ICON/THE HOLCROFT COVENANT DOUBLE FEATURE SET
THE HOLCROFT COVENANT(1985):
Actually not a bad film, though the transfer is
really terrible! It's one of those movies that you
have to pay attention to to really understand it!
Unfortunately there are no closed captionings to
help with the spots in the film that are hard to understand
what's being said. That being said, not a terrible movie,
just not one that I would watch over and over!(There
is some nudity) C+
From an Amazon.com customer:
The 1980s weren't too kind to John Frankenheimer,
but this film stands out as a top-notch spy thriller.
A Nazi pact to steal a fortune from the Third Reich
to aid Holocaust survivors results in a bizarre
inheritance 40 years later, with architect Michael
Caine having to come to terms with his father's past
and the terrifying prospects of a Fourth Reich. The
whole thing becomes a metaphor for a witches'
covenant. It's exciting and well-paced and full of
precious little moments (though Caine and Victoria
Tennant fall short of being interesting characters).
Supporting actors Mario Adorf, Michael Lonsdale,
and Bernard Hepton really shine. The film was
based on Robert Ludlum's bestseller and coscripted
by George Axelrod (The Manchurian Candidate).
Terrific audio commentary by the director provides
valuable insight--for instance, allowing Lonsdale
to carry a long exposition scene through his
commanding presence. --Bill Desowitz

This was a two part Hallmark presentation!!
Quite long, but really pretty Good! Patrick
Swayze is really starting to show that he is not
a well person but does great in his role! Worth
a watch every once in a while! B
From an Amazon.com customer:
First of all, yes the main baddie was a Russian,
but to bring him down required not only Patrick
Swayze's character, Monk, but also the woman
agent of the FSB and also Monk's Russian friend.
What's more, a Russian general is portrayed as a
hero to his country, both past (his refusal to
butcher Chechneyans) and in present (he orders
the troops not to fire on the demonstrators).
Also there were two morally ambiguous to
downright evil Americans involved in the plot
as well. As for Patrick Swayze being 50, get
over it - he handled his action scenes quite well.
All in all an enjoyable mini-series from
Hallmark/Forsythe.
