DARK SHADOWS COLLECTION #5

Set 5 of Dark Shadows, continuing on in 1795 about
Barnabas(the only character besides Vicky to keep
their name), Joshua(Roger), Jeremiah(Burke), Millicent
(Carolyn) etc.!

Sadly there are still no closed captions!!

EPISODE # 372: November 28, 1967:

So Ben Stokes(the doppleganger of Matthew Morgan) shows
up in this 1795 era also, and he's also strange just as
in the present(before he died)! Angelique uses him as a
tool for evil!!

It's interesting that they brought back so many of the
cast, both past and present, and chose to have a brand
new person to the show as the evil witch here!!! A-

EPISODE # 373: November 29, 1967:

Angelique has a new target for her plans to get Barnabas,
Jeremiah!! She plans to make Jeremiah fall in love with
Josette! A-

EPISODE # 374: November 30, 1967:

Angelique has cast a spell on Ben making it he can't talk
if he tries to tell of what she's doing!! Josette throws
herself at Jeremiah and he tries to resist! Evil woman this
Angelique!! A-

EPISODE # 375: December 01, 1967:

Jeremiah decides he must tell Barnabas about Josette! Angelique
makes Ben take a drink to Jeremiah!! A-

EPISODE # 376: December 04, 1967:

Natalie sees Jeremiah and Josette kissing! She gives Naomi
a terrot reading and sees that Josette and Barnabas aren't
going to marry! She thinks that the evil in the house may
be Vicky!! An absolutely hillarious ending!!!! A-

EPISODE # 377: December 05, 1967:

As of yet there's no sign of what's happening back in the
present!

Deeper shit for Jeremiah and Josette!! Seems like Burke/
Jeremiah can't catch a break in any century!! B

EPISODE # 378: December 06, 1967:

Angelique calls on Ben again to get Jeremiah to stay home
instead of going on a trip! B

EPISODE # 379: December 07, 1967:

Angelique decides if she can't stop Jeremiah to do her
bidding, she'll just have to go about things another
way!! So, she sets her new target on Joshua Collins!!
She decides to turn him into a - - -

Cat! And still there's suspicion that Vicky Winter is
a witch!!! B+

EPISODE # 380: December 08, 1967:

Natalie insists that Josette and Barnabas get married
immediately! She goes to Josette to tell her and insists
that Angelique stay in the room with them! Smart, eh?!!

So during the wedding, Josette runs off and - - - - B

EPISODE # 381: December 11, 1967:

Barnabas goes out to find Josette, and finds her veil!
Angelique has left no stone unturned!!! B+

EPISODE # 382: December 12, 1967:

The women(Natalie & Abigail) are on a witch hunt and
Vicky's their target! The spell on Joshua wears off and
he is demanding answers about what's been happening! Poor
Vicky!! B

EPISODE # 383: December 13, 1967:

So we find Jerimiah and Josette are at the Blue Whale
celebrating their wedding!! "Barnabas" appears to Josette
and it appears to snap her out of the spell! She insists
that they go back to Collinwood to face the music!

Then the men get together to set things right! Very bad
acting on their parts!! Burke, I mean Jerimiah, goes
to try to set things right, but Josette is having
second thoughts!

After all is said and done, Barnabas challenges Jerimiah
to a duel!! B

EPISODE # 384: December 14, 1967:

So everyone is against the duel and trying to talk the
two into calling it off!

Barnabas wins the battle but loses the war! B

EPISODE # 385: December 15, 1967:

More on the witch hunt! And the reverend show up to
exocise the witch, even though he's not really a
minister!! Vicky, of course, is her still stupid
self!!

I really hate this episode!!! F

EPISODE # 386: December 18, 1967

Barnabas and Nathan go out to the woods to find Vicky,
and Angelique is right there! She destroys the tree after
the boys take Vicky to a new hideout, the new mansion! This
gives Trask, the faux preacher, ammunition!! B

EPISODE # 387: December 19, 1967

The EP is now sure of a whole coven of witches and is
determined to eek them all out!!

Of course Angelique knows where Vicky is and runs to
tell the evil "preacher"!

I REALLY HATE the turn that this show has taken and am
sure that at this point I will not buy any more of the
sets(I have already bought through set 7)! F

EPISODE # 388: December 20, 1967

Angelique is pressing Barnabas to believe that Vicky
is a witch and behind all the evil in this time period!
She finally breaks his spirit as far as seeing her as a
love interest!!

The EP is after just about anyone to show he's the all
powerful man of God! He goes after Josette, saying he
needs to perform an exocism on her, only to be interrupted
by Barnabas! It's sad to think that this kind of thing
actually happened in the past! F

EPISODE # 389: December 21, 1967

Angelique, pissed at Barnabas, decides to attack the
weakest link in this whole series, Sarah! She makes her
fall ill by using voodoo on her, and makes Barnabas promise
to marry her to make Sarah well! A very evil turn!

Ben knows who's behnd the whole thing and says that
Angelique has gone too far this time and swears to
kill her if she doesn't make Sarah better!

Vicky comes back to see Sarah!! F

EPISODE # 390/391: December 22, 1967

Josette's father, Andre, asks Barnabas to go to her
and tell her that she's not to blame for what happened
to Jeremiah! Angelique is furious again at Barnabas
that he doesn't want to marry her!!!

Jeremiah's ghost comes to Josette's room!! C

EPISODE # 392: December 26, 1967

Barnabas tries to console Josette! Josette thinks that
Jeremiah is still alive and goes to his grave to see
him!! B

EPISODE # 393: December 27, 1967

Josette & Naomi recount their experience at the grave
to her father and to Joshua! Of course they think the
two are nuts!

The ghost of Joshua appeaars to Josette in her room!
Angelique is left alone in Josette's room, baaaaad
idea!!! She tells Josette about the impending marriage!
The family is totally against this marriage and tries
to stop it!

While moving into the new house, they find a door
locked and sounnds(Joshua?) coming from the other
side! B

EPISODE # 394: December 28, 1967

It appears that Joshua is pissed off about the way
things have gone and his ghost tears up the room the
room that he was supposed to take in the new room!!

For once Angelique is on the hot seat from Abigail!

Angelique makes the ghost go to Barnabas to stop him
from going back to Josette!! B

EPISODE # 395: December 29, 1967

Angelique does her bewitching on Barnabas to make him
want to get married immediately, of which Joshua says
that if he marries so soon he will cut him off! A very
testerone filled episode!! B

EPISODE # 396: January 01, 1968

More drama about Barnabas and Angelique: Joshua kicks them
out of the house and Naomi gives them the old house! Seem
things are going great for Angelique, but things don't go
swimmingly for her!! A

EPISODE # 397: January 02, 1968

Trask is back in the story, which means it's going downhill
from here on!! Vicky goes to stay with Barnabas in the old
house, one of the worst moves in the story so far! Vicky
tells Barnabas about coming from the future!! That gets
him wondering if she isn't a witch!!

Lastly, Jeremiah comes for Angelique and drags her off
to the graveyard!! B+

EPISODE # 398: January 03, 1968

Angelique calls to Ben to come and help her! Which of
course he does!! Dumb Ben!! Ben gets a kick out of the
fact that Jeremiah carried her to his grave!!

And so they are married! Sad show! C+

EPISODE # 399: January 04, 1968

Angelique is being haunted by Jeremiah, and Vicky is
being haunted by Angelique! Angelique, even though she
has gotten all she wanted, turns not only on Vicky, but
on Barnabas also!!

Angelique sends Ben over to do her dirty work at the
new house by getting a ribbon from Abigail's room,
but things don't go smoothly for the man!

Angelique fools Sarah into coming to the old house to
see Vicky! Poor Sarah gets caught in the middle, and a
befuddled Barnabas gets caught also unprepared! Clairice
Balckburn(Abigail) really plays her part to the hilt!
A very disturbing episode, to say the least!! C-

EPISODE # 400: January 05, 1968

More on Angelique making life Hell for Vicky! The EP
is back for his stupidness!! Again, I really hate this
story line! F

EPISODE # 401: January 08, 1968

Another job for overacting!! LOL!! Vicky's in jail,
Barnabas goes to the cellar at the new house to talk
with Ben to try to get out of him the name of the
witch! He, of course refuses and knocks Barnabas
out and escapes!!

Barny now suspects Angelique!! C+

EPISODE # 402: January 09, 1968

Now armed with the real name of the witch, through
Ben's writing, Barnabas vows to try to find a way
to stop her!! He tries to off her twice to no avail! B+

EPISODE # 403 January 10, 1968

Barnabas confronts Angelique and he gets the worst of
it! He tries to go see Josette but gets blocked by
Natalie! He asks Millicent to ask Josette to meet him
in the garden the next day! B

EPISODE # 404: January 11, 1968

Nancy Barrett really plays her part of Millicent with gusto!
Anyway, Barnabas gets a barrister to help Vicky, but
she's not very smart here!! After Millicent talks Josette
into going for a walk, they "run into" Barnabas along the
way and he tries to talk her into leaving Collinwood! B

EPISODE # 405: January 12, 1968

Barnabas talks Josette into leaving! She tells Natalie
who tries to talk her out of it! She can't so says that
she will accompany her out of town! The busibody Abigaail
runs over to the old house to tell Angelique that Josette
is gone! Of course Angelique handles it like a trooper!!

And the part of the bat played by Bill Baird!!! LOL! B

EPISODE # 406: January 15, 1968

With Angelique "dead", Barnabas begins his journey to
vampiredom! Turns out Josette has the same issue! Turns
the Angel was not killed, and she's Hell bent on revenge
on absolutely everyone! Ben tries to help Barnabas, and
Natalie is confounded by her terrot cards! B

EPISODE # 407: January 16, 1968

Angelique actually tries to help Barnabas, but it doesn't
work and he is now a full fledged Vampire! Josette and
Natalie go to the old house to find Barnabas almost dead
but really already gone!! B

EPISODE # 408: January 17, 1968

Angelique tries to pass off Barnabas' problem on the
plague!! Josette is pretty stupid here(duh)! Actually,
all the women here are stupid, or evil! Vicky tells
Josette about the family book that she brought with her
from the future!!

Vicky tells Josette about the Collins family book
that she brought with her from the future! B-

EPISODE # 409: January 18, 1968

Many of the things in the Collin's family book aren't
quite correct! Joshua decides to cover up the death of
Barnabas(explaining the incorrect information in the
book)! Barnabas promisses to come back for Josette
after his death!! After he passes Natalie and Naomi
see a bat that suddenly appears! A-

EPISODE # 410: January 19, 1968

How this story line continues on for another 50+ episodes
is beyond me!!

Angelique calls to Ben to come and help her! He does
her bidding, but when they go to the mausoleum, Ben
shuts her in!! A-

EPISODE # 411: January 22, 1968

Barny comes back as, of course, a vampire! His first target,
appropriately, Angelique!!! But is she really dead? Hmmmm,
probably not! B+

EPISODE # 412: January 23, 1968

Focus switches back to Victoria! And the book! And
the EP! Oh, and the stupid Josette!!!! Peter is the
only likable character in this episode!! Vicky goes
to Collinwood to try to get the book, but of course
gets caught!! F

From a reviewer at IMDb.com:

Like many people I used to rush home from grammar
school to see this Gothic soap opera. I distinctly
remember being petrified of the werewolf and running
out of the room when Barnabas bit somebody.

Seeing it now it's still sort of creepy. It moves
very slow (of course) and the black & white seasons
are extremely dull with really pathetic special
effects and threadbare settings. But when the
series switched to color and started to really
be popular (in 1967) it really got going. The
special effects improved, the settings and
costumes got more elaborate and the plot lines
went barreling out of control. Also they had
a good cast who played all their roles seriously.
That's good, because if they had camped it up
or winked at the audience it would have fallen
apart.

A good, fun horror soap. It's a good thing
it's available on video and DVD now. - preppy-3
