CHARLIE CHAN TCM SET #1 MOVIE PAGE

CHARLIE CHAN TCM SET #1

A collection of 4 Charlie Chan movies! The first
three are starring Sidney Toler, the last one is
the first one starring Roland Winters!! These
are on 4 discs, but they're STACKED instead of
being on separate dividers!! Not my favorite
way of storing discs!!

DARK ALIBI - TOLER(1946):

Not sure what some of these reviewers at IMDb
were watching, I found this to be incredibly
enjoyable!! The basic story line is that Chan
has been retained by the daughter of a man
who's been framed for a bank robbery and
murder!! Much humor in this one!! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

Monogram Pictures had a hit-or-miss record with the
Chan series, but for fans of the characters and of
Sidney Toler, Mantan Moreland and Benson Fong,
"Dark Alibi" can make a rainy afternoon more enjoyable.
To see Benson Fong in his best role, also watch "Flower
Drum Song." - NativeTexan

Cast of Dark Alibi:

Sidney Toler ... Charlie Chan
Mantan Moreland ... Birmingham Brown
Ben Carter ... Benjamin Brown
Benson Fong ... Tommy Chan
Teala Loring ... June Harley
George Holmes ... Hugh Kenzie
Joyce Compton ... Emily Evans
John Eldredge ... Anthony R. Morgan
Russell Hicks ... Warden Cameron
Tim Ryan ... Foggy
Janet Shaw ... Miss Petrie
Edward Earle ... Thomas Harley
Ray Walker ... Danvers
Milton Parsons ... Johnson
Edna Holland ... Mrs. Foss

DANGEROUS MONEY - TOLER(1946):

Another good who-dun-it! In this one, Charlie
and his #1 son, along with their valet, are on a
ship bound for parts unimportant, when a man
approaches Charlie saying that he's almost been
killed, twice, and while on deck talking to Chan,
he's almost killed again!! Charlie tells him he
should be careful, and thinks that's the end of
the whole story! But while watching a show
together, low and behold, he's murdered!!

There are plenty of suspects, plenty of humor,
and plenty of more dead people!! A very
interesting and entertaining story and movie!! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

The best quality of "Dangerous Money" is Charlie
Chan's habit for metaphors and aphorisms, like
the one mentioned above, or "Kangaroos also reach
destination by leaps and bounds". The script is
often muddled, the multiple suspects, with few
exceptions, are not distinct enough as characters
(maybe because they are played by an almost
completely unknown cast), Sidney Toler is a bit
stodgy as Chan (he does well with the funny
lines, though), and Willie Best's comic relief
is a matter of taste, however I would advise
you to watch this film if only for one truly
memorable and outrageous surprise at the end.
You may well forget the rest of the picture a
day or two later, but I doubt you'll forget
that surprise anytime soon. Production
values are decent for a Monogram
film. ** out of 4. - gridoon2015

Cast of Dangerous Money:

Gloria Warren ... Rona Simmonds
Victor Sen Yung ... Jimmy Chan (as Victor Sen Young)
Rick Vallin ... Tao Erickson
Joseph Crehan ... Captain Black

Tristram Coffin ... Scott Pearson
Alan Douglas ... Mrs. Whipple
Selmer Jackson ... Ship's Doctor
Dudley Dickerson ... Big Ben

THE TRAP - TOLER(1946):

This has been panned by a lot of people!! They
say that Sidney Toler was lackluster in this and
lacked any real pizazz! Well, while this is partly
true, he did seem to slow down considerably in
this, the real problem here were a couple of the
girls, who were considerably irritating!!

Toler was very sick with cancer in this, and died
only a few months after this film!! That being
considered, I thought he did a great job, and
the movie, and mystery behind it, were quite
good!! Well worth watching!! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

Can we agree that Sidney Toler was ill at the
time of this movie, and stop talking about it.
This isn't' film class - you don't have to tell us
all you know about the back-story of the series.
Toler does a perfectly good job in this episode
of the series - Charlie Chan wasn't exactly
Shakespeare, and didn't require great acting.
Having several female characters in a Chan
mystery was rare, and it's a nice change to
me. The son role isn't overplayed in this movie,
and while it's not Mantan Moreland's best role,
he gives just enough comic relief to the film.
Based on the reviews here, you'd think that
a prize was being given for nastiest review.
Lighten up - the Chan series was meant as
light entertainment - not film school criticism
fodder. You get action, suspense, comedy,
and even a bit of romance all in an hour.
Over the years, I saw this 3-4 times before
I knew anything about the making of the
Chan films, and I always thought it was
every bit as good as most of the others
in the series. IF you can't just sit back
and enjoy this Chan, that's a YOU problem,
not a problem with the movie. - jonfrum2000

Cast of The Trap:

Sidney Toler ... Charlie Chan
Mantan Moreland ... Birmingham Brown
Victor Sen Yung ... Jimmy Chan (as Victor Sen Young)
Tanis Chandler ... Adelaide
Larry J. Blake ... Rick Daniels (as Larry Blake)
Kirk Alyn ... Seargent Reynolds
Rita Quigley ... Clementine
Anne Nagel ... Marcia
Helen Gerald ... Ruby
Howard Negley ... Cole King
Lois Austin ... Mrs. Thorn
Barbara Jean Wong ... San Toy
Minerva Urecal ... Mrs. Weebles
Margaret Brayton ... Madge Mudge
Bettie Best ... Winifred

CHINESE RING, THE - WINTERS(1947):

Not quite as entertaining as the other three
movies in this set, but still good!! This is the
first Charlie Chan starring Roland Winters, he
does ok, but not as good as Toler!! Still worth
a watch! B

A review from IMDb.com:

Winters' debut as Chan is okay, but film
is a near line-by-line remake of MR. WONG
IN CHINATOWN, and the story wasn't great
then. Foulger has meaty part as nervous
banker, Ahn looks inscrutable, Moreland
rolls his eyes, and Louise Currie is gorgeous,
but pedestrian direction and cheapo production
sink this for all but Chan fans. - Steve Brown

Cast Of The Chinese Ring:

Roland Winters ... Charlie Chan
Warren Douglas ... Police Sgt. Bill Davidson
Mantan Moreland ... Birmingham Brown
Louise Currie ... Peggy Cartwright
Victor Sen Yung ... Tommy Chan (as Victor Sen Young)
Philip Ahn ... Captain Kong
Byron Foulger ... Armstrong
Thayer Roberts ... Captain James J. Kelso
Barbara Jean Wong ... Princess Mei Ling (as Jean Wong)
Chabing ... Lillie Mae Wong
George Spaulding ... Dr. Hickey (as George L. Spaulding)
