MR. WONG SET:

The 6 movies from the Mr. Wong series of movies! This
wasn't an actual set, but the six single movies sold
as a bundle!!

First things first: THERE IS NO CLOSED CAPTIONING ON
ANY OF THESE!!! These are all MOD movies, which means
Amazon created these as the orders came in! There is
no logical reason to not have closed captioning!!!!
Also, absolutely no attempt at cleaning these up, they
are quite grainy, and the night time scenes are next
to impossible to see what's going on!!

MR. WONG DETECTIVE(1938):
(See also: Sets: 100 Greatest Mystery Classics)

Boris Karloff plays the Chinese detective Mr. Wong
in this first of five films that he starred in!! This
is a "door is locked from the inside and a man is
killed" murder mystery, which Wong solves with much
fun!! Kinda like Sherlock Holmes, but without the
flair or sidekick to help out!! Still, a good little
detective movie!! B+

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

This is another good Boris Karloff Mr. Wong film. I
found the film average paced (not slow nor quick - about
right for a film of this nature).

This time Mr. Wong is trying to find out who is killing
people at the chemical manufacturing plant - the
bosses/partners are dying off one by one by a
poisonous gas. It is an international spy ring that
wants a particular formula and it's up to Mr. Wong
& Captain Sam Street to find out who and why they
are doing this.

Worth watching if you like mysteries, Mr. Wong films
and/or Boris Karloff - it's a really fun watch! 8/10 - Rainey Dawn

MYSTERY OF MR. WONG(1939)

This second outing for Karloff and Mr. Wong
finds him trying to find out who killed a man
while he was doing a vignette at a party with
his wife and friend!! It looks pretty open and
shut, but things are not always as they seem,
which Mr. Wong knows quite well!! As an asside
here, there's a very valuable artifact that's
been stolen from China that is part of the whole
mystery!! This is a great movie!! A

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

The Mystery of Mr. Wong (1939)

This is the second film in the Monogram series featuring
Boris Karloff as the soft-spoken Chinese detective, James
Lee Wong. Here he must unravel the reason behind the
unexpected shooting death of a jealous husband at a party,
and the secret surrounding a cursed sapphire that was
smuggled out of China. Though not quite believable here
as an Asian man, Karloff is still interesting to watch in an
understated characterization, and this is possibly the best
of the Mr. Wong offerings from a rather pedestrian collection.

MR. WONG IN CHINATOWN(1939):

Not sure why but I just couldn't get into this
one as much as the previous Wong movie! I just
seemed to get bored of it! Not a terrible movie,
nor story, nor acting, just not as engrosing as
the previous two!! B

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

Mr. Wong in Chinatown (1939)

I've seen a number of these Boris Karloff movies
where he plays the Chinese detective Mr. Wong,
and I can never quite get used to the idea that they
cast Karloff in that role. Oddly, he's the best part
of the series (he was a great actor, really, going far
beyond being a great Monster.

There was the potential at first for some pre-WWII
intrigue, because the key element behind the
murders with the poison darts is a shipment of
airplanes (which seem a bit tricky to smuggle, but
whatever). Nothing really comes of it, however.
Strickly low budget.

This one is a routine affair, with the chipper female
reporter to spice up the dialog. I'm not sure I'd
recommend it in particular! - secondtake

Ernie Stanton ... Burton

THE FATAL HOUR(1940):

This is much better than the last installment!
A cop from the smuggling detail is found dead in
the river and he was a personal friend of Inspector
Street and well liked in the force! Dead bodies abound
in this, attached to both smuggling and jealousy! Wong
solves the case as usual, but this time gets help from
a mostly annoying person!! A

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

This was a pretty fun Mr. Wong detective story. It
has a few comical moments in it and the story was
good. Mr. Wong is after a smuggling ring & unmasks
a murderer.

The Mr. Wong series is quite fun. If you like any of
the Sherlock Holmes movies then it's possible you
will like the Mr. Wong series starring Boris Karloff.

What is interesting in this particular film, it features
a wireless remote controlled radio. This radio was
reality - it was not made up for the film. There is an
article about the radio on CNet called "Back to the
future: 1939 wireless remote control!" The article's
subtitle reads: "Philco's Mystery Control (1939) was
a battery-operated radio transmitter, so it didn't have
to be in the same room as the radio it was controlling."
Also, you can read more about this cool invention
on Philco's website. That is a neat trivia fact I just
learned about today.

Yes this film is worth watching if you are a fan of
detective stories or Boris Karloff.

6/10 - Rainey Dawn

DOOMED TO DIE(1940):

Karloff's last turn at Mr. Wong!! This one is as
good as the rest!! A shipping magnet is killed with
a young man in his office who was there to ask for
his daughter's hand in marraige!! Wong gets involved
as there are many suspects! A

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

"Doomed to Die" is a fun Karloff 'Mr. Wong' detective
mystery-thriller. It's got a fair amount of suspense and
a couple of twists that will keep you guessing who the
murderer is.

There is a comical duo in this movie that quite hilarious
at times; they are Roberta 'Bobbie' Logan and Capt.
William "Bill" Street. These two really help bring some
light into an otherwise dark film.

The Boris Karloff 'Mr. Wong' film series are worth
watching if you are into crime mystery-thrillers similar
to Sherlock Holmes. And "Doomed to Die" is definitely
a good movie.

A little fun trivia fact: According to the US Inflation
Calculator, those two martini's in the film costing $4.00
total would cost you $67.60 for both today (2015) - that
is $33.80 for each martini or $2.00 each in 1940.

8.5/10 - Rainey Dawn

Richard Loo ... Tong Leader

PHANTOM OF CHINATOWN(1940):

Karloff is gone and Charlie Chan's #1 son is here!!
This is shot as a "prequel", that is, a time frame
before the original movies! This explains the considerably
younger Mr. Wong, but unfortunately doesn't explaing
why the good inspector isn't a younger version!! Anyway,
this is a pretty good movie, just not quite of the
quality of the first five films with Karloff!! B

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

Asian detectives were usually played by Caucasian
actors at the time this movie was made, but Phantom
of Chinatown is an exception and features Keye Luke
in the role of Mr. Wong. Luke makes a likable and younger
version of Wong and it's great fun to see how Wong
and Captain Street first met. Grant Withers as Captain
Street is one of my favorites elements of the Mr Wong
movies. Withers is exceptionally good in this one. Some
have said that Withers should have been replaced with
a younger actor for this "prequel", but I don't agree.
Luke and Withers make a fun pair. I enjoy all of the
Mr Wong series, but Phantom of Chinatown is one
of my absolute favorites. - film-guy

Cast Of Phantom Of Chinatown:
