SHERLOCK HOLMES: FREWER/WELSH COLLECTION PAGE

SHERLOCK HOLMES: FREWER/WELSH COLLECTION

This is the second release of these films, with the first
being a much poorer release with only 3 of the movies and
no closed captioning!! This set includes all four of the
Frewer/Welsh movies and DOES have closed captioning!!!

THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES(2000):

While not close to the perfection of the movie of
the same name starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel
Bruce, this does keep fairly close to the same
story line, with a few exceptions! Most notably
is the amount of sleuthing done by Dr. Watson!
Still, not a bad movie. B

A review from IMBd.com:

This is a fairly pleasant television movie, but
nothin spectacular either.

For those familiar with Sherlock Holmes and
this famous story, the ending is known from
the beginning. For those who haven't read
the book, the plot has some nice twists and
changes along the way, before coming to the
inevitable ending with Holmes saving the day.

If you like low budget murder mystery's give
this one a look, but don't expect a gripping
version of this story. - Mike (sutcal)

THE SIGN OF FOUR(2001)

As nearly all the reviewers on IMDb.com point out, there is
much more humor here than in all the other manifestations of
Sherlock Holmes' movies/TV episodes that I have had the
pleasure to watch! But to me that just makes this much more
interesting to watch! Not as great as Jeromy Brett's round
at this, but the story is basically identical!! A fun
watch!! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

A lightweight adaptation, but humorous and engaging.
Watson appears to enjoy anyone getting "one up" on Holmes,
an enjoyment viewed with cynicism by an irrate Matt Frewer.
The last half hour was engaging and illuminating. A worthy
effort. - doire

THE ROYAL SCANDAL(2001)

While still not of the caliber of the Rathbone/Bruce
Sherlock Holmes movies, this is a MUCH better
movie than the previous Frewer/Welsh movie,
"The Hound Of the Baskervilles"!! The ambiance
of the movie is well done, presenting 1891 very
well! The music is very good for setting the mood,
and the story is very engaging! A well done movie!
And the acting superb! B+

A review from IMDb.com:

Now, I just watched this movie and while it is
still one of the better SH movies I have watched,
I still give it only 9 out of 10 because (SPOILERS!
SPOILERS!) firstly Mycroft Holmes was so terribly
slim and good-looking (in contrary to the canon)
and secondly Cadogan West was actually the
criminal and thirdly they even dared to combine
the SCANDAL IN BOHEMIA and BRUCE-PARTINGTON!!
OK OK, I won't be too harsh. It's a great movie
and showed SH with a genuinely human side.
Without so much as saying it he actually fell
in love with Irene Adler who was a criminal
(which is also not according to the canon, I
might add), but who would Sherlock Holmes
be more likely to fall in love with anyway?
Watson was very cool IMHO. He was miles
and miles and miles away from Bruce's Watson
and that's saying a lot (I never liked Bruce
as Watson but Rathbone is the KING)! One
of the smaller things that struck me was
the incredibly fake looking "Baker Street"
sign towards the end of the film.

All in all it's a very cool SH movie (apart
from Mycroft!). I simply loved Matt Frewer
this time. - klingon-attack

Cast of The Royal Scandal:

Matt Frewer ... Sherlock Holmes
Kenneth Welsh ... Dr. John H. Watson
Liliana Komorowska ... Irene Adler

R.H. Thomson ... Mycroft Holmes
Robin Wilcock ... Crown Prince
Alain Goulem ... PC Trevor
Jacob Richmond ... Cadogan West
Kathleen McAuliffe ... Mrs. Hudson
Alan Legros ... Burly #1
Kevin Ryder ... Burly #2
Julian Casey ... Inspector Lestrade
Noel Burton ... Professor Morgan
David Francis ... Jenkins

THE CASE OF THE WHITECHAPEL VAMPIRE(2002):

Finally got to watch this all the way through
as the previous copy I had of this was damaged
and I couldn't watch it! Not the best of Holmes
movies, however, I would say that it is better
than some of the lesser Rathbone/Bruce Holmes
movies(the ones that put Holmes and Watson
in the second world war!)

I really enjoy Kenneth Welsh as Watson, and
Frewer does a fine job as Holmes! Still, though,
this is the lesser of the four movies here! Still
a fun movie to watch, though a little dark for
me! B-

A review from an Amazon.com customer:

The skeptical Sherlock Holmes (Matt Frewer)
and Dr. Watson (Kenneth Welsh) investigate
some deaths in the monastery of Whitechapel
attributed to a vampire. Sherlock Holmes
refuses to believe in any type of action from
the supernatural or any coincidence. As usual,
there is a very logical conclusion of the story.
This is the type of very verbalized movie,
basically with no action. The viewer feels
like being in a theater, with a stage on the
screen. Therefore, the running time could
be shorter. The viewer may also become
a tired, especially if he is not fluent in
English and needs to read the subtitles.
But it is a good plot and the mystery and
its resolution keep the attention along the
whole story. My vote is six. - Claudio Carvalho

Cast of The Case Of The Whitechapel Vampire:

Matt Frewer ... Sherlock Holmes
Kenneth Welsh ... Dr. Watson
Shawn Lawrence ... Brother Marstoke
Neville Edwards ... Dr. Chagas
Cary Lawrence ... Sister Helen

Jane Gilchrist ... Sister Mardaret
Michel Perron ... Inspector Attley Jones
Danny Blanco Hall ... Hector de la Rosa
Joel Miller ... Brother Caulder
Matthew Tiffin ... Brother John
Tom Rack ... Brother Abel
Norris Domingue ... Brother Sinclair
John Dunn-Hill ... Lamplighter
