4 musicals starring the great Gene Kelly!!

MUSICALS - FOR ME AND MY GAL(1942)

This is Judy Garland's film, and the movie debut
of Gene Kelly! All about vaudaville in the 10s &
20s! There are some really great songs here: of
course the title song - "For Me And My Gal", "Oh,
You Beautiful Doll", "Oh, Johnny, Oh", "By The
Beautiful Sea", "After You've Gone" and several
others! A very typical story here, one singer
loves another singer/dancer but it isn't going
the way they would hope!

This really is a great movie!! A

From IMDb.com:

Gene Kelly makes his smashing screen debut in For
me and my gal. That alone should make it a must see.
This movie was a delight for numerous reasons. First,
I like the fact that this movie was a musical/drama.
So, we were able to get a full dose of the manifold
talents of Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. Second, the
chemistry that Judy and Gene had in this movie was
exceptional. The scene in which they are singing the
title song is riveting. George Murphy was solid in
his role as the amiable friend and colleague, who
was a good example of selflessness.

This movie is not as renowned as other Garland classics
such as the wizard of Oz and Meet me in St. Louis.
However, I think this was her most endearing role.
She was beautiful, sweet and vivacious in this movie.
I can watch this movie repeatedly, and so should everyone
else. - godsnewworldiscoming-1 from United States

This has two special movie shorts, "Every Sunday"
with Judy Garland & Deanna Durbin. It's about
an orchestra that plays in the local park that's
getting the boot because they don't pull in an
audience. Judy and Deanna liven up the affair! C+

The second one is "La Fiesta de Santa Barbara"
which seems to have no plot but several Hollywood
stars in it! D+

Also here are 2 deleted numbers: "For Me And My
Gal" & "Three Cheers For The Yanks", along with
a radio presentation of "For Me And My Gal"!

MUSICALS - ON THE TOWN(1949)

Not Earth shattering, and Frank isn't the lead!
But it's a nice piece of fluff that's fun to
watch! B+

From IMDb.com:

Three sailors on a day of shore leave in New York
City look for fun and romance before their twenty-four
hours are up.

You have to love any collaboration between Gene Kelly
and Stanley Donen. I am a little less impressed by
the singing and dancing of Frank Sinatra, but he is
alright in his own way. Vera-Ellen's terrifying waist
makes an appearance, and this is a good showcase for
her, even though she is now better known for "White
Christmas".

The Breen Office of the MPAA refused to allow the
use of the word "helluva" in the song "New York, New
York", and so it was changed to "wonderful". That
seems pretty strange, even for the 1940s. Though, I
have to wonder, what sort of movies would we have
today (2015) if the censors still had this kind of
power? - gavin6942 from United States

MUSICALS - SUMMER STOCK(1950)

I was not impressed with this movie! Again, this
is Judy Garland's movie, and she doesn't carry
it well! Gene does his best with what he has,
and of course his dancing, as always, is great!
I just couldn't get into it! C+

From IMDb.com:

One reviewer claimed Judy Garland looked overweight
and uncomfortable, and to some extent, I agree. She
was poorly costumed in ridiculous looking overalls
for much of the film. In the black/white show number,
while most of the girls wore sleek showgirl outfits,
Ms. Garland's dress looked like someone got it stuck
in a sewing machine.

That said, I adored this movie because of the
performances. Gene Kelly is absolutely stunning...a
gorgeous man with a gorgeous voice and dance ability
that would make the best Broadway "hoofer" jealous.
His scenes and songs with Judy were top-notch.

I had never seen this film until recently, and I
was delighted to see "Get Happy" was a part of this
film. It's one of the highlights of the movie, along
with a special tap dance routine Gene Kelly has with
a creaky floorboard and a piece of newspaper (wow,
is all I can say about that one).

See this movie because of the stars...they carried
it. A truly fun and enjoyable film, despite its
flaws. - jejarrell from United States

MUSICALS - INVITATION TO THE DANCE(1956)

Holly Hell, what was Gene thinking??!!! This is
not only boring, but VERY BORING!! Kinda like a
ballet, with no talking at all! Broken into three
parts: "Circus", "Ring Around The Rosy" & "Sinbad
The Sailor", each one as boring as the last! NOT
TO WATCH AGAIN!! Actually I stand corrected:
the last one, "Sinbad" really wasn't bad, it
has really decent animation! Kinda fun! C-

From IMDb.com:

In what must have been a daring move in the 1950s,
Gene Kelly created a film which was pure dance - three
sequences (Circus, Ring Around The Rosy, Sinbad the
Sailor).

Although not a great grosser in its day, time has
been kind to this film and although it is not that
well known, this film should be as it has a large
amount of charm.

The first section, Circus, is a story about a clown
and his unrequited love for the leading lady. A
common love triangle presented in ballet, this is
bittersweet and watchable.

In Ring Around The Rosy, a bracelet is lost and found
and there is a charming duet to watch ... while Sinbad
the Sailor includes a mix of real life and animation
in the story of the sailor and the genie.

As good as any of Kelly's other work, this should be
seen a lot more than it is. - didi-5 from United Kingdom
