THE MUMMY LEGACY SET
The complete collection of the classic Mummy Movies!
Again, as with all of the "legacy" monster movies, these
have been restored so that the picture quality is as good
as it gets for movies of this age, and the sound is excellent!
This, too, has closed captioning, and the packaging and
extras in it are wonderful!!
THE MUMMY(1932)
"monster" movies, Dracula and Frankenstein! Not sure
why, can't really put my finger on anything in particular.
The "mummy" is only shown for about 3 minutes! It's
too bad too, because with Boris Karloff as the mummy,
I think this could have been much better!! That being
said, this is still a good movie, just not really a "horror"
movie! More of a suspense-love story! B
A review from IMDb.com:
With one of Boris Karloff's numerous acting successes
and a production done the way that a horror feature
should be made, this is a well-crafted classic of the
genre. From the first scene, the right atmosphere is
established, and the story is told at an implacable
pace that slowly builds up the tension and possibilities.
As he does with his characters in so many of his
horror features, Karloff makes "The Mummy" a
menacing monster, yet one with enough human
motivations to keep him from becoming cartoonish.
Karloff's approach, as does the movie as a whole,
stimulates the imagination rather than the senses,
giving this classic version a depth and permanence
that cannot be matched by those more recent
adaptations that rely on boring "special" effects
and contrived "action" sequences instead of a
well-told story with solid characters.
Edward Van Sloan, David Manners, and the rest
of the supporting cast also help out. The
atmosphere and settings are kept relatively
simple, but effective. Naturally, the story is
far-fetched, but it has a consistency that makes
it relatively easy to suspend disbelief. The picture
fits together well, and it remains a solid entry in
the list of classic horror films. - Snow Leopard

A review from IMDb.com:
This movie marked the beginning of a new series
of Mummy films from Universal Studios--seven years
after the original Boris Karloff classic, THE MUMMY.
This was the one mummy film starring Tom Tyler as the
monster, but it is a really good film--so good that it
inspired three followup films.
The real star of the film isn't Dick Foran or his pal,
Wallace Ford,...nor is it Tom Tyler. No, the guy
who really steals the show is the ever-campy
George Zucco. In traditional films I don't know if
Zucco would have succeeded, but in B-horror flicks,
he was great--with his cool accent and crazy eyes.
It seems that madman Zucco (that's not much of a
stretch) is leader of a weird cult and he is trying to
revive the mummy, Karhis, using the dreaded Tanna
Leaves! Can he be stopped in time or will this horror
be unleashed on the infidels?! Tune in and see.
I love this film not because it is great art but because
it is great entertainment and is a great example of
the Saturday morning B-horror films of yesterday.
Kids and adults loved them despite their predictability-
-because they were just plain escapist fun! This movie
has it all! - a customer

A review from an IMDb.com customer:
Okay, so this is pretty familiar stuff once again--you
know, mad Egyptian cult leader and his resurrection
of a mummy to exact revenge on those who have
desecrated ancient tombs. About the only big
differences here are having Lon Chaney, Jr. play
the mummy for the first time and the action is
moved to America (despite this making little sense).
While this is far from the best mummy film, it is
good old fashioned fun and I enjoy this much more
than the overly special effects enhanced mummy
films of the last decade because of the fun factor.
The campiness and the whole ambiance are just
so wonderful--and they remind you that the term
"B-movie" isn't such a bad thing. Watch it and let
yourself go--and have FUN! - planktonrules

A review from an IMDb.com customer:
This movie will scare the pants off of children.
I grew up in the 50's. Our house was on a semi-rural
road overshadowed on one side by a thick forest.
At the foot of the tall hill upon which stood our house
there was a swamp. The nearest neighbor was a
quarter mile away. To an adult eye, the evening
view on a moonlit night was, I am sure, romantic.
To a child, however, the scene was an empty
vessel ready to be filled with imaginary images
of fearsome things.
One weekend night, my parents left me in charge
of my two younger brothers. I put them to bed
and sat down to see what could possibly be on
TV. An hour or so later, I lay in bed, in the moonlight,
in a pool of sweat, thinking about tana leaves
and the possibility, however remote, that a
pot of them might have been mistakenly left
simmering on the stove. In my imagination, I
knew he was out there coming for me. It
didn't matter if he was miles away or just down
the road. He knew who I was; he had taken a
special interest in me. Up the moonlit road, step
by step, limping along, relentless, unstoppable.
Somehow I made it through the night but that
mummy stayed with me for years and inspired
many a nightmare.
My point here is that horror films are designed
to scare you. We pay money to get scared. This
one will do the trick if you're 10 years old and
you're all alone (or almost alone -- when you're
surrounded by mummies, you really do need an
adult). Nine stars. - Steve Prescott

A review from an IMDb.com customer:
There is still life in this curse, barely. The premise
has ran its course. Too many familiar scenes and
the thrill is just hanging on. This although is still
creepy to watch and fun for a rainy night. The
living mummy Kharis(Lon Chaney Jr)now seeks his
lost love(Virginia Christine) in the bayous of Louisiana.
Also notable are Kurt Katch and Jackie Lou Harding.
