CHARLIE CHAN TOLER/WINTERS SET #2 MOVIE PAGE

CHARLIE CHAN TOLER/WINTERS SET #2

A collection of 3 Charlie Chan movies! The first
one is starring Sidney Toler, the last two are
starring Roland Winters!! These are on 2 discs,
with the Toler movie on the first and Winter's
two movies on the other disc!!

RED DRAGON, THE - TOLER(1945):

Mantan Morland(Birmingham Brown) is gone, and
in his place is his cousin, Chattanooga(Willie Best) who
does just fine here!! Also here is #3 son, Tommy(Benson
Fong) who again does his usual brow beaten son role!

As for the plot, this is suppose to be set in Mexico City!
People involved in an atomic bomb formula are being
killed off!! They're all killed by bullets, but no gun can be
found as the weapon!! There are several suspects, and
Charlie or another police officer is either with or nearby
the victim!!! Baffling!!

The story here itself is a good one, but the acting on the part
of the two main leads, Charlie and Lt. Carvero, is pretty stiff!
But even this slight drawback doesn't lessen the fun to be found
here!!

"Confucius could give answer to problem, but Confucius
not here!!" A

A review from IMDb.com:

Sidney Toler brings dignity to the role of Charlie
Chan, even in these poor-relation Monogram
entries. The script isn't great, but it's still good
to see Toler as Chan and some of Hollywood's
important character and supporting actors such
as George Meeker, Don Costello, and Charles
Trowbridge in supporting roles. Willie Best is
fine as Chattanooga Brown. - NativeTexan

FEATHERED SERPENT, THE - WINTERS(1948):

It's good to see Keye Luke back as Charlie's #1 son!!
Also back is Mantan Moreland as Birmingham Brown!
A group is in Mexico to find two men who have gone out
to find the ancient Aztec temple of the sun!! Charlie and
his #1 and #2 sons are in Mexico for a vacation, along with
Birmingham! While driving along to Mexico City, they happen
upon a man who's collapsed in a field along their route and
they pick him up and take him to the nearest town that just
happens to be where the group is!! And the man just happens
to be one of those that they're looking for!! He's delirious
and babbling about finding the temple, and he and his partner
being captured and tortured!! They all go out to try to solve
the mystery!

With all due respect for Mr. Winters, he is not as good as
Charlie Chan as the two previous actors(Olund and Toler)!!
But still, this is an interesting case for the master sleuth, and
a lot of fun watch! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

Yeah, it's bad but the fact that both Keye Luke
and Victor Sen Young appear as No. 1 and No.
2 Sons make it worthwhile. I like the outdoor
atmosphere and the wind howling at night. It's
like Charlie Chan goes camping. - Phantom Moonhead

SKY DRAGON, THE - WINTERS(1949):

Keye Luke and Mantan Moreland return with Roland Winters
in this film about Chan and his son being on a flight along with
several very suspicious dudes and dudettes!! Including one of
the stewardesses that recognizes a couple on the plane that
seem to have it in for her! To make matters worse, the pilot
and co-pilot have been killed or knocked out, along with
with everyone else on the plane!! All except Lee, who is able
to roust Charlie, and between the two, get everyone else
awake! They find out that the money shipment that was on
the plane has been stolen!! This appears to be the motive for
the murder and the drugging!! A good share of the movie takes
place on the plane!!

Everyone on the plane is suspect, except of course Charlie
and Lee!!

The other stewardess is played by Lois Lane herself, Noel
Neill!!! Also here is Milburn Stone(Gunsmoke)!! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

This film, along with The Shanghai Chest, is my
favorite of the Roland Winters films. Here, Charlie
is on board a late night flight home to San Francisco.
He awakens to find that everyone on the plane has
been drugged, $250,000 has disappeared, and a
detective hired to guard the money has been
murdered.

There are a couple of subplots that at first seem
to be distractions, but ultimately tie in to the
murder case. The cast is filled with familiar faces,
including Iris Adrian, Elena Verdugo, Lyle Talbot,
Milburn Stone, and John Eldredge. The skill of
these character actors adds immeasurably to the
film. There is a little less comedy in this one and
that is fine by me. And the presence of number
one son Lee (Keye Luke) is always welcomed.

There is no denying that these Monograms lack
the technical expertise of the earlier Fox films. But
if one accepts them for what they are, low budget
B mysteries, you will enjoy the 65 minutes. -nova-63
