PLANET OF THE APES LEGACY SET
The complete collection of the classic Planet
Of The Apes Movies! The set also includes a
"Behind The Planet Of The Apes" special disc
that is a two hour presentation on the making
of the whole saga!
PLANET OF THE APES(1968)
first one is actually one of the lesser entries
in the whole set! It did have the great Charlton
Heston as well as Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter,
along with James Whitmore and Linda Evens.
Pretty good make up, and the story line is fun!
This leads in to several follow up movies, as
well as a tv series. A pretty good start to the
franchise! B+
A review from IMDb.com:
This film, directed by Franklin J. Schaffner
("Patton"), is one of the most stylized films of
the late 1960's. "Planet of the Apes" - which
was based on the novel by Pierre Boulle - is
social commentary at it's best. The film's post
apocalyptic look is breathtaking, and Roddy
McDowall (Dr. Cornelius), Kim Hunter (Dr. Zira)
and Maurice Evans (Dr. Zaius) are the standouts
in this finely written tale by Michael Wilson and
"Twilight Zone's" Rod Sterling. The ending - which
is still considered one of the best twist endings
of all time - still doesn't disappoint. The film
spawned four sequels, novelizations, cartoons,
a TV series, as well as a nicely done remake by
Tim Burton. This is a must see for all film
purists. - moviedemon

A review from IMDb.com:
Very high quality sequel to the original. No, it
was not quite as good as the original but the
performances and the story were both strong.
Just watched it on DVD and forgot about how
creepy the underground mutant people were.
Especially when they were chanting to their "god".
James Franciscus gave a very good performance
and Linda Harrison is simply HOT! The ending was
a little too abrupt but the movie is well worth
seeing and owning on DVD. - kevin-167

A review from an IMDb.com customer:
No, this film is not as awe-inspiring as the original
but it still maintains the viewer's interest despite
the scaled down approach which was due to budget
constraints. For much of the film the there is a
humorous tone. Good performances were turned
in by familiar faces (Braeden, Montalban, Mineo).
The story, despite some holes, was quite riveting.
I'm looking forward to the fourth installment. The
sense of adventure and exploration (this time by
the apes) and the continued presentation of parallels
between this fictional world and our world still make
for worthwhile viewing. 7/10. - perfectbond

A review from IMDb.com:
Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes is actually a
good movie. One could argue that it's a case of
good writing in the face of a pathetically low
budget, ala Star Trek. The "future city" in the
film was actually a then-new business complex
in L.A., on the verge of completion. The producers
lucked out and got permission to shoot there.
This was good, because the studio had alloted
said producers a ridiculously low budget,
something like 1.7 million dollars, to make
the movie. The tiny budget especially shows
through in the special effects and the props:
check out the "authenticator", used to make
Ricardo Montalban's character tell the truth
to the goverment heavies, which looks like a
dining room hanging lamp with a blue bulb
inside. Money problems aside, Conquest Of
The Planet Of The Apes is still entertaining,
and makes some pointed observations about
real-life society in the process. Just overlook
the only-in-'72 turtlenecks, afros and push-button
phones with the cords removed. :-). - nycovom1

A review from IMDb.com:
Battle for the Planet of the Apes makes for a fantastic
conclusion to the Apes saga. The plot involves morality,
revenge and evil, and all this is handled pretty well by
director J Lee Thompson. Roddy McDowell establishes
himself as the ultimate Ape actor with this movie. His
performance as Ceaser this time around is more mellow,
but all the more enjoyable. The central plot revolves
around the ancient Ape theory that Ape should not kill
Ape, just as in real life worlds Humans should not kill
Human. McDowell handles the scenes withn the death
of his son at the hands of an evil Ape, who goes against
the theory, excellently. His portrayal of an anguished
Ceasar is a memorable and haunting one. Singer Paul
Williams turns up as a friend to Ceasar and the movie
contains excellent make-up, matte work and Battle
scenes. Battle for the Planet of the Apes would in
turn inspire the future Ape adventures in the medium
of television. The final shot of the statue of Ceasar
crying is well handled, memorable and hopefull. - Tom Bixby
