TCM FRED ASTAIRE AND GINGER ROGERS VOLUME 2

4 musicals by the great dance team of
Fred Astaire And Ginger Rogers!!

MUSICALS - FLYING DOWN TO RIO(1933)

LOL!! Ginger and Fred, not so much! Very minor
roles here, as it's all about Delores Del Rio and
Gene Raymond's characters! Halfway through the
movie and neither Fred nor Ginger has danced a
step! Finally at 44 minutes, a dance or two! As
for music, very sparse up until the 44 minute mark!
Not terrible, but not what I was expecting! C+

From IMDb.com:

So-so musical notable for being the first screen pairing
of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Unfortunately they
aren't the stars of this, just supporting players. The
stars are Gene Raymond and Dolores del Rio. Band leader
Gene falls for Dolores but she's already in an arranged
engagement. Not very interesting (the stars or the romance).
The support outshines the leads in this case, with Fred
and Ginger displaying their likable personalities and that
classic screen chemistry. Fred has a nice dance number and
Ginger gets to sing a tune early in the movie wearing a
dress with a plunging neckline that's pretty sexy stuff.
Later they have a fun dance number together to a song
called "The Carioca." That's one of two great numbers
in the film; the other being the climactic sequence with
girls dancing on airplane wings. See it for those two
numbers or for the Fred & Ginger scenes, which are always
fun. - utgard14 from USA

There are two shorts here: Beer And Pretzels &
"I like Mountain Music"! Neither one is phenominal,
and the second one is a cartoon!

MUSICALS - ROBERTA(1935)

This is a little better than the first, but
again the main stars are not Fred or Ginger!!
However, they both have a much larger role in
this than the first movie! And it's got some
first rate support! Not "Singing In The Rain"
but fun enough! B+

From IMDb.com:

Ginger Rogers has charm coming out of her ears in
'Roberta', as she always does, and the dance numbers
with her and Fred Astaire are typically mesmerising.

The film as a whole, however, is a tedious affair in
which the clear highlight of the movie (see above)
takes a back seat to Randolph Scott's bland turn and
Irene Dunne's truly unbearable, ear-piercing screech
of a singing voice. I don't know how I made it through
some of those numbers. Absolutely horrifying.

Just to be clear, then: any time Astaire gets on the
dance floor or Rogers does, well, anything at all,
the movie is delightful. It's a shame the film's
misplaced priorities mean there's far too little of
either of them. - mutty-mcflea from Lincolnshire, UK

MUSICALS - FOLLOW THE FLEET(1936)

Fred and Ginger finally top billed! The story
isn't anything new, the music is pretty good,
but you don't really watch these movies for
the incredible stories! It's the dancing here
that carries the movie! Pretty good, but the
ending was kinda abrupt! Still, worth a watch! B+

From IMDb.com:

About one hour and thirty minutes into "Follow
the Fleet", there's a musical sequence that
deserves attention: first Fred Astaire plays
"I'm Putting All My Eggs in One Basket" on the
piano, then he sings it, then Ginger Rogers
sings it, and finally, they dance to it, including
some comedic dance moves. It's a virtuoso display
of talent that sums up the film. The story is
not as important as their virtuosity.

The Music by Irving Berlin is one of the film's
main assets. It forms the melodic foundation
of the film.

This is fifth film pairing of Astaire and Rogers
and they are wonderful together, to the final
dance.

Not to be missed by those who like A&R or anyone
who enjoys musicals. Fred's vocals, which are
underrated I think, shine on some songs that are
difficult to sing. - atlasmb

MUSICALS - STORY OF VERNON AND IRENE CASTLE, THE(1939)

The last movie in the set! And the best! This
is an excellent movie! The only drawback being
that a few details were either changed or omitted!
But Fred and Ginger are what they were known
for, the perfect dancing couple! Well worth
many watches!! A

From IMDb.com:

The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle is the last
of the 9 RKO musicals Astaire did with Rogers.
However, from a story point-of-view, it is their
best film by a mile. The contest isn't even
close, IMO.

It's not their best musical. This film is really
a drama with a few musical interludes, whereas most
of the other Astaire-Rogers films were musical
comedies. Those other films had flimsy plots at
best and were saved only by their songs and dances.
BUT - "Vernon and Irene" could easily stands alone
without any songs or dances. It even has some action
sequences as is typical of war-time films (WWI, in
this case).

The film is a bio-pic about the Castles, who in their
heyday were even bigger than Astaire and Rogers. The
choreography is more attuned to 1910's sensibilities
than the usual Astaire and Rogers film, but that's
okay. Astaire and Rogers dance just well as always.

As the dancing duo's last RKO film, V&C is quite
classy and a fine close to a great RKO dancing career
for the two. - catmydogs from Maryland, USA
