MUSICALS - SOUNDIES CAVALCADE(1945)

This has a few shorts to it! The first one
starts with no title or stars, but after much
research I finally found out what it is!!
These are really just musical shorts! C-

First short: I Ain't Gonna Open That Door
(AKA: Answer To Open The Door Richard:

This is just plain silly!!

From IMDb.com:

Comedian Dusty Fletcher was best known for
his comedy sketch, "Open the Door Richard,"
in which he played a drunk trying to get
into his apartment, futilely begging his
roommate Richard to, "open the door, Richard."
That routine was recorded in a 1945 short
in which Fletcher performed it on a nightclub
stage set. Richard is never seen in that short.

This musical short, really just one song,
is the answer to that routine. Stepin Fetchit
plays Richard, and Dusty Fletcher doesn't
appear. Fetchit lies in bed, and he talk-sings
his reply, "I Ain't Gonna Open That Door,"
to the accompaniment of Earl Bostic's band.
The public domain version doesn't include
all the opening credits, but there are also
two attractive actresses who appear briefly. - gimhoff

Cast of Unknown:

Earl Bostic ... Self (as Earl Bostic and His Orchestra)
Stepin Fetchit ... Richard
Flores Marmon ... Unknown
Kay McKinney ... Unknown

The next one is Murder In Swingtime(1937):

Not terrible, and the music is good!

From IMDb.com:

"Murder in Swingtime" is really, really
weird but likable. Back in the day, this
sort of film was like the music video of
the day. And, in this case, it stars an
all-black cast. Whether it was shown in
all theaters or just black theaters, I
have no idea.

While a woman is singing, one of the
band members seems very disinterested
in her to say the least. After accidentally
bonking his head, he has a weird hallucination.
In this sequence, there is a weird jazzy
courtroom where everyone talks in rhyme.
And, the witnesses testifying all play
musical instruments in answer to questions
from the prosecutor! It makes no sense
at all and is a bit dumb...but also rather
likable. An odd little curio. - MartinHafer

Cast of Murder In Swingtime:

June Richmond ... Self?
Les Hite And His Orchestra ... Les Hite And His Orchestra

The last one is Boogie-Woogie Dream(1937):

This has a really great number by the piano
players!!

From IMDb.com:

This movie short features the talented music
of Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson, who play
their composition "Boogie Woogie Dream".

In addition, Lena Horne is featured singing
"Unlucky Woman" accompanied by Ammons, Johnson,
and Teddy Wilson and His Band. - vybdt

Cast of Boogie-Woogie Dream:

Lena Horne ... Self
Albert Ammons ... Self
Pete Johnson ... Self
Teddy Wilson ... Self
Virginia Pine ... Mr. W.'s date
Russell Morrison ... Mr. Weathercook
Teddy Wilson and His Band ... Themselves
Karl Farkas ... Minor Role (uncredited)

MUSICALS - SOUNDIES FESTIVAL(1945)

This is a compilation of several shorts! Quite
short really at 48 minutes+!

None of the shows are very good!!

One thing that's weird is that this is
said to be a 1945 release, but one of
the movies is dated from 1949!!! D+

The first one is Mr. Adams Bomb(1949):

Actually not terrible, just a short
comedy routine!

From IMDb.com:

In this weird all-black cast short, a man dances
to a jazz record with his maid, until his wife
and daughter discover him. His wife isn't pleased
by the music or him dancing with the maid. They
talk about how Uncle Adam has been bringing
strange objects in bags into the house at midnight
for an experiment and they think maybe he has
a bomb. Someone notifies the police.

At the police station, two policemen do a routine
about what would happen in a confrontation with
"Slaughterhouse Mike." They plan to go to the
aforementioned family's house to find our if
Adam's working on an atom bomb.

At the house, there's some musical entertainment
for their guests with women dancing in costumes,
and the guests sing along. Adam does a magic
trick with one of the policemen while the other
searches the house. In the end the truth of the
mystery object is discovered. - FieCrier

Cast of Mr. Adams Bomb:

Jessica Grayson ... (as Jessie Grayson) Mildred Boyd ... Self
Eddie Green ... Self
Gene Ware ... Self

The next one is Bubbling Over(1934):

Just silly!

From IMDb.com:

I think this is the right "Bubbling Over"...

In this all-black short musical comedy,
a woman has a husband so lazy she can
stick a pin in him without him waking
up... but announcing lunch gets him up
pretty fast. She's also saddled with a
bevy of his lazy relatives. Four more
come by and sing as a quartet. After
the wife learns they had been traveling
men, she advises them to keep traveling
and kicks them out. The phony Swami who
lives upstairs announces that a wealthy
relative will come by to share his wealth;
unfortunately the man has actually just
been mistakenly released from a mental
asylum.

There's several songs, and nothing's
terribly memorable, but it's enjoyable
enough while it lasts. - FieCrier

Cast of Bubbling Over:

Ethel Waters ... Ethel Peabody
Southernaires Quartet ... Some Relatives
Hamtree Harrington ...Samson Peabody
Frank H. Wilson ... Swami River

The last one is Open The Door Richard(1947):

Another silly one!

From IMDb.com:

In a sketch performed in front of a nightclub
audience that provides scattered laughs
throughout, a drunk in top hat gets thrown
out by a bar proprietor along with a ladder
the drunk brought in. He constantly tries
to get his roommate Richard to open the door
to no avail. He also climbs the nearly closed
ladder for no particular reason. The end.
A couple of things to mention: IMDb lists
Stepin Fetchit as playing Richard but he
doesn't appear here, and despite the title
of this short, no song of the same name
is performed which is what I expected when
I discovered this on Internet Archive. So
on that note, what I just watched was a
complete waste of time for me with nothing
funny to recommend here. - tavm

Cast of Open The Door Richard:

Dusty Fletcher ... Dusty Fletcher
Fred Winn ... Bartender

MUSICALS - BREAKFAST IN HOLLYWOOD(1946)

This is actually a pretty great movie with a
couple of great side stories! The main story
is about a radio show "Breakfast In Hollywood",
a comedy aimed at the fairer sex!

The two asides:
A young sailor meets a girl at the show who's
waiting for her beau who's already married,
but she doesn't know it! He falls for the girl
but she's so dispondant that she shuns him and
heads for home!

A man hits an eldery woman but he doesn't seem
to give a care! A-

From IMDb.com:

This unpretentious film with a remarkable cast
features one of the last movie appearances of
Bonita Granville, who deserves rediscovery through
everything from the newly released "Nancy Drew"
DVDs to a very effective performance in "These
Three." Here she boosts a simple programmer
with charm and conviction.

It's also a film where such contrasting acts
as Spike Jones and Nat King Cole appear, and
as bonus there's Hedda Hopper, who I always
thought had a very interesting screen presence.
I'm not familiar with the radio program the
film ostensibly showcases, but it was evidently
a popular fixture in its day. But it's Granville
who anchors the film with her appealing manner
and sincere acting. - westegg

Cast Of Breakfast In Hollywood:

Tom Breneman ... Tom Breneman - Host
Bonita Granville ... Dorothy Larson
Beulah Bondi ... Mrs. Annie Reed
Edward Ryan ... Ken Smith
Raymond Walburn ... Richard Cartwright (as Ray Walburn)
Billie Burke ... Mrs. Frances Cartwright
Zasu Pitts ... Elvira Spriggens
Hedda Hopper ... Hedda Hopper
Andy Russell ... Andy Russell - Singer
Spike Jones ... Spike Jones
Nat 'King' Cole ... Nat 'King' Cole

MUSICALS - DOLL FACE(1946)

Not a great story nor is the acting the greatest,
but the singing is top notch, especially Perry! B-

From IMDb.com:

Burlesque queen Doll Face Carroll is dismissed
from an audition for a legitimate Broadway show
because she lacks culture.

Her boss/manager Mike decides that she can
get both culture and plenty of publicity by
writing her autobiography.

He hires a ghost writer to do all the work,
but doesn't count on the possibility that
Doll Face and her collaborator might have
more than a book on their minds.

Fast moving movie based on the play. It's
a good watch, if dated and unfortunately
Carmen Miranda already was looking haggard
only in her 30s. She looks like she's in
her 50s. - arfdawg-1

Cast Of Doll Face:

Vivian Blaine ... Mary Elizabeth 'Doll Face' Carroll
Dennis O'Keefe ... Michael Francis 'Mike' Hannegan
Perry Como ... Nicky Ricci
Carmen Miranda ... Chita Chula
Martha Stewart ... Frankie Porter
Stephen Dunne ... Frederick Manly Gerard (as Michael Dunne)
Reed Hadley ... Flo Hartman
Stanley Prager ... Flo's Aide
Charles Tannen ... Flo's Aide
George E. Stone ... Stage Manager
Frank Orth ... Peters
Donald MacBride ... Lawyer Ferguson (as Donald McBride)
Bando da Lua ... Bando da Lua - Carmen Miranda's Orchestra

MUSICALS - PEOPLE ARE FUNNY(1946)

Anyone growing up in the 50s & 60s know this
long running TV show! This is a story about how
they took it from radio to TV! Totally made up
story, several good comedy actors here, and
the idea for the story wan't bad! It's just
not a great movie! C

From IMDb.com:

Sit back and enjoy this one. A story of two
producers that have been feuding for years.
Both end up with half the rights to a radio
program "People Are Funny." Along the way
to getting the program on the radio you get
to hear some very good musical numbers by
a variety of performers. The longer you
watch the more you realize that you really
like what you are seeing and hearing. - craig_smith9
