ROAD TO --- MOVIE SET PAGE:

The whole series of movies based on the very funny
Road To --- movies starring Bob Hope and Bing Crosby!!

The first four movies were released in a set called "The
Road Show Series"! The other three where all released
separately!

ROAD TO SINGAPORE(1940):

The first of seven Road To pictures starring Bing
Crosby and Bob Hope! This one is not what I would
call phenomenal, but it is fun, and worth watching
for the good, clean humor and the interesting music!

This disc also has a couple of specials on it, which include
insights from the great Phyllis Dillard! Another one is
about Bob's work with the USO! Very entertaining
indeed!!!! B

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

First "Road" movie for Hope & Crosby sees the duo
hiding out in Singapore trying to live a simple life,
away from women and responsibilities. Bing's running
from an engagement and job he doesn't want. Bob's
running from a shotgun wedding a girl's family is
trying to force him into. While in Singapore they
meet pretty Dorothy Lamour and run afoul of her
whip-wielding dance partner Anthony Quinn.

It's a good start for the series but not the best. As
they made more of the movies, they would become
wackier and funnier. This one is funny but focuses
a little too much on its plot. Some of you may read
that and wonder "What's so wrong with focusing on
plot?" Well, nothing usually, but a lot of comedies
work best when the comics are allowed to just be
crazy and irreverent. The plot to this is paper thin
anyway so it would have been better to just let the
boys run wild and ad lib, as they often did in the
later movies in the series. Still, this one is funny
and entertaining. Hope, Crosby, and Lamour were
all immensely likable personalities and it's hard to
watch any of their films without smiling. - utgard14

Cast Of Road To Singapore:

Bing Crosby ... Joshua 'Josh' Mallon V
Dorothy Lamour ... Mima
Bob Hope ... Ace Lannigan
Charles Coburn ... Joshua Mallon IV
Judith Barrett ... Gloria Wycott
Anthony Quinn ... Caesar
Jerry Colonna ... Achilles Bombanassa

ROAD TO ZANZIBAR(1941):

Better than the first(Road To Singapore), you can
tell the boys are getting more comfortable in their
roles together and the story and humor is much more
fun this time!

The extras in this are pretty much a repeat of the
first one on Singapore, plus the Command Performance
1944 which highlights some of Bob Hopes work again
for the USO!! This is really great fun, with Lana Turner
and the great Judy Garland! A

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

It's funny, but after seeing ROAD TO ZANZIBAR and
ROAD TO MOROCCO in the same night, I have a hard
time remembering any of the gags in ZANZIBAR. It's
not that it's a bad movie, it certainly isn't, but it also
isn't as refined and memorable as the next (3rd)
installment in the "Road" series.

Starting with this film, Hope and Crosby begin treating
each other a lot worse and this dog eat dog style of
humor worked well. A great example is when the
film begins we find that Crosby has convinced Hope
to become "Fearless Frazier"--a daredevil who is always
risking his life in a variety of schemes thought up by Crosby.

Although the film begins in the States, it somehow
manages to end up in Africa--with all the usual expected
cliches and fun. Not surprisingly, they find cannibals and
a gorilla (who is the usual "guy in a gorilla suit"--something
seen in practically every jungle picture of the era). And,
even less surprisingly, we find Dorothy Lamour (along
with her pal, played by screen veteran Una Merkel) in
Africa--falling for you-know-who! While none of this
is fantastic or inspired, the film is very pleasant and
fun. The only serious negative is that there are too
many songs, plus none are particularly memorable.
A decent follow-up to ROAD TO SINGAPORE, though
not one of the very best of the series. - planktonrules

ROAD TO MOROCCO(1942):

Again a fun romp with Hope and Crosby, singing and
joking around in Morocco, trying to win the girl(s) and
keep their heads in the process!

The extras are another repeat of the same one on the
first two discs, and the second one was another look
at Hope helping out the troops with his humor in
Command Performance of 1945! A

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

Another enjoyable 'Road Show! One of my Favorites.
Crosby and Hope are at their best in this one. Watch
for the scene where Hope mimics a starving beggar
in the street, its especially entertaining. No matter
what Hope tries in the 'Road Shows' he is always foiled,
with Crosby always the cool, smooth operator. Anthony
Quinn does a superb performance as the domineering
Sheik in this light hearted comedy, playing funny
scenes as a straight man. Dorothy Lamour as the
'damsel in distress' is as Lovely as ever.

Hope and Crosby are a delightful team, their playful
banter and comedic timing are on the money with
this one. This is a 'Must See' comedy! - ckattdance

George Givot ... Neb Jolla

ROAD TO UTOPIA(1946):

Another fun romp, this time in Alaska searching for gold!
Several cute jokes here, a lot at the expense of Paramount,
as well as making fun of being in a movie! It starts with the
trio talking about what happened many years back when they
first learned of the gold, flows into the movie, then at the
end cuts back to the trio again!

While I don't personally think this one is quite as good as
the last one, it's still got good humor! As with all of the
discs up to this point, there is the same special feature
as with the previous discs, along with a "short" called "Hollywood
Victory Caravan" with Bob, Bing, Humphrey Bogart, Betty
Hutton, Alan Ladd, Barbara Stanwyck, William Demarest
and others trying to sell Savings Bonds! Another interesting
look back at a different era!

The real highlight of this short is Carman Cavallaro's
rousing rendition of I Got Rhythm! B+

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

Oh this one is funny...haven't seen it since High school,
years and years ago, but I remember it well...the seen
where an aged couple-including Hope, talk about their
son-and then in comes Bing Crosby(!!)-where Hope sez
to the camera-'We adopted him!'...oh what a riot. And
' then there is the great scene where they are sledding,
and the Paramount stars pop up over a mtn in the
background...the constant lines about how, even when
they're in trouble, 'Paramount won't let anything happen
to us because we're under contract for another 4 pictures
or words to that effect...very funny stuff, Benchley's
narration a hoot too.

***, this one is funny and to my thinking the best of the
lot. - gazzo-2

ROAD TO RIO(1947):

THERE ARE NO SUBTITLES ON THIS DISC!!!!! BOOOOOOOO!!!

This is a pretty good movie, albeit not quite as humorous as
the previous four! A little more toward the serious side, though
not much! Still, fun galore and songs by the boys as well as
the Andrew Sisters!

Bob plays "Thanks For The Memories" on a trumpet at the
start of this movie! There are also several other songs that
have little portions of them in this!

The extras on this one has a text of Bob Hope's Biography!
All-in-all a pretty fun romp again, with some good supporting
cast members! B+

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

Another journey with Bob, Bing, and Dotty, this time the
boys are escaping the law and a couple of shotgun wielding
fathers in Bing's case. They stowaway on a boat bound for
Rio De Janeiro and they meet damsel in distress Dotty with
her "aunt" Gale Sondergaard and her two henchmen Frank
Faylen and Joseph Vitale. Dragon lady Gale has been
hypnotizing Dottie to force her into a marriage so that
her inheritance can be swindled.

The Road pictures always had a usual pattern of songs.
A ballad for Crosby, a ballad for Lamour, and some patter
songs for Crosby and Hope. Crosby sings one of his nicest
ballads with But Beautiful. Hope and Crosby do Appalachicola,
Fla and Dottie does an unforgettable version of Experience
accompanied by Hope playing a bubble blowing trumpet.

Bing Crosby's most frequent singing partners were the
Andrews Sisters on record. They did enough material to
fill more than three of those old fashioned vinyl LPs. But
their only appearance in a movie with Bing is here and
they sing You Don't Have To Know The Language with
him as an extra treat.

See it and figure out for yourself what was in those
"papers" that the world was better off in blissful
ignorance of. - bkoganbing

ROAD TO BALI(1952):

AGAIN, THERE ARE NO CLOSED CAPTIONS ON THIS!!!

This is actually quite fun!!! The boys of course are
again battling for the girl, and some of the songs
here are very nice!! And this one is in color!!

The cameos(and flashbacks) are a lot of fun(Bing's
brother Bob, Humphrey Bogart, Dean Martin and
Jerry Lewis!!), the girl in the flashback of Lala's past
does quite well in this! These alone are well worth
the price of the admission!! A

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

This movie introduced me to the entire "Road to"
series. This movie shows how movie chemistry never
dies. In their sixth film together, Bob Hope, Bing
Crosby, and Dorothy Lamour show the fun and
happiness of making films could be. They were
friends and the audience can surely see that. Being
the only movie in color makes the elaborate scenery
come to life. The jokes are similar to the earlier
films, but they are still funny. Do yourself a favor
and buy this movie, it's worth it. - bsjjcv

ROAD TO HONG KONG(1962):

The final entry to the wonderful Road To --- movies!
And this last entry has closed captioning!! YEAAAA!!!

While not as good as the last movie, this has some
fun to it! Plus it has a couple of pretty good supporting
actors/actresses: Joan Collins(the original Star Trek
episode "The City On The Edge Of Forever") and Robert
Morley(High Road To China!)! Dorothy Lamour has a
small part, and again there's the cameos by bigger
stars(Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra[Ocean's Eleven!])

Most of the songs are forgettable, and the humor, while
toned down considerably(I think the age issue for both
Bing and Bob caused a lack of pazzaz), there still
was enough to get a few laughs here and there!

There are unfortunately no extras on this disc :(!
Overall, probably the weakest of the entries, but
even as the weakest, it still had more to it than
most comedies made now a days!! B

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

I love The Road to Hong Kong. It's my favorite Road
picture. I don't know why so many people dislike it.
So Bing and Bob are older than they used to be.
Who isn't?

My favorite scene is the boys' Fly-It-Yourself scam.
The "native pilot" is a no-show (can't blame him) so,
of course, Bing bamboozles Bob into taking over
and nearly getting himself killed. I love the bit of
dialogue when Bing is helping Bob into his ridiculous
flying gear. It goes something like:

------------------------------------------------------------

Bob: Why do I always have to do the dangerous stuff?

Bing: It's the nature of the relationship. Just like
one of us is brawn and the other is flab.
Bob: Have you got a program? So far I don't recognize
anyone.

Bing: Well, don't get sore at me. It's just a plot point.

------------------------------------------------------------

I've always been a Bing Crosby fan, but I've never
thought he was particularly attractive. However, I
think he's really quite cute in his silly love scene
with Joan Collins. He could warble a love song
at me, anytime.

Although I enjoyed the earlier Road films, The
Road to Hong Kong is the only one I've bought on
DVD. It was that good. I've watched it umpteen
times and it always makes me laugh.

Oh, and yeah, and then there's Bob Hope's perfectly
timed line after Robert Morley delivers an impassioned
I'll-take-over-the-world-speech: "I think he rolls
his own." - (holdencomm@gmail.com)
