DARK SHADOWS COLLECTION #04
Set 4 of Dark Shadows, after the introduction
of Barnabas!! There are no more clappers in this
which means that there's no more telling us what
episode number or date they are!
Sadly there are still no closed captions!!
EPISODE # 331: October 02, 1967:
Ok, about David and the bat!! Again, no one believes him!
Oh, well, poor David! Of course Roger runs right over to
Barnabas and tells him all about David! ALL about him!
You know, how no one but David finds Barnabas creepy is
beyond belief! But, of course, that's the way the story
is written!!! Barnabas immediately suggests that David
be sent away!!
Sarah gives David a toy soldier and tells him to never
lose it!! A-
EPISODE # 332: October 03, 1967:
David overhears Roger and the evil doctor talking about
Barnabas' idea about sending David away!! He is REALLY
pissed and decides that he is going to prove everything
he said was true! Only this time he's in big doggy-doo,
as he's caught, by Barnabas!!! A-
EPISODE # 333: October 04, 1967:
Dr. Woodard and Burke are suspicious of Barnabas, and
when David runs into them after seeing the coffin in
Barnabas' basement they feel their suspicions are
correct! Of course the bad doctor makes fun of him
and then in walks doubting Roger, and things go downhill
from there! And of course all the debate gave Barnabas
plenty of time to hide the evidence! A-
EPISODE # 334: October 05, 1967:
David is now on the defensive and decides to tell Burke
and Woodard about the secret room in the mausoleum! While
David is talking to Burke and the doctor Sarah lets David
know she's upset with himn!
The group goes to the mausoleum over Roger's ranting and
raving, and of couse Barnabas gets wind of what's happening
and, well, you know!!
This is the last episode with Robert Gerringer as the
good doctor Woodard!! A-
EPISODE # 335: October 06, 1967:
Another black and white episode!!!
Another change of characters! Dr. Woodard just isn't
himself! His character is only around for another few
episodes! I wonder if they just didn't think that
Peter Turgeon was a good replacement! Also on the
short list is Burke! His character is killed off
in only a few more episodes too!!
David talks with a psychiatrist and of course he doesn't
believe anything he says!! Elizabeth tells Burke that she
can't sell him the house that Vicky wanted!! Oh, and the
good doctor goes back to the mausoleum to try to get
into the secret room and meets up with - - - B+
EPISODE # 336: October 09, 1967:
Dr. Woodard meets up with Sarah at the tomb and she
shows him the secret room! Vicky tells Burke that they
can't be married because of David! Of course stupid
good doctor tells evil doctor about what he found ouT! B+
EPISODE # 337: October 10, 1967:
Dr. Woodard goes to the crypt and talks to the caretaker,
trying to find out more about the curse on the Collins'!
He goes and tells David what he's found out! Then, of course,
being that this is Dark Shadows, he goes and tells Barnabas!
Stupid doctor!! B+
EPISODE # 338: October 11, 1967:
Much discussion about Dr. Woodard and his investigation
into Barnabas!
Elizabeth offers for Burke and Vicky the west wing of
the house which excites them both! B+
EPISODE # 339: October 12, 1967:
We see Sarah Johnson for the first time in almost 100
episodes(exepting episode 266)!!
Huffy Roger tells Barnabas about Elizabeth's offer to
Burke and Vicky to stay at the house just to try to
get someone on his side!!
The good doctor goes to Collinwood and searches Julia's
room for her notes! Barnabas and Julia go to the big
house to get rid of the notes!! B+
EPISODE # 340: October 13, 1967:
Barnabas and the evil doctor discuss how to get rid of
Dr. Woodard!
Barnabas is trying to force Julia into killing
the good doctor by telling her how much pain he will
inflict upon Woodard! B+
EPISODE # 341: October 16, 1967:
Back to black and white!
Say goodnight Doctor! This is the last episode for Dr.
Woodard! He goes out with dignity!
Another new actor in an established role, Sheriff Patterson!
Quite a step down from Dana Elcar!!!!
Sam and the sheriff find the doctor dead, and Sam is
sure that he's been murdered!! B+
EPISODE # 342: Octobert 17, 1967:
All the talk about town is about the doctor's death!!
Absolutely terrible acting by Grayson Hall!!!! C
EPISODE # 343: October 18, 1967
This one's really boring, with almost nothing of notice
happening!! B-
EPISODE # 344: October 19, 1967
Another black and white episode!!
This is all about David and Burke! David has a visit
from Sarah and somehow he knows something forboding
is going to happen soon! Burke finally breaks down
and agrees that it might be good to stay at Collinwood
after he and Vicky get married! A pretty creepy episode!
And being in black and white enhances it!!
This is the final episode for the character Burke
Devlin!! A
EPISODE # 345: October 20, 1967
News of the plane crash that kills Burke reaches
Collinwood! Sad episode!! Of course this elates
Barnabas! And distresses the evil doctor!! B+
EPISODE # 346: October 23, 1967
So Vicky decides that she's going to remodle the west
wing and goes to the old house to tell Barnabas and to
see if he still wanted to help out! The evil doctor
gets quite upset about the whole thing and snaps at
Vicky! Barnabas finds out and gets really pissed off
at Julia, putting her in her place! And Vicky, she's
still off in lala land! B
EPISODE # 347: October 24, 1967
Strange(again, I know, I know) episode wherein the
treatments are working so well for Barnabas that he
decides it''s time to see a sunrise and invites Vicky
to join him!! Things don't go as planned!! B+
EPISODE # 348: October 25, 1967
David is concerned for Carolyn and gives her his toy
soldier! Sarah then comes to Carolyn! Not sure where
this one's headed!!
Julia tries to reverse the effects of her last potion
on Barnabas with disastrous results!! A-
EPISODE # 349: October 26, 1967
Barnabas is mildly peeved(LOL) at the doctor for the results
of the treatment!
Carolyn is becoming a believer and of course, like David,
no one believes her!! And then there's Vicky, and Barnabas
wants to make her his! B+
EPISODE # 350: October 27, 1967
Elizabeth still doesn't believe anything that David has
said, even with Carolyn's backing him up! She wants to
send him away because she thinks he's mentally ill!
Julia offers herself as a blood donar to Barnabas!
Finally, Carolyn goes to the old house to discover
the coffin! She of course gets caught by the evil
doctor and Barnabas who tells her "Don't be afraid,
I only want to eat your neck"(ok, not really, but
something along those lines!!)!!! B
EPISODE # 351: October 30, 1967
B & W again!
After Barnabas' meal, he reverts back to his old mean
self! It appears to me that they're thinking of offing
the character of Carolyn!! B
EPISODE # 352: October 31, 1967
Still B & W!!
Carolyn starts her sabotage of David! And also her
sabotage of Vicky!!
Julia hypnotizes Vicky a second time to get her to
resist Barnabas' advances!! B
EPISODE # 353: November 01, 1967
I have come to the conclusion there are no likeable
characters in Dark Shadows!!
EPISODE # 354: November 02, 1967
Joe talks with Carolyn and she tries to turn him away
from his curiosity about the hidden room in the Mausoleum
and that David is maybe not lying!! Joe talks with Vicky
and they discuss the strange way that Carolyn is acting!!
Barnabas offers to fund a search party for Burke, trying
to get on her good side! She's not having any of it!!
Carolyn plants the seed in Barnabas' mind about Julia's
tampering with Vicky!
I do not like the turn this series has taken and it is
entirely possible that I will not finish the full run! B
EPISODE # 355: November 03, 1967
Carolyn discovers Julia hypnotizing Vicky, and of course
runs to Barnabas with the info! While later that same night,
Barnabas insists that Carolyn goes to Collinwood to steal
Julia's book! B
EPISODE # 356: November 06, 1967
Julia hides the book in the grandfather clock and it
almost gets discovered, but an interuption keeps Carolyn
from finding it! Carolyn is very snippy to Hoffman and
Elizabeth insists that she appologize to her! B
EPISODE # 357: November 07, 1967
An attorney shows up at Collinwood and Julia talks him
into a ride into town, where she talks him into locking
the book away in his safe!! B+
EPISODE # 358: November 08, 1967
Barnabas is trying to drive Julia mad while Carolyn will
attempt to sweet talk the lawyer Peterson out of the book!! B
EPISODE # 359: November 09, 1967
After her visit by "Dr. Woodard", Dr. Hoffman starts going
off the deep end fast!!! B
EPISODE # 360: November 10, 1967
Julia decides that she needs to talk to Sarah and goes
on a hunt!! B+
EPISODE # 361: November 13, 1967
This is a terrible episode, with just the evil doctor trying
to carry the whole episode! D-
EPISODE # 362: November 14, 1967
Barnabas, satisfied that he's literally blown Julia's mind,
now sends Carolyn to the lawyers to get the book! B
EPISODE # 363: November 15, 1967
Julia goes to the lawyer to make sure her book is safe
and finds out that he took it from his office to his home!
She wants to see it, and he finds out his keys are missing!
Course we already knew that Carolyn stole the keys in the
previous episode! He goes back to his office to find Carolyn
in his office!!!
David comes home and runs into Sarah!! She then runs away
and interupts Barnabas' strangling Julia!!
In this we have a really dumb lawyer!! B+
EPISODE # 364: November 16, 1967
Sarah chastises Barnabas for being evil and says she
will never come back till he changes his ways! Elizabeth
tells Vicky that Burke is dead! And Sarah comes back
to warn David about impending doom for someone in the
house!! Julia tells Elizabeth and Vicky that David has
been telling the truth about everything!! B+
EPISODE # 365: November 17, 1967
Another seance!! Of course Roger is his huffy self! And
Carolyn is being her new hissy self!! And Barnabas wants
anything but a seance!! Carolyn fakes like she's Sarah
but Sarah takes over Vicky's body and sets things right! B
EPISODE # 366: November 20, 1967
We now switch gears to 1795!! Vicky is wisked away to
the past much to the concern of all involved! This focuses
on Vicky, but what's happening back at Collinwood?? B+
EPISODE # 367: November 21, 1967
Seeing all of the people she knows as different people
is quite confusing to Vicky who has still not quite
grasped what's happened to her!! Vicky has a bigger
problem now in that the bad doctor(the former Mrs.
Johnson) now thinks that Vicky's possessed by the
devil!! With every character she runs into it gets
more and more confusing for her, as now she's met
Jeremiah Collins(the former Burke Devlin)! B+
EPISODE # 368/9: November 22, 1967
Back to black and white again!!
Barnabas is concerned about his fiance arriving safely
and Vicky tells him that she will arrive safely! Oooops!!
This brings more suspicion about her being a witch!!
Louis Edmonds plays his part(Joshua Collins) to the
hilt! Not really enamored with anyone in this alternate
time line!!
It appears that good old Barnabas has put himself in
a sticky situation between two women - Angelique and
Josette! B+
EPISODE # 370: November 24, 1967
Angelique is determined that if she can't have Barnabas
no one can!!!! B+
EPISODE # 371: November 27, 1967
Angelique has a sudden change of heart as she actually
watches Barnabas dying!
This story line is full of overacting!! LOL!! But that
just makes it all the more fun!!! A-

From a reviewer at IMDb.com:
Like many people I used to rush home from grammar
school to see this Gothic soap opera. I distinctly
remember being petrified of the werewolf and running
out of the room when Barnabas bit somebody.
Seeing it now it's still sort of creepy. It moves
very slow (of course) and the black & white seasons
are extremely dull with really pathetic special
effects and threadbare settings. But when the
series switched to color and started to really
be popular (in 1967) it really got going. The
special effects improved, the settings and
costumes got more elaborate and the plot lines
went barreling out of control. Also they had
a good cast who played all their roles seriously.
That's good, because if they had camped it up
or winked at the audience it would have fallen
apart.
A good, fun horror soap. It's a good thing
it's available on video and DVD now. - preppy-3
