20 MUSICALS MOVIE COLLECTION:
20 musicals from years gone by!! These are all on 5
discs, with 4 movies on each disc!! As with almost
all of Mill Creeks DVD releases, there is no closed
captioning on any of these, and the quality is less
than stellar!! One other thing, this set coulda been
called the Rita Hayworth and others set!!
MUSIC IN MY HEART(1940):
Another shrill singer! However, this is quite
fun! All the particulars do a great job! The
music is fine and there's good humor throughout! B
From another reviewer at IMDb:
This has to be one of the most underrated of Rita's films,
yet is up there with the best. A very short runtime of just
69 minutes, it still manages to dish up a delightful 'boy
meets girl' tale - when their cabs collide, of course
changing both their destinies. A simple little musical, it
gives Rita just the one dance, which is not photographed
all that well, but shows what will be in years to come. Any
Rita fans out there, you will thoroughly enjoy this I
guarantee it. I almost didn't buy it when I had the chance
due to not being able to find reviews anywhere, so I feel
I have to write this to save someone else from passing it
up! -: RitaRisque from Australia

This hilarious and very hep B grade Columbia musical
turns up often on Australian Television, so someone at
Channel 9 besides me likes to see it programmed a lot.
Good swing/jive music, great Ann Miller tap numbers,
some spooky boogie woogie, Allen Jenkins being obnoxious
and a lot of very funny 3 stooges routines.....and Brenda
and Corvina....yikes! Two female stooges! I would never
have believed it. Must have been great fun to see in
the 40s in a 2000 seater and a full house. The "Twiddling

toe tapper from Ms Miller. - ptb-8 from Australia

At least this isn't western and it IS a musical!
I never had seen Mae West in a movie, and never
knew that she wasn't a great singer! I think she
only made it because of her, um, brains?! LOL!
Anyway, a show producer has a clunker on his hands
and his big star, Mae, walks out and goes to a
competetor! This isn't a great movie! C-
From another reviewer at IMDb:
Watching this is painful. Mae West has little to do.
What she has, she does decently. Mae was never a true
beauty, at least not in movies. Here she looks her age
and the Gay Nineties costume seems more out of place
than it does in other, earlier, better movies.
She isn't even billed over the title.
It's a hapless review, with Xavier Cugat and some
corn-pone comedy.
Hazel Scott's appearances are good but nothing I'd
have sought out and irrelevant to Mae.
Sextette seemed like a vanity production, a mistake
of her own making. This is a hodgepodge that gives her
little to do and is as prim as the bluenose character
in its plot (amusingly played by Almira

Another western! Not my favorite type of movies!!
This one is short: 54 minutes! The usual western
fair, one good guy VS a town of baddies! As for
being a musical, um, not really, although there
is Bob Wills here! C+
From another reviewer at IMDb:
What a treat, Lucky Hayden ridin', ropin', shootin',
Dub Taylor as Cannonball with plenty of funny lines
to deliver and Lucky giving it right back to him in
kind, the music legend Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys
performing the likes of "Hubbin' It," a pretty colleen,
Ann Savage as Ann Parker, a dastardly outlaw boss,
William Wright as Krag Savin, some of the meanest
henchmen in the business, lots of action and terrific
stunt work! As Gershwin would say, "Who could ask for
anything more?" The alternate title for "Saddles and
Sagebrush," "Pay-Off," is more descriptive of the film.
The script is fairly routine, sort of a range war type
theme. It seems an outlaw gang is trying to drive the
homesteaders out and take the government land for
themselves. One of the henchmen in charge of finding
hired guns finds the wrong hired gun, Lucky. When Lucky
sees for himself what is happening, he sides with the
homesteaders and brings his cowboys to help defeat
the outlaws.
Bob Wills has a second lead in the film. Though Wills
didn't originate Western Swing, he did popularize it.
After the untimely death of Milton Brown in a car
accident, Wills had no serious rivals. He could out
fiddle any of his contemporaries. Plus he was an
original and creative musician who wrote much of his
own material. His lead vocalist was usually Tommy
Duncan and Bob would do the ah-hahs and other asides,
but he was also a singer and in "Saddles and Sagebrush,"
he does the vocals for the Texas Playboys. The songs
in the film were all composed by Bob Wills and Cindy
Walker, one of the finest songwriters in country music.
Dub Taylor, Lucky's comical sidekick Cannonball, was
not only a fine comedian and actor but was himself
a musician, though he doesn't play his xylophone in
"Saddles and Sagebrush." The repartee between Cannonball
and Lucky is electric, for example Cannonball tells
Lucky that he'll be right behind him, "Maybe you'll
need some help." Lucky retorts, "If I do, I send you
after some." If you're a fan of the Saturday matinee
westerns, you should enjoy this one.-: krorie from

is to sell War Bonds! Fun to watch! B+
From another reviewer at IMDb:
Kay Kyser had many top-selling recordings, but his
Kollege of Musical Knowledge show, both live and on
the radio, was more of a floor show than the performances
of other swing bands and orchestras. His show is, of
course, incorporated into this film. So in that respect,
the film bears resemblance to other films in which Kyser
appeared.
The extra bonus is the addition of sweet and lovely Ann
Miller to the cast. Unfortunately, her one and only
dance performance is butchered by cutaway shots and
editing, so that about half is gone. You can only faintly
hear the singing and tapping in the background.
What's left, however, is still pure Miller magic.

The story, supposedly, of Frydryk Chopin! Some
of the facts are twisted, but the music is all
anyone would be interested in anyway! While not
riviting, in fact somewhat boring, it still
has some interesting parts and worth a watch
for any classical music fans! C+
From IMDb.com:
This gives Night And Day and Words And Music a run
for their money in the least-like-the-truth bio-pic
stakes in fact virtually the only thing actually
authentic is the music that really was written by
someone named Frederic Chopin who had only a name
in common with the character played by Cornel Wilde
here. The music, of course, is magnificent even when
truncated and played by the very bush league Jose
Iturbi when none of the heavy hitters - Rubinstein
etc - would touch it. Paul Muni (who shares top billing
with Merle Oberon, neither of whom played Chopin, go
figure) gives a Master-Class in over-the-top screen
acting whilst what acting honors there are are divided
equally between Merle Oberon as George Sand and
third-billed Cornel Wilde as Chopin. Worth watching
if only for the music. - writers_reign

From IMDb.com:
This film is based on a real theater and theater troop
during WWII. The theater never closed its doors despite
the Blitz with bombs falling all around and over it. (It
was an underground theater.) It's a part of England's
history.
This isn't the best film ever made, but certainly not the
worst as some have made it out to be. It's simply a light
musical mixed with drama.
To see another take on this story be sure to see "Mrs.
Henderson Presents" with Dame Judy Dench and Bob Hoskins.
It's a fantastic film that really presents the way it was
"back then." I know, because I was around then and this
film brought back some good and some bad memories.

Another telling of the story "Heaven Can Wait"!
Some pretty well known actors(William Frawley,
Rita Hayworth, Edward William Horton), same
old story, kinda! In this one one of the nymphs
"up above" thinks that her "good name" is being
besmirched! She talks the dude in charge to let
her go down to "help" out the producer making a
play about them! C+
From IMDb.com:
I am a huge Heyworth fan - her dynamism, energy, joy,
and smolder are all here in abundance - but you do feel
she's bashing her head against a brick wall - the film's
male stars are dull, the music is mostly misdirected,
and it has moments that are toe-curling bad.
However, if you just watch Heyworth's performance, and
ignore the frankly horrible mess up on the screen then
this is worth your time - at nearly 2 hours it pushes
the trust of the most dedicated movie watcher - and
it clearly is a star vehicle that was rushed together.
Heyworth always, but always, gives of herself and that
joie de vivre does leap off the screen massively, but
if you're hoping for a good classic, musical with tunes
you can hum and romance that will make your heart beat
faster then, sorry, this won't be that
one.... - intelearts from the big screen

canned when the star of his show collapses from

From another reviewer at IMDb:
I knew nothing of this film, but watching it one
immediately sees the extraordinary quality of the
direction and production.
I didn't know that Dorothy Lamour began her career
as a singer for a big band and later sang on radio
for network shows. She was Miss New Orleans in 1931
and her heritage included being Spanish. Looking at
her she reminds one of Katy Jurado and could have
played roles for Latin characters. In this film I
think she was especially effective when she played
"herself", Mary the carny girl. The production
numbers were excellent and indicated the direction
dance numbers would be presented in the future.

This movie seems to start in the middle of the
story! Not sure if it does or not, but it sure
seems that way! Anyway, the basic story is that
there's a crooked judge in said Bonanza Town and
the good guys are out to make things right! A
western, and I'm not fond of westerns! And this
is quite a stretch to call it a musical!! C+
From another reviewer at IMDb:
The Durango Kid is called upon to clean up a town beset
by a ruthless gang that goes unmolested due to the town's
judge being in their hip pocket.
Bonanza Town is technically well made, fairly fast-paced,
with an adequate amount of action, and also features a
few good songs courtesy of Smiley Burnette. However, the
script is quite tepid and the movie very forgettable.
I've never seen any of The Durango Kid movies before this
one, so I'm not sure how it holds up to others in the
series. But the fact that this Saturday matinée style
B-western was made in 1951 instead of 1941 and the studio
was Columbia Pictures and not Producers Releasing Corporation
or Monogram Pictures, leads me to believe that this should
have been a better overall picture than it ultimately
was. - FightingWesterner from The Lonesome Prairie

Starring Hans Conried(I always thought it was
Vincent Price!) as Dr. T(stands for Terwilliker),
this is told through the eyes of a twelve year
old boy(played by Tommy Rettig[of Lassie fame!])!
Not much of a musical and it's really aimed at
children!! C
From another reviewer at IMDb:
The bane of adolescent Bart Collins' existence is
the piano lessons he is forced to take under the
tutelage of Dr. Terwilliker, the only person he
admits he detests because of his dictatorial nature.
Bart feels Dr. Terwilliker has undue influence for
these lessons on his widowed mother, Heloise Collins.
The one person who sympathizes with Bart, although
quietly on the sidelines, is the Collins' plumber,
August Zabladowski.
Seuss has made some strange books, which become strange
movies. So far as I know this was never a book. But it
is strange, and takes what is typically a cartoon format
and brings it to life... with music, odd questions,
dancing and some dark humor. It's like "Seven Brides
From Seven Brothers" meets "Cat in the Hat", only
darker. - gavin6942 from United States

Well, first things first, 15 minutes in to the
movie, not a song to be heard. But there is
Rita Hayworth LOL! At 15:30, a song: "Rock Of
Ages" along with "A Marine"! Not much music,
not much humor, pretty scenery and not much
of a plot! And what plot there is is really
mean spirited! C-
From another reviewer at IMDb:
At a postwar isolated Pacific military outpost, the
men are all taken with Sadie Thompson (Rita Hayworth)
who is stopping for a couple of hours in between ships.
They try to hide her from the rest of the base. She
becomes the toast of the club and finds that she has
to stay for a week due to quarantine. The religious Mr.
Davidson is the head of the Mission Board who tries to
run her off the island before she catches her boat to
Sydney. She doesn't want to go back San Francisco and
he suspects she's on the run from the law after being
in the notorious Emerald Club of Honolulu. Marine Sgt.
Phil O'Hara falls for the brash show girl.
Rita Hayworth rides that boat onto the island and shows
her star power. She puts on a big show in this movie.
Jose Ferrer is a good cold foil for her. Aldo Ray is
a meathead. I can only imagine if the O'Hara role is
played by somebody great like Marlon Brando. The story
seems to be stuck between something really juicy and a
bad morality play. It's a hard-boiled romance exploitation
movie. I don't know what it looks like in 3D. It's not
obviously shot that way. At its core, Hayworth shows that
she still has it. - SnoopyStyle

I love old movies. Loved the original and was pleasantly
surprised by this one. Did not know I was watching a remake
until a bit into the movie. The clothes were fabulous and
the script was funny. I liked the songs and thought Wyman
was better than Irene Dunn in her part. The 2 Rays were OK,
but they were no match for Carey Grant and Ralph Belamy in
the original. Good actors have a range and Wyman showed
hers here. She was delightful as the sister. I think some
reviewers were a little hard on this remake. It may not be
as good as the original, but it was still great. No need for
Ray Milland to be ashamed. Nice way for him make nice bucks.

This coulda been a great movie. Not sure exactly
what the problem here is. The music is just so-so,
the acting wasn't bad, it had a couple of good
actorr, but over all it was just ok! C+
From another reviewer at IMDb:
This is a remake of TOO MANY HUSBANDS, which had
starred Jean Arthur, Fred MacMurray, and Melvyn Douglas.
Here, we get a tepid musical with Betty Grable and Jack
Lemmon and Gower Champion as the male leads. The plot
has been dismissed in favor of some musical numbers oddly
built around decades-old Gershwin songs. Marge Champion
and Myron McCormick co-star.
Lemmon has been proclaimed dead in the war (which war?)
so Grable marries Champion. Lemmon returns, and the guys
battle over the hefty star while Marge look on is distress.
In the original film, the ending is ambiguous with both
guys still in Arthur's life. Here, she pairs off with
Lemmon. Bleh.
Gower Champion might have been a good dancer and director
but he's a zero as a romantic lead. So is Lemmon. Marge
Champion (a terrific beard) looks like Bea Benaderet in
corsets. The MGM darlings (the Champions) were a total bust
in films. Grable was long past her prime and even though
she's only 39 here, looks OLD and FAT. - drednm from United States

From another reviewer at IMDb:
What should have been an interesting film had they
played it more dramatically turns into an also ran
in Hot Blood. Some how it just doesn't quite gel on
the screen. Neither do Cornel Wilde and Jane Russell
gel either.
The real star here is Luther Adler who is Wilde's
older brother and King of the local gypsy tribe in
Los Angeles. But undisclosed health reasons are
forcing an abdication on the king. He wants very
much to move his younger brother Cornel Wilde into
the throne.
But Wilde isn't having any, he's having too much of
a good time as a part time dance instructor and full
time hell-raiser. What Adler decides is he needs a
good woman.
Enter Jane Russell who Wilde buys as a gypsy bride
from her father Joseph Calleia. Would you believe
that someone would have to be tricked into marrying
Jane Russell? Sad, but true and Wilde is the unlucky
patsy who's the mark in one of the great gypsy con
games.
I think Nicholas Ray might have succeeded with this
film had it been treated more dramatically. A few
numbers for Jane Russell never hurt in films like His
Kind Of Woman, but there was too much emphasis here.
And doubles were obviously used in the dancing for
Wilde and Russell.
This had the potential to be a lot better, but fans
of the two stars will enjoy. And Luther Adler is just
great in his part. - bkoganbing from Buffalo, New York

With Jack Lemon, Henny Youngman & Jim Backus
you would think that this would be hilarious!
And you wouldn't think of this as a musical!!
Well, it does have the Four Aces in it. June
Allyson plays a rich little brat used to getting
her way. She's got to be the oldest brides(just
shy of 40!) I've ever seen! And she's still
being run by her daddy! So she runs away from
said father and meets Jack on a bus! Jack
does great in this! I suppose that June does
too, but her character is so unlikeable that
it's hard to tell! And as for a musical, it
leaves a lot to be desired! B-
From another reviewer at IMDb:
Pale imitation of It Happened One Night fails to
capture the magic of the original, a fools errand
to attempt in the first place, but is pleasant enough.
One of the problems is that Jack Lemmon and June
Allyson share little chemistry, a vital component
to the first film or any romantic comedy. Another
is that June, 39 when this was made, while still
very attractive is a bit mature to be convincing
as a madcap runaway heiress. Debbie Reynolds, who
was in her mid-twenties at the time would have been
a better fit.
Scenes that crackled in the first just move the story
along in this from place to place. Full of forgettable
music which adds nothing to the original tale and a the
high gloss look that was a signature of 50's cinema.

This has some really great music here! Bill
Haley's "Rock Around The Clock", "See You

Platters' "Only You" & "The Great Pretender"!
The story is basically a dude that's been
the manager of some big bands decides that
the big bands are a dying breed! On the way
to somewhere, they run into Billy Haley and
His Comets and he decides that this is what
he's looking for!
Perhaps the best movie on the set!! A
From another reviewer at IMDb:
This is a magic film that captures the excitement of
early rock n roll and the people who played it. Bill
Haley and his comets are outstanding in what should
be officially recognised as part of Movie history.
The first ever rock n roll film to be made maybe a bit
thin on the plot line, but makes up for it with its
exciting dance scenes and thumping jumping music.
Some previous comments have said they found the Lisa
Gaye and Johnny Johnston characters age gap to be
creepy. I didn't have a problem with this at all, as
lots of young women married older men during the
forties and fifties. Lisa Gaye was over 21 and Johnston
was in his early thirties when the film was shot. "Rock
around the Clock" is now out on DVD (not sure about the
UK yet) and looks splendid in a re-mastered and restored
edition that is well worth buying. Check out Earl Barton
as Lisa's brother and dancing partner. Barton actually
choreographed all the dance scenes and at the time was
a much respected Hollywood choreographer. I'm giving this
film a ten out of ten Daddio as it was the first and
the best of the rock and roll films made during the
fifties. - mike-2620 from United Kingdom

Well then, here we have an "Elvis" type movie with
Anthony Newley playing a freshly drafted singer
who was put in the wrong platoon and the whole
show is about how he ruins the British Army! C+
From another reviewer at IMDb:
This movie was intended as a spoof of Elvis' entry to
the army with Newley playing an "idol" called Jeep Jackson.
The great British public took the film seriously however
and overnight Anthony Newley, former child actor became
a fully fledged adult actor/pop singer. The film is a
delightful comedy in the same vein as Carry On Sergeant
with the added bonus of four musical numbers performed
by Newley. Look out for many star faces who later had
very successful careers of their own - Sid James,
Bernie Winters and Harry Fowler! Pure nostalgia enjoy! -
