CHRISTIE, AGATHA SET MOVIE PAGE

CHRISTIE, AGATHA SET

3 movies based on stories by Agatha Christie. Well worth
watching at least once, specially Death and Evil! An aside
here, just blow through the previews on these discs! They
are not in the least bit related at all to any of these movies!
They are all horror movie previews, and definitely not meant
for children or anyone with any sense of what a good movie
is!!!!(JMO)

DEATH ON THE NILE(1978):

This is a great movie with many great actors, not the least
of which is Peter Ustinov as the great detective Hercule Poirot!
Also here are several of my favorite actors, including David
Niven, Angela Lansbury, and Bette Davis! Great story, scenery,
music and acting!! A

A review from Amazon.com:

This is a good adaptation from the book. After watching "Evil
under the Sun" (1982) and "Appointment with Death" (1988)
you naturally think of Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot. The
whole movie is packed with great actors, yet even thought
you recognize them they do not distract from the characters
that they play.

I thought that it was a nice touch when the kids along the
shore mooned Mrs. Van Schuyler (Bette Davis) as kids would
do everywhere.

Simon (Simon MacCorkindale) and his new bride Linnet (Lois
Chiles) are being perused by Jacqueline De Bellefort (Mia
Farrow) the girl he jilted. Once onboard a boat going down
the Nile bodies are dropping like flies. Everyone is a suspect.
Everybody could have done it as we see the proof acted out.
And yet nobody could have done it as all alibis hold up. Only
Hercule Poirot can logically figure this out. Naturally as usual
Hercule Poirot is in the right place at the right time to hear
everything and extract the truth. -- bernie "xyzzy"

MIRROR CRACK'D, THE(1980):

I had to watch this a second time to put together what it was
about this movie that I thought made it weaker than the other
two in this set! It's because the main character of the movie,
Miss Marple, is treated as an extra throughout the movie!! You
only see Angela Lansbury a few times during the movie, and then
only as an aside it seems! My thinking here is that the other two
main characters demanded so much screen time that unfortunately
Angela's suffered greatly from it! I don't know this for sure, but
seems that way to me! And unfortunately Taylor and Novack just
didn't do a great job on this(IMO)! And Rock Hudson also just
seemed to get lost in this, having to play fourth/fifth fiddle
to the others! This coulda been such a better movie!! Hopefully
they'll re-make it some day! I'd give it a C+ just for the story
and the great Angela Lansbury!! C+

A review from Amazon.com:

This was the first Agatha Christie based film I saw as a child.
I've always remembered thinking what a great cast it had.
Elizabeth Taylor, Angela Lansbury, Rock Hudson, Tony Curtis
and Kim Novack!

Kim Novack stole this film for me. Not only was I bewitched
by her beauty...she had some of the most hilarious dialog and
a couple of her lines ('she's one of my oldest, OLDEST friends!'
& 'Where'd you get this wig, Woolworths?!') have remained in
my memory for 29 years- so that's saying something!

I love Elizabeth Taylor, but she's a little hammy in this film
(and that's not a weight reference). As a whole, it may not
rank up there with other Agatha Christie films, but it's totally
enjoyable due to it's plot, location & cast. At this point, it's
a great way to introduce younger people to old
Hollywood! --the buddhadharma "movie & TV junkie" - ronnrickett

Angela Lansbury ... Miss Jane Marple
Wendy Morgan ... Cherry
Margaret Courtenay ... Mrs. Bantry

Charles Lloyd Pack ... Vicar (as Charles Lloyd-Pack)
Richard Pearson ... Doctor Haydock
Thick Wilson ... The Mayor
Pat Nye ... Mayoress
Peter Woodthorpe ... Scout Master
Geraldine Chaplin ... Ella Zielinsky
Tony Curtis ... Martin N. Fenn
Edward Fox ... Inspector Craddock

EVIL UNDER THE SUN(1982):

While not quite as good as the first movie here, it is non-the-less
a fun movie to watch! Peter Ustinov returns again as Hercule
Poirot, and again does a smashing job of it! This also has Roddy
McDowell(Planet Of The Apes), James Mason(North By Northwest),
and Dianna Rigg, who is best know for her portrayal of Emma Peel
in the 60's The Avengers! Again a fun movie to watch! B+

A review from Amazon.com:

Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot is challenged to locate a missing
jewel. To do this he must go to a small island. Guess who has a
tendency to get seasick? He requests his fee in guineas (a guinea is
equivalent of 21 shillings.)

Naturally someone(s) is unexplainably dispatched. Of course the
island is loaded with the usual suspects. Everyone has a motive
and an alibi. By this time you have completely forgotten how the
movie started.

Speaking about the movie, they pulled out all the stops with
expensive locations, costumes, and actors. And Cole Porter
tossed in for ambiance. There was even an appearance of
Roddy McDowall who played Alan "Mollymauk" Musgrave in
"Lord Love A Duck" (1966) --bernie "xyzzy"

Cast of Evil Under The Sun:

Peter Ustinov ... Hercule Poirot
Jane Birkin ... Christine Redfern
Colin Blakely ... Sir Horace Blatt
Nicholas Clay ... Patrick Redfern
James Mason ... Odell Gardener
Roddy McDowall ... Rex Brewster
Sylvia Miles ... Myra Gardener
Denis Quilley ... Captain Kenneth Marshall
Diana Rigg ... Arlena Stuart Marshall
Maggie Smith ... Daphne Castle
Emily Hone ... Linda Marshall
John Alderson ... Police Sergeant
Paul Antrim ... Police Inspector
Cyril Conway ... Police Surgeon
Barbara Hicks ... Mr. Flewitt's Secretary
