The two serials from the 40s about the Green
Hornet! Both have been restored and the picture
and sound quality are very good!!
THE GREEN HORNET SERIALS(1940/1941)
THE GREEN HORNET(1940):
While this has a few issues, such as Kato being
referred to as "Korean", this still is a pretty decent
serial! Gordon Jones as the Green Hornet/Britt
Reid does a good job here! His partner, Keye Luke
is fun as Kato! Well worth watching, even though,
as with most serials, this is pretty predictable!! A
(The first story, The Green Hornet, includes two
Green Hornet radio programs, one from 1939 and
the other from 1940!! Very clear broadcast!)
If you're really paying attention here, you will notice
that each rendition of The Green Hornet(these serials,
the 1967 TV show, and the movie from 2011 with Seth
Rogan) are all from different comic companies!! This one
is the representation of the Harvey comics GH, the TV
show represents the Gold Key version, and the last movie
is now under Dynasty Comics!!
From IMDb.com:
"It's gone... like a spook! I've never seen a car
move so fast." The two police officers who are
constantly chasing the Green Hornet's car say
that in almost every episode. Britt Reid (the
Green Hornet) is a rich guy who like Bruce
Wayne (Batman) and Lamont Cranston (The
Shadow) has a secret identity that he uses
to fight crime.
This serial is a lot of fun and like most serials
ends each episode with an exciting cliff hanger.
It suffers from the defects typical of serials of
this era but also has the charm that is also typical
of them.
Those of us who remember the Abbott and
Costello Show will enjoy seeing Gordon Jones
as Britt Reid/The Green Hornet. He was Officer
Mike. Although Keye Luke (Kato) is no Bruce Lee
he plays the part well. Those who enjoyed David
Carradine as Caine in Kung Fu will enjoy seeing
how Master Po (the blind monk who called Caine
"grasshopper") looked as a young man.
Don't expect a sophisticated plot or deep character
development. The dialog is corny but there is plenty
of action and lots of fun. - gawlinskie

We have a new Green Hornet! Warren Hull stars
as the Green Hornet in this one, and while he
is adequate, he doesn't hold a candle to Gordon
Jones!!! Returning are Keye Luke, Anne Nagel
and Wade Boteler as Kato, Lenore Case and
Michael Axford! While they do a fine job in
their respective roles, it seems that their roles
have been toned down considerably, especially
in the case of Lenore! Still, fun to watch! B+
(As with the first show, this one also has two
radio broadcasts, one from 1941 and the other
from 1943!)
(This also has a biography of Keye Luke[pretty
interesting!], and a Green Hornet Trivia feature!)
From IMDb.com:
Despite some very impressive production values,
THE GREEN HORNET STRIKES AGAIN! is a bit of a
letdown when stacked up against the first serial.
While this may be due in part to the recasting of
The Hornet himself, it's also clearly due to some
of the writing: our hero is constantly being distracted
and slugged when he looks away from somebody
he's got covered; in fact, it happens so often in
this serial that it becomes a cliché by the last
reel. At one point, apparently shot during an
exchange of gunfire, he goes down- only to pop
up, unhurt, in the very next chapter. If he was,
in fact, "just playing possum," he certainly
picked an odd time to do so (right in the middle
of a pitched gun battle). These are the kinds
of little inconsistencies throughout that make
THE GREEN HORNET STRIKES AGAIN! a watchable
but ultimately fairly routine serial (though it's
certainly superior to THE SHADOW serial with
Victor Jory in the title role). - poe426
