945):
This is a strange tale!! They show one of the bad dudes right
off the bat!! Anyway, Charlie's out after someone who's out
after radar secrets from the U.S.! So many good suspects,
so many misdirecting clues!! This is, for the most part, centered
in or around a building that holds a radio broadcasting studio,
a TV broadcasting studio, and a radar developing company!
With Mantan Moreland & Benson Fong who provide a lot
of comic relief along with Mantan's partner, Ben Carter!!
This is quite short!! A
A review from IMDb.com:
Monogram Studios took on the Charlie Chan Series
after Fox. Some are Not Too Bad like this one that has
a Bit of a Bounce to it. The Radio/Television Station is
Neat to see from 1945 and there is a Science Laboratory
with Cool Looking Instruments that Buzz and Emit
Squiggly White Lines.
There is some Irony that Monogram like other B-Movie
Studios were put Out of Business by Television, but that
was a Few Years Off and in '45 the Impact of the Boob
Tube was Unforeseeable.
This Movie is also Highlighted by Mantan Moreland's
Verbal Sparring with Partner Ben Carter and His Bug
Eyes and Spooky Shenanigans are at a Minimum.
Number 3 Son, Tommy is on hand to Pal with Moreland
from Scene to Scene and take Charlie's (Sidney Toler
looking a bit tired) Verbal Lashings. A Couple of Interesting
Side-Suspects and a bit of Cleverness makes this One of
the Better of the Monogram Chan Cheapies. - LeonLouisRicci

A case of people being killed by "the Shanghai cobra"!! No
information given on just what that is!! But apparently it's
a poison that's being used to kill people who are somehow
connected to a plan to steal some radium from a bank!!
What a very interesting part of this movie: when people
go to the jukebox to play a song, this shows a girl watching
the place through some sort of video and then she plays
the song for them!! I've never heard of this, and am going
to do some research on this!!
Many scratches and pops in this!! A
A review from IMDb.com:
I particularly like this Chan as the first in which Leon
Tommy and Birmingham become partners in crime
(pun intended). Notice Tommy reaching around and
holding Birmingham's hand - there's real affection and
togetherness there, although Birmingham doesn't
necessarily want to follow Tommy. Are the plot twists
nutty? Of course, it's a B movie, not Citizen Freakin' Kane,
folks. They were making four of these a year - what do
you want? Toler's Chan is more assertive than Oland -
Toler orders the bank president around more than once.
There's far less of Birmingham popping his eyes out in
this one, and fewer 'feets don't fail me now' talk. Tommy
seems destined for trouble, but otherwise this episode
plays it straighter than some, more humorous Chans.
IF more people took these films for what they are - and
not compare them to The Third Man - they might find
themselves having a little more fun in life. - jonfrum2000
