MR. MOTO SET:

The 8 movies from the Mr. Moto series of movies! The
first 7 all feature Peter Lorre(I know, I know, he's
not Japanese!! Live with it!!)!! The last starred
Henry Sliva(an over 6 foot caucasion!)!

The transfers here are excellent, with good picture
and sound!!

THINK FAST MR. MOTO(1937):
(See sets: Mr. Moto Set)

In this first Mr. Moto he is in the middle of
a smuggling ring and tries to solve who is the
main man! Peter Lorre is great in this, and the
movie is much fun! A

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

Peter Lorre shines from the outset as Mr. Moto,
the Japanese trader in artifacts and hobby detective.
Here he helps a young man and woman. He is the son
of a rich shipping tycoon and she is a mysterious
woman who is helping some smugglers. Moto makes
their acquaintance on board an ocean liner, the
Marco Polo, headed for Shanghai. He must deal
with spies on board and reveals himself to be
quite proficient in killing when necessary. The
show begins with one of the best scenes as he
transforms himself from a street peddler to his
real identity during the Chinese New Year
celebration in San Francisco. He is adept at
martial arts and knowledge of using the strengths
of others against themselves. Like so many
mysteries of the time, we are given numerous
suspects. There's no question who the basic
bad guys are, but we know that there are some
surprises. Moto is so cool as he wanders in
his white coat, always drawing attention. - Hitchcoc

THANK YOU, MR. MOTO(1937):
(See sets: Mr. Moto Set)

Peter returns as the detective/treasure hunter
this time in Shanghai where he is embroiled in
mystery about several scrolls that are said to
be the key to a treasure that involves Genghis
Khan! This is very good and even has the great
John Carradine in it!! A

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

Exemplary Mr Moto entry is the darkest in the series
and boasts a compelling emotional undertow that's as
effective as it is unexpected. For once, the lame comic
relief is expunged (studio execs, no doubt, forced its
quick return) which allows Peter Lorre's wonderful
characterization an extra bit of space to work in
while following the procedural detective tropes and
handling Moto's apt witticisms. (That's Lorre's stunt
double handling the physical stuff.) The basic story
involving some antique Chinese scrolls that make up
a sort of treasure map was (atypically) based on a
novel by Moto creator John P. Marquand and this may
add to the tough, blunt tone hiding just below the
surface. All the Moto films entertain, but this one
sticks with you. - maksquibs

MR. MOTO'S GAMBLE(1938):
(See sets: Mr. Moto Set)

Keye Luke reprises his role as Lee Chan, #1 son of
Charlie!! Sadly, this is about boxing, and I am not
a fan of boxing at all! But I am a fan of both Peter
Lorre and Keye Luke! With Perry White(John Hamilton
of Superman fame) himself making an appearance, you'd
think this would be a no doubt hit! While it was good,
it wasn't up to the first two movies to me! B

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

Big problems here. As others have pointed out, this
film started out as a Charlie Chan film, but he proved
unavailable, so the studio rewrote it as a Mr. Moto
caper; it even has Chan's "No. 1 Son" in a supporting
role. Watching the picture, it's very easy to imagine
Charlie Chan doing and saying everything that Mr. Moto
says. This film lacks the martial arts and international
intrigue of the better Mr. Moto titles, thus it is not
a Mr. Moto film. If you are looking for a real Mr.
Moto film, get a different movie. This one is a Charlie
Chan movie, starring Mr. Moto. Most unfortunate.
Charlie Chan is Charlie Chan and Mr. Moto is Mr.
Moto; this film blurs the distinctions and should
be shunned by all lovers of either detective. - pfrank-4

MR. MOTO TAKES A CHANCE(1938):
(AKA: LOOK OUT MR. MOTO)
(See sets: Mr. Moto Set)

While all the Mr. Moto films rely on a certain
amount of comedy, this one goes way overboard!
The two "newsmen" are quite boring! Of course
Lorre is as great as always! And the story has
merit on its own, if they'd just left out the
"comedy" in this!! An ok flick, but not near
as good as the first two! B

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

A watchable Moto entry, though it takes a little
time to get going, but once it does you're engaged.
The final is especially a cracker. - coltras35

MYSTERIOUS MR. MOTO(1938):
(See sets: Mr. Moto Set)

This starts with an escape from Devil's Island!
It ends up with him tracking down a gang of
assassins in Tailand! A much better movie than
the last two! A

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

The charismatic Peter Lorre stars as Mr Moto, a
cunning international policeman, who is working
undercover to not just to bust up a criminal
outfit called the league of assassins, but to
uncover the ring leader. Consequently he foils
an assassin en route. What I loved was how smart
he was, fooling his enemies into thinking he's
meek. Why, he throws some of the bad guys around
with judo throws and leaps at one villain like
he's jumping off a trampoline. Great fun. - coltras35

MR. MOTO'S LAST WARNING(1939):
(See sets: Mr. Moto Set)

"Mr. Moto" gets off a ship where he's been
trailing a band of n'eredowells who are Hell
bent on causing a rift between Great Britain
and France!! He promptly gets offed and the
whole thing shifts to a vaudville show where
much foulness is afoot!! A

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

This time Mr. Moto is after Fabian the Great!
Fabian is an international agent posing in a
traveling show as a ventriloquist along with
his henchmen. Fabian and gang are trying to
blow up the entrance to the Suez Canal and
start an international war. The particular
country Fabian is working for and the motives
as to why are kept a secret, it's up to the
viewer to guess because they never tell
us - Mr. Moto may loose his job over it
(you'll have to watch the film until the
ending to get a full understanding of
what I mean).

The movie is fun to watch. It has it's moments
of intensity, comedy and sometimes quite a bit
of action. Worth your time watching if you like
the other Mr. Moto films, Peter Lorre or mysteries
in general.

7.5/10 - Rainey Dawn

MR. MOTO IN DANGER ISLAND(1939):
(See sets: Mr. Moto Set)

Moto comes down with an appendicitis attack!
He was on the way to help out a diamond
syndicate with inferior diamonds coming out
of South America! There's obviously someone
on the inside of the syndicate behind the
smuggling and murders that abound! A

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

This is one of the later Moto pictures and
not as good as the earlier ones. Peter Lorre
is his usual great self. And, there is a great
nostalgic sense of the time and setting. But
it doesn't have as much life as the previous
entries in the series. It is still worth seeing.
Just don't expect to see Moto at his best.
It is better than "Mr. Moto's Gamble" and
far better than the 60's attempt at reviving
the character, "The Return of Mr. Moto".
This was based on the novel, "Murder in
Trinidad" which did not feature Moto and
was filmed before and since. For this film
the locale was changed to Puerto Rico. At
one time this was slated to be filmed as
a Charlie Chan film, "Charlie Chan in
Trinidad". - admjtk1701

MR. MOTO TAKES A VACATION(1939):
(See sets: Mr. Moto Set)

The last Mr. Moto with Peter Lorre as the
famous detective! This one is all about an
ancient crown that's been unearthed by none
other than Mr. Moto in disguise! He is later
tasked with trying to protect it from thieves
and a bumbling Scotland Yard detective! Except
for the rediculous detective, this is a great
movie! A-

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

This is one of my favorite Mr. Motos, and I have
seen them all. As usual Lorre is his charming
self as the debonair Mr. Moto. Lionel Atwill
plays a delightfully zany museum curator, the
usual comic relief is quite funny here, and
there are lots of suspects on whom to cast an
eye. It's fast paced and fun.

The archaeologist doesn't have quite the same
flair as Thomas Beck, the usual second lead in
these programmers, but he's adequate. Stepin
Fetchit is on board, and while he speaks in
a stereotypical manner his lines are funny,
not demeaning to his intelligence, and he
actually saves the day in his brief time
on screen. - Film_Dex

THE RETURN OF MR. MOTO(1965):
(See sets: Mr. Moto Set)

A new Moto, and a terrible choice in my humble
opinion! This starts out like every other spy
movie in the 60s!! The cruxt is that the oil
wells in Saudi Arabia are being blown up, and
the rich dudes that own said oil wells want
answers and hire Mr. Moto to figure it all
out!! B

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

It's called The Return of Mr. Moto (1965) Henry
Silva. "Last full length feature of Ian Fleming".
Perhaps, but it's not our Mr. Moto (Peter Lorre).
Filmed at Shepperton Studios, which might give
you a hint to the boredom ahead.

In this one Mr. Moto works for Interpol, investigating
an oil mogul murder. The setting is international,
ala Bond. Very dry. Tedious. Moto (actually calls
himself "Mr. Tugura" so there is no reason for the
movie title) goes into disguise eventually as a
Japanese who's doing a Charlie Chan impression.

It's not that it's cheesy. It's just boring. No
camp. No charm. As a "Mystery/Thriller" it wasn't
mysterious or thrilling. And I actually like Henry
Silva… usually. - RemiFasolati-881-771882
