SHERLOCK HOLMES GRANADA TELEVISION SERIES(1991) - SERIES 3 - THE CASEBOOK OF
The greatest criminal investigator from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
back on TV!! Starring Jeremy Brett as Sherlock and David Burke/
Edward Hardwicke as Watson, this is the complete collection of all
the episodes including the two TV movies, The Hound Of The
Baskerville and The Sign Of Four!
The Brits don't call their yearly segments seasons, they call them
series! Don't know why!! They then devide the series into seasons!
Go figure!! LOL!
You can tell as this "series" continues that Jeremy Brett is quite
ill! Sadly, he passed away in 1995!
Season 1:
EPISODE 1: THE DISAPPEARANCE OF LADY FRANCES CARFAX(Feb. 21, 1991):
Dr. Watson goes on a holiday and runs into a Lady Carfax! She's a
hardheaded woman who has her own ideas on what is best for her!
It appears to Watson that she has diappeared after taking to the
lake and Watson implores Holmes to come and piece it all together! A-
THE SECOND "EPISODE" ON DISC 7: THE SIGN OF FOUR(1987):
This is a movie that was shown before Series 3!!
A woman comes to Holmes to try to find out what happened to her
father who has disappeared! She's been getting a pearl sent to
her one a year since his disappearance ten years prior! This leads
our intrepid duo to a house owned by twin brothers who only wind
up adding to the mystery!! Very fun story and movie! A
THE FIRST "EPISODE" ON DISC 8: THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES(1988):
This is a movie that was shown before Series 3!!
A story that's been told several times: 1939 with the great Basil
Rathbone and Nigel Bruce; 2000 with Matt Frewer & Kenneth Welsh;
1959 with Peter Cushing and Andre Morell(with Christopher Lee!);
2002 Richard Roxburgh & Ian Hart; 1978 with Peter Cook & Dudley
Moore and many more!!!
The story is pretty well known: A man inherits an estate and he's
been warned not to take it over, as there is a histoy of attacks
on the owners by a huge hound1 A
EPISODE 2: THE THE PROBLEM OF THOR BRIDGE(Feb. 28, 1991):
A rich and demanding man's wife is killed and all evidence points
to a governess! The man goes to Holmes and Watson for answers, which
they think poinst to the man! A
EPISODE 3: SHOSCOMBE OLD PLACE(Mar. 07, 1991):
(The second episode on disc 9)
A man is in dept up to his ears and has everything he has on
a horse to win the big race!! A man who runs his stables suddenly
goes missing! Holmes is brought in to try to solve the whole thing!
Oh, and the whole place belongs to the man's sister! A
EPISODE # 4: THE BOSCOMBE VALLEY MYSTERY(Mar. 14, 1991):
(This one is the third episode on disc 8!)
Holmes gets called to the aid of a young man accused of killing
his father! This is a great episode!!! A
EPISODE # 5: THE ILLUSTRIOUS CLIENT(Mar. 21, 1991):
(This is actually the first episode on the nineth disc of the set!!)
A general's daughter has been swept off her feet by a no good
schemer! The schemer knows that Holmes and Watson are called
upon to stop the whole sordid mess! And he has also laid all his
cards on the table to the young lady, twisting the truth to make
him out to be the hero! Holmes has been called upon to help out
by a high ranking person who is not divulged!! A-
EPISODE # 6: THE CREEPING MAN(Mar. 25, 1991):
(This episode is on disc 11!! Way out of order!)
A woman, the daughter of a professor, is awaken at night by something/
someone at her window! She askes her betrothed to go to Sherlock for
his help, but then he tries to back out! The professor is quite
adamant that there's nothing going on, which only spurs Holmes on
even more!
Another Lestrade sighting!! A
Season 2:
EPISODE # 7: THE MASTER BLACKMAILER(May 06, 1993):
(This is the third episode on disc 9)
This is a movie, not just an episode!
Lestrade shows up again!
The main thrust is that Holmes gets involved with a blackmailer! A
Season 3:
EPISODE # 8: THE LAST VAMPYRE(Jan. 27, 1994):
Another movie length episode!
Take one overbearing jealous boy, a very irritating baby's
incessant crying, and some really wierd people, and you get
this! Oh, and did I metion the vampire??!!
I'm giving this two different ratings:
as a Sherlock Holmes show - B
as a Hammer Film(which it isn't) A+
EPISODE # 9: THE ELEGIBLE BACHELOR(Feb. 10, 1994):
And yet another movie!
Many flashbacks to the scene where Moriarty "dies"!
What a depressing episode!! The basic story is that a lord
marries a young woman and she disappears shortly after the
weddomg! The Lord has a talent for collecting women and there's
one in particular that is causing quite a rukas! Meanwhile,
Holmes appears to be having a nervous breakdown! A-
From a reviewer at IMDb.com:
This series was indeed the best I've seen for accuracy to Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes character and novels. The
settings are superb, the plots are true and Jeremy Brett is
excellent as Holmes.
It is well worth your while to see this and other Holmes series
(Return of Sherlock Holmes, Memoirs ... etc). - nodak-2
