CRYSTAL, BILLY SET

Three comedies by the great Billy Crystal! Great set!

FORGET PARIS(1995):

This is almost a great movie! The only problem I have
is Debra Winger as the female lead. She seemed really
boring to me! However, having John Spencer, Bill Walton,
Patrick Ewing, Sir Charles, KJ, David Robinson, Tim Hardaway,
Reggie Miller, Spud Webb, Marv Albert, Isiah Thomas and
the great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in this makes up for a lot!!
And the music and set locations are wonderful! B+

A review from Amazon.com:

Billy Crystal plays Mickey, a basketball referee who has
to accompany his estranged father's body to France,
where the old man requested to be buried with the other
members of his D-Day platoon. Unfortunately for Mickey,
the airline loses his body. Fortunately for Mickey, this
leads him to meet Ellen (Debra Winger), an airline executive
who takes personal charge of the case and even joins
him at the funeral. A whirlwind Paris romance leads to
marriage, but that's when the complications begin... The
story of Mickey and Ellen's marriage is recounted by their
friends (played by Joe Mantegna, Cynthia Stevenson, Julie
Kavner, Richard Masur, John Spencer, and Cathy Moriarty)
as they wait for Mickey and Ellen to arrive at a dinner
party. And of course these friends have their own stories,
which are played out in witty shorthand as they bicker
about who's going to tell the next part of the Mickey/Ellen
saga. Forget Paris is uneven (unsurprisingly, Winger is
stronger in the dramatic sections and Crystal in the comic
parts, a schism that takes its toll on their chemistry),
but its best parts hold up, even if the whole is shaky.
Plus, the movie's theme (that romantic memories aren't
what makes a marriage work, you have to live in the
present) is explored with conviction and
tenderness. --Bret Fetzer

FATHERS' DAY(1997):

Billy Crystal with Robin Williams!!! A can't miss hit comedy,
right! Well, almost! While this did have some funny, and
poignant moments, over all I thought this was a little slow!
It did have cool moments in Reno, but overall, just an ok
movie to me! Robin really steals the show in this one! B

A review from Amazon.com:

Billy Crystal plays the straight man to neurotic Robin
Williams when these two very different individuals join
forces to find a runaway teenager. Both, you see, have
been told they are the boy's father by Nastassja Kinski,
with whom each had once been involved. This Disney
production is based on the more humorous French farce,
Les Comperes, by Francis Veber (who cowrote this adaptation).
It has its moments as breezy entertainment, but the plot
is sloppy enough to seem more like slapstick than sophisticated
comedy. The gags are contrived, and it fails to unfold with
believability, or grace. More interesting than the writing
are the performances, as Crystal brings surprising depth
to his cynical lawyer and Williams is exceptionally fine-tuned
as a suicidal and dippy writer with a very kind
heart. --Rochelle O'Gorman

MY GIANT(1998):

If you go into this movie expecting a straight up
comedy, you will be sorely disappointed! This is
a very compassionate tale of a friendship that
developes out of greed! A very good movie! And
a very special dedication at the end to Andre
the Giant, whom this movie was basically a
tribute to!! A

A review from Amazon.com:

This Billy Crystal vehicle suffers from too much
sentimentality that competes with the outrageous
physical comedy, but still manages to be funny
enough to be worth a look. Crystal plays a shallow
sports agent on tour in Eastern Europe, smarting
from the separation from his wife and kid, when
he literally crashes into a discovery that might
resurrect his career. He finds a giant in a rural
town (NBA Basketball player Gheorghe Muresan)
and takes him back to America in the hopes of
exploiting his find, but soon discovers that loyalty
and being true to the things that are important
to him are what really matters. It's the physical
comedy and the contrast between the titanic
Muresan and the diminutive Crystal that sustains
the movie beyond its premise. Crystal's personality
and Muresan's genuine nature make My Giant rise
above its gimmicky nature. --Robert Lane
