ROBERT RODRIGUEZ SET
The 3 Robert Rodriguez movies based on El Mariashi!
EL MARIACHI(1992)
First problem, this is in Spanish with subtitles, so you
have to read the movie instead of watch it!! BAD start!
Even with the problems and low budget, this actully had
a decent story! B-
From IMDb.com:
El Mariachi plays his guitar but is mistaken for a hit men.
Lot of thugs with guns keep trying to kill him. The story
isn't the big draw of this movie. It's really just an excuse
to shot a lot of guns and make an action movie. Robert Rodriguez
signals his arrival with this well shot indie. Sure the big
draw when it came out was the low low cost of production.
That didn't matter when it comes to the value of the camera
work. Even the most benign scenes are shot in an exciting
compelling way. It's a great sample of what Rodriguez would
do in Hollywood later on.
I recently watched it again after almost 20 years. I have
to admit that I don't remember the narration or the dubbing.
They sounded odd to me. It's very distracting. - SnoopyStyle

Basically more of the same from the first installment, El
Mariachi! Better actors, same script, better special effects
and the same humor! B-
From IMDb.com:
It's sort of a sequel to director Robert Rodriquez's low budget
indie "El Mariachi". Steve Buscemi comes into the bar and starts
telling the bartender (Cheech Marin) the story of El Mariachi
(Antonio Banderas) who tore up a bar to get info on Bucho
(Joaquim de Almeida). El Mariachi is seeking to avenge the
death of his love. Buscemi was actually telling a fake story
to help smoke out Bucho. El Mariachi goes shoot up the bar.
On the street, he gets shot in the arm. Carolina (Salma Hayek)
brings him back to her bookstore café. Navajas (Danny Trejo)
is the knife throwing maniac.
Rodriquez got a few more bucks to use in this wild gunfight
action. He got some bigger names non-amateur actors. It's
definitely flashier and more professional looking. The story
and dialog still needs work but that's not the point of this
franchise. The original has the joy of low budget indie discovery.
This one is generally better looking. - SnoopyStyle

try to help kill dudes is just plain wrong! C-
From IMDb.com:
I haven't seen the first two installments in Robert Rodriguez's
"El Mariachi" series, but now I think that I know the drill.
"Once Upon a Time in Mexico" portrays various and sundry characters
trying to take revenge on each other in the midst of a potential
revolution. Obviously, that's a loose description, but you can't
really understand this movie unless you see it. Granted, this
flick is not for the squeamish. Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek,
Johnny Depp, Mickey Rourke, Eva Mendes, Danny Trejo, Cheech
Marin, Ruben Blades, and Willem Dafoe all do quite well with
their roles - considering that every character exists mainly
for the purpose of shooting as many bullets as possible. Rodriguez
brings to this movie the same kind of flair for violence that
he more recently brought to "Sin City". - lee_eisenberg
