SHERLOCK HOLMES GRANADA TELEVISION SERIES(1986) - SERIES 2 - THE RETURN OF
The greatest criminal investigator from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
back on TV!! Starring Jeremy Brett as Sherlock and David Burke/
Edward Hardwicke as Watson, this is the complete collection of all
the episodes including the two TV movies, The Hound Of The
Baskerville and The Sign Of Four!
EPISODE 1: THE EMPTY HOUSE(July 09, 1986):
David Burke is no longer with the series as Watson! We have here now
Edward Hardwicke as the ever faithful Watson! We'll see if this is a
good thing or not!
Anyway, as to the story: obviously Holmes is alive and well and living,
well, all over the place! He's come back to help find out how/who/why/
and what of the murder that Watson had been researching! He is also
positive that one of Moriarty's cohorts will be gunning for him!!
Inspector Lestrade returns here! A-
EPISODE 2: THE PRIORY SCHOOL(July 16, 1986):
(The third episode on disc 5!)
A Duke's son disappears from the school that he is
bordered at! A
EPISODE 3: THE SECOND STAIN(July 23, 1986):
(The first episode on disc 5)
A man is killed in a nearby castle, complete with moat and all!! Seems
pretty cut and dried, as there was no way into the house as the gate
was up which meant that the moat was full!! A
EPISODE # 4: THE MUSGRAVE RITUAL(July 30, 1986):
(This one is the fourth episode on disc 4!)
Holmes and co. go on a treasure hunt, but know not what they're
on the hunt for! This, of course, leads to murder, but not till
close to the end!! B+
EPISODE # 5: THE ABBEY GRANGE(Aug. 06, 1986):
(This is actually the thrd episode on the fourth disc of the set!!)
A man killed and a woman tied up in a chair to do nothing but
watch the happenings! It looks like a simple robery gone bad,
but then Holmes gets involved and meanders his way to the truth!
Rather slow this one, but still a good watch to the end! A-
EPISODE # 6: THE MAN WITH THE TWISTED LIP(Aug. 13, 1986):
A woman comes to Watson(yup, Watson) and tells him of her
husband's iniscretion(opium) and that he's been gone for
over 48 hours! He goes to an opium den to find him, and he
finds a missing Holmes along with the husband! And then off
they go to solve a the disappearance of a husband(a different
one!!)!! A
EPISODE # 7: THE SIX NAPOLEONS(Aug. 20, 1986):
Ok, the first 6 minutes of this is all in Italian! Not
sub-titled or nothing! NOT COOL!!
Someone's going around killing Napoleon!!! Ok, his busts
anyway! Someone is breaking into people's homes/businesses
and destroying busts of Napoleon! Not a common hapenning,
and as such it piques Holmes' curiosity! Especially when
someone winds up dead!!
Lastade returns here! A
EPISODE # 8: THE DEVIL'S FOOT(Apr. 06, 1988):
A woman dies and two men, her brothers, appear to be in some drug
induced delirium! Holmes and Watson just happen to be in the area
for some rest and relaxation! Of course, no rest is gotten! A
EPISODE # 9: SILVER BLAZE(Apr. 13, 1988):
Silver Blaze is a race horse! He has gone missing and they
have called upon Holmes to help!
Other than the original story by Doyle, this was first a short
both in 1912 & 1923 and then made in 1937 starring Arthur Wontner
which I found quite delightful! A
EPISODE # 10: WESTERIA LODGE(Apr. 20, 1988):
A man who has been staying at a lodge(betcha can't guess which
one) wakes up one morining to find everyone gone! It is later
shown that one of the people there has been murdered, and he
winds up being the main suspect! A
EPISODE # 11: THE BRUCE PARTINGTON PLANS(Apr. 27, 1988):
Mycroft returns!
This is about a highly advanced submarine and the plans there-in
stolen, and the holder murdered! A
From a reviewer at IMDb.com:
This series was indeed the best I've seen for accuracy to Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes character and novels. The
settings are superb, the plots are true and Jeremy Brett is
excellent as Holmes.
It is well worth your while to see this and other Holmes series
(Return of Sherlock Holmes, Memoirs ... etc). - nodak-2
