GRANT CARY TCM SET 1
Four classic movies starring the great Cary Grant!!
The only real complaint I have here is that these are
STACKED in a case, the worst of all packaging in my
opinion!!!
MY FAVORITE WIFE(1940):
ship and declared legally dead!! Cary gets remarried right
after the judge declares her dead!! Shortly thereafter, she
suddenly re-appears!!! Mayhem ensues!! This is not one of
Cary's best movies, but still better than most movies made
now-a-days!! B+
A review from IMDb.com:
The very best comedy-romances excel in all their ingredients.
The plot, screenplay, direction, settings, cinematography,
editing, cast and acting – all must be the very best to put
a film at the top of the genre. But one intangible aspect
sets a movie apart even further and raises it to the level
of great films. That is the chemistry between the lead players.
Both Cary Grant and Irene Dunne had wonderful chemistry
with a number of their co-stars. But I don't think either pairing
with any other performer had better chemistry than these
two together. In all three of their films, Grant and Dunne
worked perfectly off each other. The witty lines, humorous
situations and hilarious scenes in their comedies were so
spontaneous and flowed so smoothly that one felt they
were perfectly natural. Their chemistry was just as obvious
and beautiful in the drama- romance, "Penny Serenade,"
which was their last film together.
Their first film, "The Awful Truth," ranks among the very
top on all major comedy film lists. It's one of the best
screwball comedies of all time. This second film, "My
Favorite Wife," is wonderful fun and only misses the
elite group because of its somewhat lesser script. Still,
the chemistry makes this film a treat to watch and
enjoy. The supporting cast all excel as well. Granville
Bates is hilarious as the judge, and Donald MacBride
is a riot as the hotel clerk.
"My Favorite Wife" is sure to keep on entertaining
over the years. Here's a hilarious exchange to end
my review. Nick (Cary Grant), "Well, it's no use. I'm
out of gas." Ellen (Irene Dunne), "You seem to be
out of everything … except ideas." - SimonJack

HOME MOVIES(1940):
This is a jokingly made movie short about making home
movies(very bad home movies)!!! Really quite boring!!!!
A Review From IMDb.com;
We catch befuddled Robert Benchley fiddling with
some film. Obviously unprepared, he announces plans
to share information on "the art of making motion
pictures in your own home." Of course, we know this
as home movies. Then, Mr. Benchley recollects showing
his "Home Movies" from a summer family trip, to a
group of uninterested adults. There are problems
with focus, camera-work, and other typical amateurish
mishaps. Benchley tries to blame them on faulty
manufacturing. He is more amused than either of
his audiences. It ends with a warning to observe the
"No Smoking" sign.

NIGHT AND DAY(1946)
geniuses of our time, Cole Porter(Musicals: Can Can, Kiss
Me Kate, High Society, Anything Goes, Silk Stockings, Songs:
Begin The Beguine, Night And Day, I've Got You Under My
Skin, and even Roy Rogers' hit song, Don't Fence Me In)!!
This is one of the very few musicals that Cary was in!! Be
forwarned, this is pretty long!!! A
A review from an IMDb.com customer:
Good musical that could have been even better if it had
better editing.Starts slow and then builds momentum.
The directing style was inconsistent where in there are
scenes that are top quality and then there are scenes
that are just done in a rushed and sloppy way which is
weird because those bungled scenes are those that are
easily done.Despite these faults, the MUSIC here to any
big music fan will certainly encourage you to forgive
and enjoy.Grant is very stiff here but this is due to his
capturing Porter's mannerisms. The biography is toned
down/adjusted to Porter's version for the mainstream
audience,so if one really wishes to dig into his real life
which is very x-rated stuff, read his bio books instead.
The production of this film coupled with it's great
music will be great for one who wants uncontroversial
musical entertertainment.I love the 1940's color
technique here too.Only for early 2oth century POP
music fans and big fans of the lead actors...... - kenandraf

MUSICAL MOVIELAND:
Another short, this one showcases different music for
different types of movies/shows! B
From IMDb.com
This is a cobbled-together musical short subject, derived
from several old shorts, and held together by a nominal
tour group wandering around the Warner Brothers lot.
It works all right in an odd way, including the three-strip
Technicolor 'Indian Dance' shot with Busby Berkley
interludes -- the silly costumes are meant to show
off the brightness of the process since these shorts
date from the period when Technicolor was still more
of a curiosity than part of the vocabulary of the movies.
The most interesting part, for this old fan of the 'spot
the star' game is to be able to finally put a face to Bess,
Flowers, 'The Queen of the Extras'. She's a member of
the group being shown around the lot and you can
spot Bess by the grey pillbox hat she wears.- boblipton

A review from the IMDb:
This is pure, innocent fun. If you're not too jaded by
modern life, this film will tickle you. Cary Grant is in
fine comic form, as are the rest of the cast.
The thing that really got me, the first time I saw this
film, was how gorgeous Shirley Temple was as a
young woman. I was only used to seeing her as a
little girl in her early movies, but wow, she grew up
quite well. Very easy on the eyes. I felt the same
way about her when I saw Fort Apache. Fact is, if
I was 17 in 1947, they'd have to use fire hoses to
keep me away from her. Oh, that little button nose....
The cast comes together well and keeps your
interest all the way through. One of those early
comedies that doesn't require harsh language,
nudity, or gross-out jokes to get its laughs.
This is a movie that I can always enjoy every time
it shows up on TV. Great performances by all.

A review from IMDb:
I recommend this to all my remodel/addition or first time
custom homeowners. I'd puts things in perspective and
they'll have a slightly humorous reminder when things
aren't going as predicted. A classic, slightly screwball
comedy of the pitfalls and problems associated with
home ownership. Oddly enough I didn't learn until
recently that this is a remake of the Jack Benny comedy
"George Washington Slept Here", also good but more
low key. Not to bore you but IMDb wants more lines.
So here's a line. Here's a little longer line. Here's a
line especially for you, and here's what I hope is the
last of these required lines. Don't they know sometimes
less is better? --The New York Times
