THE INVISIBLE MAN LEGACY SET
The complete collection of the classic Invisible Man
Movies! These are somewhat restored, and considering
the age, they are in great shape, both in sound quality
and video! And as with all the other Legacy sets, there
is closed captioning!! Also with several great extra
features! And the packaging of the set is excellant!
THE INVISIBLE MAN(1933)
Studios! This one is not at all like I remembered it!
It begins with Claude Rains already invisible, and
not a nice guy at all!!!! He at first is looking for a
remedy to his affliction, but then goes berserk!
Great special effects, especially considering the
year! A good supporting cast, and wonderful "mood"
music! A
A review from IMDb.com:
Oh! What a wonderful film! The Invisible Man is
fraught with witty dialogue, excellent character
acting, inventive and creative special effects,
insightful direction, and solid, tight scripting. The
story is about a scientist that develops a serum
which turns himself invisible, for good intent
initially. The serum has negative side effects,
one of which is turning the scientist into a raving,
mad megalomaniac bent on conquering mankind
and the world. What is most surprising about
the film is its rather perverse sense of black
humour(a James Whale specialty) and its cruelty.
The Invisible Man is not a benign horror monster
but rather a frightening, destructive force capable
of acts of violence, madness, and viciousness.
The direction is the real star of the film as Whale
combines script, acting, mood, and setting amidst
the background of ground-breaking special effects
that are still impressive to this day. Whale laces
his special humour throughout, and this film has
no shortage of dark comedic moments. The acting
all around is very good with people like Henry
Travers, Gloria Stuart, Una O'Connor and William
Harrigan especially as a jealous doctor giving all
the support they can to a formless Claude Rains.
Rains's voice is magnificent and one senses he was
made to play the part that would make him famous.
Look for Dwight Frye in a small role. A wonderful
film experience! - BaronBl00d

A review from IMDb.com:
In general, it seems that sequels seldom live up
to the originals. There are just too many examples
I can think of when this was the case. In addition,
sequels that take an entirely different approach
to the original subject matter often are abysmal
failures as well (such as the wonderful VILLAGE OF
THE DAMNED and it's incredibly awful and saccharine
CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED). In light of this, I was
very pleasantly surprised to this see that this film,
while quite different from the fantastic original,
is still an exceptional film.
Much of the reason for the film being so good
was that the film was made by Universal Studios
during a very productive period for their horror
films. They just knew how to put the whole package
together to make a dandy film. Additionally, the
cast really helped as well, as Vincent Price (mostly
just his voice, as he IS invisible through almost
all the film), Cedric Hartwicke, Cecil Kellaway
and many others worked together to quite nicely.
The writing, also, is a big standout, as the film
COULD have easily been just another "hack" sequel.
Using bits of humor here and there throughout
the film and providing a great ending really
made this film worth while. - planktonrules

For this third installment in the Invisible Man series,
Universal decided to do a comedy with a little twist.
This time the invisible man is a women! Otherwise
this film had no relation to the previous two. Not
a horror but a rather lightweight, amusing little film.
John Barrymore plays a simple minded professor
who has just created an 'invisible machine'. Rich
playboy Richard Russell is financing the professor's
'research' so the professor has to convince him
that he can actually make people invisible. Of
course he thinks he is crazy! All the professor
needs is a human volunteer so he puts an add in
the paper. Lovely model 'kitty',played by Virginia
Bruce, wants to teach her mean boss, Mr Growley,
a little lesion so she answers the add. Things get a
ittle more complicated when a group of thugs
hiding out in Mexico see the add. Blackie, the
leader, sends his nitwit sidekicks to try to get
the machine. I enjoyed this film and got quite
a few laughs watching it. It is available on the
Universal Legacy Series Invisible Man film
set. - dav07dan02

Not really a horror movie, more of an espionage
A review from an IMDb.com customer:
Of the "Invisible Man" series made by Universal,
I was only familiar with the first two (both of
which I'll rewatch again presently) - the James
Whale original being one of my all-time favorites.
Ever since it was released as part of the "Legacy"
set, I had mostly read negative opinions about
this film - and even Leonard Maltin gives it a
pretty low rating. However, I was very surprised
by how much I enjoyed it! True, the leads are
rather bland (why on earth is Ilona Massey credited
before Jon Hall?!) but, then, INVISIBLE AGENT has
a formidable trio of villains - Peter Lorre, Sir Cedric
Hardwicke and J. Edward Bromberg - going for it
(who even make Curt Siodmak's script sound better
than it is). Besides, I must say that I'm a sucker
for both WWII and espionage movies, so that's a
big plus as well...which, I guess, means that it
isn't really a horror film and that The Invisible
Man is the hero! Oh well, you can't have everything!
John P. Fulton's still-impressive special effects
(exposed a bit here by the extra clarity of the
DVD transfer) deliver the goods and, all in all,
the film made me keen to get to the remaining
titles in the series. - MARIO GAUCI

A review from an IMDb.com customer:
Directed and produced by Ford Beebe, this invisible
man installment is quite interesting. Robert Griffin
(Jon Hall) returns from the "left for dead" only to
find out his business partners have cheated him out
of a fortune. Griffin practically stumbles into the
helping hands of Dr. Drury(John Carradine), who
experiments with a new formula that makes animals
invisible. Griffin feels if he himself was invisible he
could better seek his revenge on his double crossers.
After becoming invisible, the weird doctor is in no
hurry to return Griffin to normal.
I have always liked Hall even though he is not an
overly exciting actor. Along with Carradine there
is a very able supporting cast that includes: Lester
Matthews, Leyland Hodgson, Evelyn Ankers and Leon
Errol. Very creative for a small budget film. Well
worth watching. - Michael O'Keefe

Leon Errol ... Herbert
John Carradine ... Doctor Drury

Halliwell Hobbes ... Cleghorn
Leyland Hodgson ... Sir Frederick Travers
Doris Lloyd ... Maud
Ian Wolfe ... Feeney
Billy Bevan ... Sergeant
