GOLDEN AGE OF MUSICALS COLLECTION:

Most of these I have on other collections!!
Bummer!! Anyway, 17 movies that most people
have probably never heard of, with only two
new ones: "This Is The Army" & "At War With
The Army"!!!

SOMETHING TO SING ABOUT(1937):

A James Cagney vehicle wherein he plays, what
else, a dancer/singer/actor! He starts out in N.Y.
and winds up in Hollywood where he's doing great,
but the producer doesn't want him to know, so
he makes sure that no one making the film tells
him anything good about his abilities!! So he
feels like he's doing terrible and calls on his
sweetie to come and meet him and they get married!
They go on their honeymoon and everyone goes out
trying to find him because his movie is such a
success! A lot of mis-directing here! Several
laughs and some good music and dancing! B

From another reviewer at IMDb:

Hollywood was really turning the cameras on itself
when it made this 1937 movie. This is a very good
take-off on why so many Hollywood marriages fell
apart-mainly the studio system. So many stars of
the past blamed Hollywood for their marriages falling
apart. Right off the bat, I can think of Judy Garland
and David Rose.

Cagney proved what a great hoofer he was 5 years
before his Oscar win in "Yankee Doodle Dandy."

This wonderful Hollywood plot concerns itself with
Cagney making it big in Hollywood and then running
away and marrying his sweetheart, well played by
Evelyn Daw. Too bad we never heard much from her.

William Frawley, the future Fred Mertz, of I Love
Lucy Fame, steals the picture as a publicity agent
hell-bent on getting Cagney stature no matter what
the cost.

There is that accidental item that could cause a
fatal rift between the married couple but Hollywood
knew how to settle that so well in a final staging
of a song and dance number. - edwagreen from United States

DUKE IS TOPS, THE(1938):

An all all-black movie!

A pretty complex story of a man who's been the
producer behind a great singer! A couple of
dudes come along and offer her a chance to
go to New York to star! The man gives up
everything, including the girl, so she will
take the oppertunity and go to NY. Things
don't go swimmingly for either one! Whatever
will happen?! Lena Horne's first movie! B-

From another reviewer at IMDb:

An unusual film for an audience outside the USA. Lena
Horne looks fabulous and so does Ralph Cooper. There
is not added background of tap steps as in other
musicals so you do not hear the beat of the taps
which is great realism. Music is muted to hear what
dancing steps there are. Acting is a little stilted
and the casts speak slowly so that you think the
movie is older than it is. Costumes are daring for
the time in the dance routines at the end. Often feels
like you are part of an audience at a stage show. What
furniture you see is very modern which adds to the
movies feeling of other worldliness. A must for all
film buffs. - cfl-1 from United Kingdom

SECOND CHORUS(1940):

Fred as horn player! Who'da thunk! The whole
story revovles around him and Burgess Meredith
owing a bunch of money for some encyclopedias
that Burgess ordered under Fred's name!

The side story is that both boys are vieing
for the same girl, but does she know?? B

From another reviewer at IMDb:

Interesting, fun and full of entertainment starring
Fred Astaire and Burgess Meredith, two guys who purposely
fail their subjects in college each year so that they
can stay on and play in the band and make money for
themselves.

Owing money for encyclopedias purchased is the cause
for them to meet Paulette Goddard, secretary to the
guy who is ready to take them to court for non-payment.
They lure her away by some fabrication causing the boss
to fire her. She joins them and really lets her hair down.

Involving themselves with the Artie Shaw band, they do
an excellent job of sabotaging each other and become
venomous to the band industry.

Of course, they are able to get back but they soon
get involved with an investor who thinks he can go
and play music as well as having intentions with
Goddard as well.

Lots of fun and nostalgia for movie-goers
here. - edwagreen from United States

ALL AMERICAN CO-ED(1941):

An all-boys school try to extract revenge on
an all-girls school by tricking them into accepting
one of the boys in drag into their school! Not a
great movie, but not terrible! B-

From another reviewer at IMDb:

All-girl school Mar Brynn tries to get more pupils
and publicity by making fun of the Quincton college.

For revenge, the boys there sent Bob Sheppard to
Mar Brynn, dressed as a girl, to give them a slight
scandal.

But he falls in love with Virginia, the girl who is
putting on a show there.

Now Bob has the problem of getting revenge for Quinceton
and not loosing his girl, especially when Quinceton
hears about his relationship and decides to sent him
support.

Produced by Hal Roach who did all the Laurel & Hardy
and Little Rascal movies.

You cant go wrong with this entertaining movie. It's fun
stuff. Mindless but fun and watchable. - arfdawg-1 from United States

POT O' GOLD(1941)

Ok, a lot of music in this!! However, instead
of detracting from this movie it plays an
integral part of the movie! Jimmy Stewart
is wonderful in this, as well as the supporting
cast of hundreds! lol. A fun movie! B-

From an IMDb.com customer:

As a big fan of James Stewart, I just had
to see him in this classic musical. He is as
good as ever, fighting against cruel big business
and standing up for the little man, which in
this case is a boarding house band. The swing
music is fantastic, James Stewart's harmonica
playing and occasional singing is excellent,
the plot is remarkably coherent, and the whole
film is absolutely hilarious. In this film, madcap
comedy meets classic musicals. - Joshua M. Clark

PRIVATE BUCKAROO(1942):

It's a good thing that the music is great,
'cause the humor isn't!! Not a fan of Shemp!
But the Andrew Sisters & Harry James along
with Donald O'Conner make up for the faults!
Not a class A movie but enjoyable enough!
The kid is pretty fun, but doesn't say much! B-

From another reviewer at IMDb:

Between 1939 and 1942, Donald O'Connor had left
Paramount and went back to vaudeville. Then he signed
with Universal with his first picture there being
What's Cookin'. This was his second and like his
previous one, he appeared with another teen named
Peggy Ryan. They do a slight pantomime here during
an instrumental break in The Andrews Sisters number,
"Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree". Also during that
song, Shemp Howard gets hit and slapped by at least
one of those sisters. He also gets a few from Mary
Wickes as his on-off girlfriend. Also appearing
here is Huntz Hall-outside of The East Side
Kids-who has trouble training Harry James the
bugle (This sequence I found a little lame unlike
the other ones I just mentioned). There's also
some romantic subplot but never mind about that.
Just enjoy the music and some of the comedy bits
and you should enjoy Private Buckaroo just
fine. - tavm from Baton Rouge, LA

AT WAR WITH THE ARMY(1943):

Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis! How can this be
anything but great?! Well, first have Jerry
"sing"! This isn't much of a musical, Dean
sings two songs, Jerry warbles a couple. And
overall, except for Dean's music, this film
is quite a dud! C+

From another reviewer at IMDb:

Dean Martin is very funny as a frustrated office
sergeant in this Army comedy.

Polly Bergen is beautiful and she sings a song with
Dean, while Dean sings one song alone. Jerry 'The
Schmuck' Lewis is much less impressive.

Film was released in 1950, though the print you'll
see looks more like the movie was made in 1939. But
at least it's funny.

Base office scenes are great and magnify the kind
of stuff that goes on in the military. I worked in
Air Force administration and it was silly at times.
My favorite line is when the captain tells Dino to
send in "morning reports the night
before". - Matthew_Capitano from Beverly Hills, CA

STAGE DOOR CANTEEN(1943):

This is actually pretty serious! It shows how
young some of these boys were when they went
into the service! It also shows how some of
the stars treated these boys with respect!
And a touch of sadness! Anyway, the music is
good and the humor is very jolly indeed!

And one other thing here, this is LOOOOOONNNGGG!! A-

From another reviewer at IMDb:

I loved this film. I actually found it on youtube.
Most of the reviews have concentrated on the fact
that all those celebrities of the wartime era were
seen. And it was indeed lovely to see them especially
Katharine Hepburn who was lovely as ever. And the
beautiful Merle Oberon.

But for me the best part of the movie was the interaction
of the soldiers and the girls. And I was especially
enthralled by the performances of the little known
actor William Terry as Dakota and actress Cheryl Walker
as Eileen.

This was obviously their one chance to shine in a big
movie and I feel they did so magnificently. Indeed
without them I don't think there would have been a
film at all as you can't just have a movie filled
with a bunch of cameo performances.

I thought William Terry gave a lovely performance as
the gentle Dakota. While Cheryl Walker I thought to be
quite brilliant as the self centred Eileen who changes
at the end. Indeed there were tears in my eyes at the
conclusion. And it was definitely their performances that
made the movie for me. - Gary Lewin from United Kingdom

THIS IS THE ARMY(1943):

A propaganda film for the service! This has some
pretty well known people in it: Kate Smith, Ronald
Reagan & Rosemary DeCamp! But probably the most
important were the actual soldiers that were in
the service! Some pretty good music, and the longest
version of "God Bless America" ever recorded! LOL!
Not phenominal movie, just decent! And one more
thing, this is pretty long at almost 2 hours! C+

From another reviewer at IMDb:

First of all, had you done your research, you would've
known that all three branches of the military had (and
still have) entertainment divisions whose sole job is
to produce shows for the troops. If you looked at the
"Crazy Credits" section you would've learned that famed
composer Irving Berlin staged the two soldier shows
as depicted in the movie.

Yes, many of the skits and songs are terribly dated
and yes "This is the Army" is largely a propaganda
film, but Berlin singing his "Oh How I Hate to Get
Up in the Morning" was the lament of every draftee.

Virtually *every* film made during WWII was done
either as propaganda or to bolster the spirits on
the homefront.

I respectfully suggest watching it again, but instead
of looking at it with 2004 cynicism, look at it in the
context of the times. - Marlene Bomer from United States

CAREER GIRL(1944)

Not a bad movie, and really short! A talented
and aspiring singer goes to New York to make
her name on Broadway! Not having much luck,
she decides to go back to her hometown fience
but the girls that she boards with think she
has what it takes and chip in together to change
her mind. Hmm, what WILL happen!! B

From IMDb.com:

While there's no Ginger Rogers here (who appeared
in both of those films), there is a dancer who
emulates her in one sequence of this PRC musical.
It all surrounds a Kansas City singer (Frances
Langford) who moves into a hotel for women and
gains the support of most of the other residents
who spot her talent right off and pool their resources
to help her out. She's engaged to a boring businessman
in Kansas City but finds herself attracted to the
jilted suitor of one of the hotel's snootier
residents. Iris Adrian gets to show off both kitten
and cat like qualities as the tough broad with
the heart of gold who gathers everybody around
in Langford's defense but isn't afraid to break
a vase over another resident's head. Acting wise,
she is the winner in this group, while the lovely
Langford is musically brilliant if not a natural
actress. Still likable however, it makes sense
that she would usually be relegated to guest
appearances in musicals rather than starring
in them, although she did star in a few.

There's some witty exchanges between the ladies
of the hotel, and a nice bit concerning the hotel's
owner afraid of his hatchet faced wife, only seen
briefly with looks that only Mount Rushmore would
love. It is a rare treat to see these "Z" grade
musicals from PRC or Monogram that offer a bit
higher budgets and are a grade higher than their
campy horror films or mainly creaky westerns they
were famous for. So this hotel for women is definitely
worth an 80 minute visit. - mark.waltz from United States

Anyone growing up in the 50s & 60s know this
long running TV show! This is a story about how
they took it from radio to TV! Totally made up
story, several good comedy actors here, and
the idea for the story wan't bad! It's just
not a great movie! C

Sit back and enjoy this one. A story of two producers
that have been feuding for years. Both end up with
half the rights to a radio program "People Are Funny."
Along the way to getting the program on the radio you
get to hear some very good musical numbers by a variety

TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY(1946):

First off, this is an extremely long movie(2 hours
15 minutes!)!

This movie is loosely about the life of Jerome
Kern(mostly known for Showboat and Roberta!).
There are a lot of fictionalizationing going
on in this(such as the Sally Hessler character),
but all in all this is a fast moving movie,
with a ton of top notch stars(Frank Sinatra,
Judy Garland, Angela Lansbury, Lena Horne, Van
Hefflin, Dinah Shore & Robert Walker[as Kern])!

If you like musicals, this is quite good and
probably the best musical in the set!! A-

From another reviewer at IMDb:

This film has a cast of Giants of the Silver
Screen, Frank Sinatra looking like a baby face
who was American's Top Male Singer of the 1940's,
every young ladies heart throb! Robert Walker
(Jerome Kern) "Stranger's on A Train" '52 played
a great role as the composer of "Show Boat"
and many other great musicals. The cast of
June Allyson, Van Heflin and Lena Horne "Stormy
Weather" '40s and even Angela Lansbury, of "Murder
She Wrote" appeared in this great film. Vincenti
Minnelli, Judy Garland's husband at the time
made this a must see film for all generations
to enjoy. If you love good romantic music which
will live on forever and ever, see this wonderful
refreshing film which will warm your heart and
soul! - whpratt1 from United States

FABULOUS DORSEYS, THE(1947):

This relies heavily on Tommy and Jimmy carrying
the movie!! There are no other names here! On the
other hand, there doesn't need to be! This is truly
a great movie with a lot of information about two
of the greatest band leaders in the history of music! A+

From another reviewer at IMDb:

I would give "The Fabulous Dorseys" a 10 on the
basis of the music alone. If the acting by the
Dorsey Brothers does not exactly bowl you over,
at least it were the actual brothers portraying
themselves. The music is sublime, and if you like
the classic big-band sound, you will love the
music here. There are guest stars as well, chief
among them being Paul Whiteman, in one of his
rare film appearances. Lovely Helen O' Connell
is along to vocalize to some of the Dorsey
Brother's biggest hits. Based on the reviews
I have read about this film, I wouldn't bother,
but I have learned to listen to my own opinions
of certain films after viewing them. That is why
we have websites like this so we can share our
honest opinions of these films. - earlytalkie from United States

INSPECTOR GENERAL, THE(1949):

Some really great names in this one! Danny Kaye,
Elsa Lanchester, Alan Hale(Sr.) & Gene Lockhart star
in this romp in which most of the cast is related
to each other and corruption abounds!! The
inspector general has been given free hand to
clean up the country! Kaye plays a scam artist
who goes from town to town to sell his potions
that don't work! He becomes mistaken for the
IG!! C+

From another reviewer at IMDb:

An illiterate stooge in a traveling medicine show
wanders into a strange town and is picked up on a
vagrancy charge. The town's corrupt officials mistake
him for the inspector general whom they think is
traveling in disguise. Fearing he will discover
they've been pocketing tax money, they make several
bungled attempts to kill him.

Unfortunately, this film is in the public domain
and that means that Alpha Video seems to be the
primary supplier. Maybe another version exists,
but I saw the Alpha one. While it's not as bad
as many public domain films, it has clearly aged
and a new transfer would benefit the film greatly.

This film stands out as being a wonderful showcase
for Danny Kaye. His best-known films (like "White
Christmas") seem to have him more often as the
sidekick. This film proves he can be a leading
man in his own right, with plenty of humorous
acting and some incredible singing. Kaye should
be recognized as a bigger star than Bing
Crosby. - gavin6942 from United States

ROYAL WEDDING(1951):

This only suffers from the singing of Jane
Powell, for me anyway! I'm not a fan of high
pitched singing! However, take that out of the
equation and this is a pretty good movie, with
one of the most unique dance sequences ever! It
even rivals the great dance scene in Singing
In The Rain, "Make Them Laugh"!! A-

From another reviewer at IMDb:

It's hard to pick one of Fred Astaire's movies as
a favorite or as his best! But of course Royal Wedding
has to hit the top of the classics simply for the
famous "dance on the ceiling".

Jane Powell plays his sister and does a very nice
job, considering she and Fred never practiced any
dance routines together before shooting the film!
A must-see for Astaire fans, and if you're not a fan,
watch this film and you will be! - k_jasmine_99 from Nebraska

ROAD TO BALI(1953):

The boys get into trouble when they agree to
help a prince when he asks for deep sea divers
to help him dive for treasure! They meet Dorothy,
the prince's cousin, and of course they both
fall for her! Later on they wind up having to
rescue her and her kingdom!! Sadly this has
some really poor acting in it! Ansara and
Lamore both seem quite wooden! Of course
it may be just how they were being directed
to act! All things being equal, this is still
Hope and Crosby(along with Lamore, Martin &
Lewis & others)! Definitely one of the better
films in the set!! B+

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

Another journey with Bob, Bing, and Dotty, this time the
boys are escaping the law and a couple of shotgun wielding
fathers in Bing's case. They stowaway on a boat bound for
Rio De Janeiro and they meet damsel in distress Dotty with
her "aunt" Gale Sondergaard and her two henchmen Frank
Faylen and Joseph Vitale. Dragon lady Gale has been
hypnotizing Dottie to force her into a marriage so that
her inheritance can be swindled.

The Road pictures always had a usual pattern of songs.
A ballad for Crosby, a ballad for Lamour, and some patter
songs for Crosby and Hope. Crosby sings one of his nicest
ballads with But Beautiful. Hope and Crosby do Appalachicola,
Fla and Dottie does an unforgettable version of Experience
accompanied by Hope playing a bubble blowing trumpet.

Bing Crosby's most frequent singing partners were the
Andrews Sisters on record. They did enough material to
fill more than three of those old fashioned vinyl LPs. But
their only appearance in a movie with Bing is here and
they sing You Don't Have To Know The Language with
him as an extra treat.

See it and figure out for yourself what was in those
"papers" that the world was better off in blissful
ignorance of. - bkoganbing

PIED PIPER OF HAMELIN, THE(1957)

Oh boy, this is pretty bad! I'm not a fan of
this kind of production, rhyming just for the
sake of rhyming!! Not the worst of the movies
in this set, but way far away from the best! D-

From IMDb.com:

Overall it's a fun children's flick. The music is
good, the lyrics a bit desirous, but for kids - they're
fine. It's more of a cartoon-like presentation with
live actors. And hey, if you like Van Johnson, you
don't need anything more! He's good, but is he ever
bad? Just don't expect more than is really there.
It's not a modern production and it is geared toward
children more-so than adults, though adults can enjoy
it too if they don't try to take it too seriously.

The only real negative I have is that it is a bit long
for kids. The story drags a bit in the middle. The
beginning is fun, the ending is okay, but there is a
lull in the middle that makes it a little tough for a
child's attention span. - Scott Windsor from United States
