SCI-FI CREATURE CLASSICS

Four questionable horror movies!! There are no closed
captioning on these! And of course the special effects
are also questionable!

One of the biggest drawbacks of this set is that all
of the movies are on one disc!!

It Came From Beneath The Sea(1955)

Way too much talking and boring stuff! The "monster"
is done pretty well, but not even the great Eddie
Fisher can save this from the dulldrums! Course, the
Eddie Fisher here isn't the same great Eddie Fisher
of music fame! C+

A review from IMDb.com:

Ray Harryhausen's giant octopus is a stop-motion
MASTERPIECE!

An excellent film & story!

Trivia: The producer's budget wouldn't allow
the creation of an 8-tentacled octopus, so
it only has SIX legs (this isn't noticeable,
'cos u think the other two are under water!).

And, the City of San Francisco didn't want
the "landmark of their city", the Golden Gate
Bridge destroyed (even in miniature!), so the
cameras & crew had to be "smuggled" on the
actual bridge!

A MUST-SEE film from the 50's! - Norm-30

20 Million Miles To Earth(1957)

This stars William Hopper(Perry Mason's PI
Paul Drake in the TV show Perry Mason)! The
story: an Air Force space ship crashes back
to Earth after a trip to Venus with two of
it's passengers still alive(one barely) and
a strange creature in the process of hatching! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

This is a simple enough film. Rocket returning
from Venus crashes near Sicily and a foetal
thing grows to become a giant lizardy humanoid
type thing. The acting is ordinary and the
script predictable.

What makes it better than average for a 1950s
monster movie is the Ray Harryhausen animated
Venusian, called a Ymir here. Photographed in
atmospheric black and white, its progress from
small caged creature to being loose and dangerous
on the streets of Rome and fighting an elephant
is engrossing. You can't help rooting for the
Ymir, attacked along the way by dogs and soldiers.
The Ymir becomes a character like Frankenstein's
creation or the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Excellent work by Harryhausen, and far more
interesting than the CGI dinosaurs from Spielberg's
over praised (and underwhelming) Jurassic Park
trilogy. - henry-girling

Giant Claw, The(1957)

This one is pretty silly, at least the creature!
With no big name actors this relies on the
story to carry it, and while the creature is
really lame, the story and the acting aren't
bad! B-

A review from IMDb.com:

I'm really getting tired of people "dissing"
this film by apparently taking the attitude
that all films have to mimic "Citizen Kane"
in order to be worthy of enjoying! Sure,
the "science" in the film is decidedly
unscientific, and the monster DOES look
like Beaky Buzzard from a Warner Brothers'
cartoon, but, so what? The film is enjoyable
for what it IS: just a fun-to-watch, schlocky
"sci-fi" film of the fifties--with acting
that is NOT "amateurish" (as another reviewer
noted)--with the additional benefit (to us
guys, at least) of having one heck of a
sexy-looking heroine (Mara Corday).

Lighten up, and ENJOY. - MarshallO

Mothra(1961)
(AKA: Mosura)

This is truly a classic of Japanese monster
masterpieces!! Though not the best, it is
very entertaining and worth at least one
watch every now and then!! And I really
enjoyed the singing of the girls! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

This is a very unusual movie because the monster
isn't an evil killing machine as was the case
with Godzilla. The only reason for the destruction
is because of Mothra's uncontrollable urge to
rescue its priestesses. Mothra is what I call
part of the holy trio of the Toho monsters (the
other two being, of course, Godzilla and Rodan).
This is the first film in which the audience
actually roots for the monster and the true
monster is the villian, Clark Nelson. This
not only is a wonderful science fiction film
but a very humorous parody about the consequences
of over commercialization. - Sargebri
