MATT HELM - DEAN MARTING SET

THE SILENCERS

The first of the Dean Martin/Matt Helm movies!

Dean Martin stars in these stand ups of the James Bond
movies!

THE SILENCERS(1966):

This first movie is quite good, with a lot of music
and slapstick! Course, what would you expect from a
Dean Martin movie! This is very similar to the James
Cobern Flint movies! I think I actually enjoy this a
little more! Starring here with Dino is Victor Buono
(Batman series as King Tut), Stella Stevens(Playboy
model, Santa Barbara), Cyd Charisse(Singing In The
Rain, The Band Wagon) & Roger C. Carmel(Star Trek:
TOS as Harry Mudd)!! A

A review from an IMDb.com customer:

I'm a Dean Martin fan so I may be biased but I
really enjoyed this goofy spy parody. Martin
parodies not only the Bond genre but also his
own character as a super suave playboy. However,
I would have to say that the real mastery of this
kind of spoof would still be found in the "Our Man
Flint" movies with James Coburn. There wit is a
bit sharper and their humor is over-the-top without
being quite so goofy. - freakus

MURDERER'S ROW(1966)

A scientist who has created a laser weapon has been
kidnapped and it's up to Matt to rescue him, get the
laser and defeat the meany!!!

One of the highlights of this movie is when Dean goes
to a discotheque and meets his real son who is playing
in the group that's there: Dino(Dean's son), Desi(Desi
and Lucy's son) and Billy!!

Also starring here are Karl Malden(Streets Of San
Francisco) and Ann-Margret(Grumpy Old Men, Grumpier
Old Men, Viva Las Vegas)! And returning for their
second round are James Gregory and Beverly Adams! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

Some people just don't get the Matt Helm movies.
They are enjoyable over the top spoofs of the spy
genre and would have been as effective if the actors
were replaced with Gerry Anderson puppets. Nobody
was out for Oscar recognition here, just 100 minutes
of enjoyably daft entertainment. Murderers Row
seems to be about 50% second unit shooting (with
doubles) but is still more enjoyable then any recent
Bond film. No gritty realism or stupid back stories
here. It could have been improved if the score had
been better, too many scenes, especially the car
chase, are under scored and the movie does sag
a bit in the middle, but overall it is undemanding
entertainment if you are in the right mood. - Alan Baker

Cast of Murderer's Row:

Dean Martin ... Matt Helm
Ann-Margret ... Suzie
Karl Malden ... Julian Wall

Corinne Cole ... Miss January
Robert Terry ... Dr. Rogas
Dean Paul Martin ... Himself (as Dino, Desi & Billy)
Desi Arnaz Jr. ... Himself (as Dino, Desi & Billy)

THE AMBUSHERS(1967):

A good spy movie, but a little too straight-laced
for me! Especially since it's Dean Martin!!

Returning for their last ride as compatriots with
Dean are James Gregory & Beverly Adams! B

A review from IMDb.com:

The Matt Helm series of movies featuring Dean
Martin are based upon the novels of the same
character (loosely), but they are all parody movies.
Similar to how "Naked Gun" spoofed many popular
themes at the time, these films all poke fun at
the spy movies by featuring the outrageousness
of the films right in your face. Bond drinks martinis,
Helm drinks - a lot. Bond beds a girl or two, Helm
beds them all. Bond has fancy gadgets, Helm has
them plus his home has them too. Bond has villains
with sinister purpose (and sometimes a quirk or
two), Helm has villains that are sometimes freaks
or simply idiotic. These movies are blatantly
obvious as spoofs and their value is that they
are interesting to watch at least once or
twice. - A Customer

Tomiko Ishizuka ... Slaygirl (as Yumiko Ishizuka)

Ulla Lindstrom ... Slaygirl
Marilyn Tindall ... Slaygirl

THE WRECKING CREW(1968):

A train carrying gold has been robbed and Matt
has to recover it and put the perp behind bars!!

This one is a little better than the last one, but
still a little too serious for me!!

Starring here with Dean are Tina Louise(Gilligan's
Island), Elke Sommer(A Shot In The Dark), Sharon
Tate(The ill-fated actress targeted by the Manson
cult) & Nacny Kwan(The World Of Suzie Wong)! B+

A review from an IMDb.com customer:

As I watched this movie I couldn't help smiling.
The movie is essentially a spoof of James Bond
flicks with super-guy fighting well-equipped
villain. Seductive women and ridiculous gadgets
are abundant. Some are as cute as they come
(I am talking about women here). All are fallible
(women). All women fall for our super-guy. He
seemed to be bemused by this (who wouldn't).
While he conquers one woman after another,
he also manages to rescue a few tons of gold
from the grip of the above mentioned villain
(the later is usually considered to be the main
plot - what a preposterous notion). One has to
love the irreverent soundtrack. They don't make
movies like this anymore. Pity. 9/10. - oleh_k
