MUSICALS - KING KELLY OF THE USA(1934)

Same old story: man meets girl and falls in love
in seven seconds! Girl is the daughter of the king
of the land that he and the ladies with him are
going to to put on a show! What the girl and the
dude don't know is that the country is bankrupt! C+

From IMDb.com:

Well it was an old movie from the 30's. So naturally it
wasn't up to todays standards and a little lame. But yet
you see and find very up to date remarks and acting talents.
Edgar Kennedy stole the show. It even had (and please for
give me I cant think of her name) the black actress who
played an Aunt Jamime character. It was a lame but still
an entertaining movie. I did recognize a few faces from
movies I remember from the late forty's and early fifty's
when I was younger and went to a lot of movies. Its a little
hard to give ten lines to a 66minute movie. I did like the
scene of the air blast from the floor, blowing up the
ladies skirts, a forshadow to a future Marlyn Monroe movie.
Its fun to see the mistakes. - Ducko137

MUSICALS - PALOOKA(1934)

I am not, never have been, and never will be a
fan of boxing, whether it be "real" or in movies
(sorry Rocky fans)! This does have the added help
of having Jimmy Durante in it, which he does great!
But the one thing I'm not sure of is how this is
touted as a "musical"!! This is pretty resque for
its era! C+

From IMDb.com:

I found this gem in the bargain bin but it is a must
see for anyone interested in classic movies. I am a
huge Jimmy Durante fan and he was terrific, but I
thought Lupe Valez stole the show. She was an incredible
comedic actress who died much too young. She lead a
tragic life but you would never know it by her performance
here. Jimmy Durante was just non stop in your face
comedy. He was a great entertainer with heart and
intensity. Also, William Cagney did a wonderful job
as Al McSwatt and Marjorie Rambeau was unforgettable
as Mayme Palooka. This had me laughing from start
to finish and the ending was the biggest laugh of
all. - frankd-64766

MUSICALS - BIG SHOW, THE(1936)

Gene plays a stunt man who gets his shot at
stardom when the star of the studio takes a
break! Even though I'm not a big western fan,
this is actually quite fun! Gene fills in for
the star of the studio at the Texas Centennial
Celebration where no one knows that he's really
Gene! B+

From IMDb.com:

The Big Show is about the most enjoyable to watch
of all his movies for several reasons: One, Mr. Autry
plays a double role. Two, there is a lot of clever
stunt work, including the famous under the coach and
handover hand to the horses stunt. Three, The Big Show
has a very different plot from the usual Autry Western.
Four, The Big Show contains some very listen-able songs.
Five, it is really fun to see Roy Rogers when he was
still with the Sons of the Pioneers as Leanard Slye.
Six, it is also fun to see behind the scenes of movie
making, with some back views of the Republic lot. Seven,
since this is an earlier Autry entry, Smiley Burnett
is Mr. Autry's side kick rather than Pat Butram. Eight,
it is exciting to see the Texas Centennial Celebration
as a background. All in all, this is one is really
fun. - Sharclon8

MUSICALS - SITTING ON THE MOON(1936)

As "B" movies go, this is an! A+

From IMDb.com:

Good little 'B' musical with some pluses going for
it, mainly Grace Bradley. Vivacious and very pretty,
she brightens every scene she appears in. And she
can sing, in addition to her other assets. Had never
heard of this picture before, and as someone noted,
it was most likely the bottom half of a double feature.

"Sitting On The Moon" just goes to show you; you never
can tell where or when a good movie will pop up - even
tiny Republic Studios could ring the bell once in a while.
I especially liked the closing number, "Lost in My Dreams",
a song never heard nowadays. - GManfred

MUSICALS - RHYTHM IN THE CLOUDS(1937)

This is quite a bit better than most of the
other movies in this set!! Very surprised by
the whole thing! Worth a watch every once in
awhile! A-

From IMDb.com:

Being a HUGE fan of actress Patricia Ellis I HAD
to see this film and tho its meager budget shows
from start to finish I enjoyed it nonetheless. The
songs are nothing to write home about and leading
man Warren Hull is certainly bland but the comedy
bits and the fact that the lovely miss Ellis is in
nearly the entire picture from start to finish makes
it worth a look! Most of the films she made during
her earlier days at Warner Bros she is second lead
or less and spends precious little time on screen
so it was a big treat for me, and she looked great!
some of the supporting players are quite good as
well. i found this on DVD on ebay for around $3.00
and consider it money well-spent! - artman-8
