THE WOLF MAN LEGACY SET PAGE

THE WOLF MAN LEGACY SET

The complete collection of the classic Mummy Movies!
With the picture and sound being restored pretty decent,
this also has closed captioning! The packaging and the
extras are great!

WAREWOLF OF LONDON(1935):

No Lon Chaney, no Vincent Price, no Bela Lagosi, no
Boris Karolff! What a great movie in spite of all this!!
Much more of the ambience of the time period, this
was the groundbreaker for the series to be! A

A review from an IMDb.com customer:

Universal's first 'werewolf' movie & oddly enough one
of the least celebrated in the studio's library of classic
horror films, due in large part to a later vehicle titled
'THE WOLF MAN' that would elevate the werewolf to
classic monster status. Not that there's anything wrong
with "Werewolf of London", it's a terrific picture in its
own right.

Perhaps the star of this film could be the reason why
this picture didn't catch on like the later wolf series
with Lon Chaney. Henry Hull (as Wilfred Glendon) doesn't
come across as being the most likable guy in the world,
or one who can invoke much sympathy like Larry Talbot.
Hull is such a cold fish that it doesn't come as a great
shock when his jailbait looking wife (Valerie Hobson)
runs into the arms of her former beau. But, whatever
charm Hull may lack, Warner Oland makes up for in
spades with his show-stealing performance as Dr.
Yogami. "The werewolf is neither man nor wolf,
but a Satanic creature with the worst qualities
of both."

This movie also tips its hat to the horror films of James
Whale, injecting liberal amounts of comic relief
throughout the proceedings, with the biggest laughs
coming courtesy of two old lushes, Mrs. Whack &
Mrs. Moncaster, who rent a room to the afflicted
Dr. Glendon and after getting a peek of him in his
lunar form, vow to give up the bottle, but somehow
I don't think they stuck to that resolution.

Henry Hull and his London Werewolf may linger
forever in Chaney's shadow, but Hull will forever
have the advantage when it comes to "best dressed"
lycanthrope & no one can ever take that from
him. - simeon_flake

THE WOLF MAN(1941)

This is truly a great movie!! A good man gets involved
in a terrible set of circumstances that eventually ends
poorly for all involved! You feel very sympathetic for
Larry, and saddened at the ending you just know is
coming! A+

A review from IMDb.com:

Lon Chaney portrays psychological torment, guilt,
and conflict so well in this film. These feelings are
so absent in this century. Larry Talbot, in contrast
to public officials and corporate executives, wants
to do the right thing, and feels remorse at the
suffering that he has caused. Chaney also does this
in his later Inner Sanctum films. Maria Ouspenskaya
is also great as Maleva, the gypsy. And the music
is also marvelous. Films as these put contemporary
horror films to shame. The former are fun and a
pleasure to watch. This one is quite good. - herbertweiner

FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN(1943):

Two of the greats of old time horror come together
to actually try to help each other out of their individual
perils! Great actors, great story, great ambience! A good
follow up to the legacies of both Wolf Man and Frankenstein! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

The wolfman's desperation at again finding himself the
terror of the full moon (after four years of peaceful
sleep) prompts him to seek help from Dr. Frankenstein
thus giving us the vision of the two screen monsters
together at last. In fact they seem the best of friends,
the wolfman gently protecting the forlorn monster from
public attack - yes, the village mob is at it again! However,
the young doctor soon puts an end to all that by recharging
the monster's energy so we have a ring-side seat at the
heavyweight fight. The various roars and expressions of
the two are excellent as the stiff armed monster (the
sweetly smiling Bela Lugosi) and agile wolf man (the
great Lon Chaney with more imaginative hairiness in
comparison to his first wolfish screen appearance)
growl for territory. Great stuff from beginning to the
sudden somewhat abrupt end - did they run out of
ideas or money I wonder! - foordie

SHE-WOLF OF LONDON(1946):

As all the reviewers are want to say in their
reviews, this is not a warewolf story!! It is
however a good mystery story! With the great
June Lockheart as the lead, this is a good movie! B+

A review from an IMDb.com customer:

Despite its title, She-Wolf of London contains
no werewolves, but I still enjoyed this movie.
It is more of a mystery than a horror.

A series of murders take place, all at night,
around London. The nature of these murders
suggest they have been committed by a werewolf.
A young woman thinks she is responsible as her
family has connections with werewolves and
thinks she is one herself. But she certainly
isn't the murderer as she nearly becomes a
victim herself...

The movie is nicely shot in black and white
and some of the foggy night scenes are very
atmospheric.

The cast includes a young June Lockhart (who
went on to play Maureen Robinson in Lost In
Space), Don Porter and Sara Haden.

Watching She-Wolf of London is an ideal way
to spend an hour one dark evening.

Rating: 3 stars out of 5. - Chris Gaskin
