KARLOFF, BORIS SET, THE
A five pack of films by the master of suspense/horror,
Boris Karloff! Hard to believe but these movies all
have closed captioning!! But there are no specials
at all!
NIGHT KEY(1937):
Fairly close to a comedy really! Karloff plays
an inventor who has been dissed by a former
partner for the second time! He goes on a
crusade to ruin said shister! Problems arise
when he partners up with a second rate theif
and he double crosses him! A
A review from IMDb.com:
Typecast as "Boris Karloff" the monster, William
Henry Pratt (his real name) was cast almost
exclusively as monsters and mad scientists. He
shows glimmers of real humanity in most of
these roles, but rarely got to play a hero.
Here is the exception. A kindly old scientist
steps over the line only slightly in order to
compel a ruthless businessman who has twice
cheated him to do the right thing. In the end,
he proves himself loyal, kind, honest, and
courageous, in spite of being elderly and
nearly blind.
A movie like this (though definitely a "B" movie)
demonstrates that this did not have to be the
case. Karloff/Pratt could easily have played
many a kindly grandfather or filled many other
likable roles. What a pity he so rarely got
the chance! - pryor-notice

I found this quite boring! It's more of a historical
movie than anything else! Even with the great actors
Boris Karloff, Basil Rathbone & Vincent Price, this
is just not very engrosing! Just boring! C
A review from IMDb.com:
Tower of London is as sinister as Basil Rathbone,
Boris Karloff and the rest of Universal's horror
department can make it. Although the picture is
not without its weaknesses, lack of thrills is
not one of them. Neither is the casting--Rathbone
and Karloff are savage enough to please the most
bloodthirsty. Karloff enjoys his role as executioner
and spends plenty of time in his torture chamber. - whpratt1

Opera! Why'd it have to be opera!! I am
NOT a fan of opera! Especially high, ear
piercing sopprano!! It is unfortunate for
me that this was based around opera, as the
story had merit and Karloff does a great
job here! I just hate opera!! C+
A review from the back of the DVD:
THE CLIMAX stars the one and only Boris
Karloff as the quietly unhinged Dr.
Friedrich Hohner, who has already disposed
of his wife. When a young opera star
(Susanna Foster) catches his ear and eye,
Hohner sets out to have her under his
control. Karloff is a master of playing
this type of low-key, seemingly docile
character, who has something boiling
just beneath the surface. Lovers of
opera should enjoy this movie, since
it's packed w/ big musical productions.
In fact, it's damned near a
musical!... - azathothpwiggins

This is not Kaloff's movie! It instead belongs
Charles Laughton! This, unlike the last two
movies, is very good! Laughton does a great
job here, along with the many supporting
actors! And of course there's Boris! A very
decent movie! B+
A review from the back of the DVD:
Vastly underrated, at least compared to the
IMDb rating (5.9). I mean, come on, a movie
starring Charles Laughton and Boris Karloff?
That alone makes it pretty awesome. And even
aside from them, the movie's just darn good.
It's a Gothic horror about a French nobleman
(Laughton) who captures a rogue (Richard Wyler)
and tries to force him to marry his niece
(Sally Forrest) to spite her father (Paul
Cavanagh), whom Laughton has imprisoned in
his dungeon for the past 20 years. Karloff
plays Cavanagh's guard. The only real problem,
besides its having an utterly forgettable
title, is the hero, Wyler, who is not that
good an actor. Fortunately, it's the kind
of film where all eyes are on the awesome
supporting cast, so it's easy to forget about
him. Joseph Pevney is probably best known
for directing 14 Star Trek episodes,
including "The Trouble with Tribbles". - zetes
Charles Laughton ... Sire Alain de Maletroit
Boris Karloff ... Voltan
Sally Forrest ... Blanche de Maletroit
Richard Wyler ... Denis de Beaulieu (as Richard Stapley)
William Cottrell ... Corbeau
Alan Napier ... Count Grassin
Morgan Farley ... Renville
Paul Cavanagh ... Edmond de Maletroit
Michael Pate ... Talon
Another great movie, though, again, Boris
is not a main character! The story is a
little tale about a man looking for two
of his collegues that have disappeared
and the castle they ended up at! A-
A review from the back of the DVD:
Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney Jr., together
again in a Universal programmer, hooking in
the matinee audiences & the modern day viewer
like me. Of course, both roles by the legends
are rather small compared to the real principles,
Richard Greene, Paula Corday and Stephen McNally.
But--given that the 3 main characters are
fleshed out well & the lead couple is very
likable, I found myself engaged throughout.
"The Black Castle" is a good film with much
to offer, even if someone was just watching
for the presence of the venerable horror
stars.... - simeon_flake
