CHARLIE CHAN SIDNEY TOLER SET #5
A collection of 7 Charlie Chan movies! They are
all starring Sidney Toler!! These are on 4 discs, and
unfortunately they are doublebsided!!! Not my favorite,
but better than stacked discs!!
CHARLIE CHAN IN PANAMA(1940):
Charlie Chan plays a hatter in Panama as a secret
agent for the U.S. Government!! He's been informed
that there is going to be an attempt at sabotage on
the canal when the U.S. fleet comes through!! A
A review from IMDb.com:
"Charlie Chan in Panama" from 1940 finds
Charlie (Sidney Toler) undercover as a shop
owner to stop an espionage plot that would
take out part of the Panama Canal and trap
a Navy fleet en route to the Pacific.
No dearth of suspects here and everyone
acts guilty.
Among the cast are Sen Yung as Jimmy, Lionel
Atwill, Mary Nash, Chris-Pin Martin, and Jack
LaRue. Jimmy as usual gets into trouble, but
he's also a big help.
This is a lively story, with humor and drama,
with a bit of a propaganda thrown in. At the
end, Charlie reminds us that a strong military
will insure the peace. Didn't work out that
way, alas. - blanche-2

An Inspector from Scotland Yard comes to Charlie
to request help in a strangler case!! As Charlie is
filling in his boss, the inspector gets strangled in
Charlie's office!!! Of course, Charlie takes over the
investigation on the cruise ship!!
This is one of those strange tales that actually
show the murderer right off the bat!! Though
he is disguised pretty well!!
The great Leo G. Carroll(The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,
Topper) is in this!! A
A review from IMDb.com:
From 1940, "Murder Cruise" sports a nice cast, with
Sidney Toler as Charlie Chan, Sen Yung as his son
Jimmy, Leo Carroll, Lionel Atwill, and Cora Witherspoon,
who is very funny.
Charlie seems to have a tough time with this one -- after
his friend from Scotland Yard is killed, he joins a cruise
from Honolulu to San Francisco to help find a suspected
murderer. There are no less than four more.
The murderer is obvious the second he's introduced
for reasons having nothing to do with the plot.
Inspector Duff has been on a case case undercover.
He's a passenger on a cruise ship going on a world tour
from New York. One of the passengers was strangled
the first night. Duff joined the cruise in Liverpool, and
he is sure the criminal is on board, and he's afraid that
he will strike again. You can say that again - he strangles
Duff right in the office while Charlie takes a call about
another of the passengers being murdered.
Jimmy shows up, naturally, and gets into all kinds of
trouble. Charlie puts up with it, Toler's Chan always
being on an even keel and exhibiting dry humor.
Very enjoyable. The young Chan, Willie, is played by
Layne Tom, Jr. Tom is on a 2006 interview about the
Chan films and became a very well known architect,
dying at age 87.
Good fun. - blanche-2

After being brought to justice by Charlie Chan and
convicted and sentenced for murder, the purp
breaks loose and heads for the wax museum!!
Turns out the proprietor of the wax museum
is also a plastic surgeon, and the con wants to
have his face changed so he can't be recognized
and get revenge on Chan!!
Then Charlie and a group go to the museum
to discuss a previous case in which an innocent
man was hanged!! This has people acting as
wax figures and a great mystery!!! A
A review from IMDb.com:
A convicted murderer is sentenced to die. As
they are taking him out, he easily escapes. He
then goes to a wax museum where a doctor
performs plastic surgery on criminals to change
their faces. Each week a radio broadcast on
famous crimes is done at the museum. Charlie
is the guest detective one evening. Meanwhile,
all sorts of intrigue is going on. To make matters
worse, Jimmy Chan finds a way into the museum.
One of the problems, however, is we have a
hard time keeping up with all the mistaken
identities. There are secret rooms, passageways,
wax figures and real figures. You name it. When
a person is murdered, it sets things off. Chan
was the intended victim but another man changed
places at a table. Lots of real fun. Oh, they have
scenes where the lights go out and things are
taken and people leave the room. I'm waiting
for a Charlie Chan movie where they don't
do that. Action is very quick here and it makes
the whole thing a lot of laughs. - Hitchcoc

Haven't quite figured out why the title(halfway through
the movie)! An intelligence man for the military, and an
old friend of Charlie's is murdered trying to find a
saboteur!! Chan is on the hunt, along with his #2
son! Many suspects!! A
A review from IMDb.com:
In watching the entire Charlie Chan canon, there
is one consistent issue. That is the trust that Charlie
puts in his own son. There are at least five goof ups
due to him; not to mention his constantly tampering
with evidence and shooting off his mouth. I realize
that these are part of the comic relief, but sometimes
they cross over into potential danger for other people.
Putting that little complaint aside, this was quite an
entertaining offering. It involves sabotage once again.
There is a test plane at the center of it and concern
that someone may try to put a wrench in the works.
The use of poison gas is front and center and the
identity of a man known for his terrorism. We have
the repeated business of a person in authority
wanting the spotlight, but Chan is ultimately in
control. I like this one. - Hitchcoc

A woman who's come up with a treasure map from
an ancestor has concocted a treasure hunt!! She's
divided the map into four parts, giving three of them
to anonymous people invited to the hunt and herself!!
Trouble starts up when the woman is killed and her
portion of the map is stolen!! Many suspects again!!
In this is the very famous George Reeves(TVs
Superman!!)! A
A review from IMDb.com:
"Number Two Son" Jimmy Chan (Victor Sen Yung)
sneaks aboard a ship about to embark on a treasure
hunt. Charlie Chan (Sidney Toler) comes looking
for him and finds a murder to investigate with a
boatload of suspects.
Exemplary entry in the Toler Chan series. Eerie,
moody atmosphere with some of the best cinematography
and direction of any of the Chan films. Lots of close-ups.
Nice cast includes George Reeves, Milton Parsons,
and pretty Kay Aldridge. Jimmy Chan is on screen
a lot in this one, so if you're not a fan be prepared.
I happen to like Jimmy and I didn't think his comic
relief here was too much, as some have said. Treasure
maps, pirates, talking parrots, and even a future
Superman -- what's not to love? - utgard14

A review from IMDb.com:
This was, sorry to say, the last Chan film made
by 20th Century Fox. It is also one of the most
fun and atmospheric. It is set in a castle in the
Mojave Desert owned by a descendant of the
Borgias, played by Douglass Dumbrille. This
is creepy and funny with Jimmy Chan (Sen
Yung)sneaking around the castle amid the
suits of armor. Henry Danielle is also on hand
as a guest of the house. A nutty fortune teller
also adds to the fun! Another one to watch
over and over. - admjtk1701

Charlie Chan goes to Rio to arrest a woman for
murder! She's a famous singer who's just about
to get married!! While on her way to a party to
celebrate her new engagement, she stops off
at a mystic who hypnotizes her and digs up
information about her past!! Later, she gets
killed, which sends Charlie into a frinzie to
find out who, why and how!!!
This also stars Victor Jory(Gone With The Wind,
The Shadow serial, Manhunt, his family has roots
in Salem!) as the mystic! A
A review from IMDb.com:
Not Exactly Carnival in Rio, but a really well
thought out Chan film. A very interesting and
familiar array of characters. One can almost
feel the breeze coming in off the S.Atlantic.
One of the better films for Jimmy Chan (Victor
Sen Yung). It's easy to watch over
again. - Steve Brown
