STAR TREK - DEEP SPACE NINE SEASON 1(1993)
The follow-up series to The Next Generation, this
is all about a large ensamble on a space station
deep in space!! Having many similarities to Babylon
5, this has many people from many species all trying
to live together in harmony - ok, so maybe not all
of them are!! But the main factions here are Humans,
Bajorans, Cardassians, Ferengi & Trills! And there's
a major dislike between the Bjorans and Cardassians!!
This first season stars Avery Brooks as Commander
Benjamin Sisko, Nana Visitor as Major Kira Nerys,
Terry Farrell as Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax, Rene
Auberjonois as Odo, Colm Meaney as Chief Miles
O'Brien, Rosalind Cho as Keiko O'Brien, Hana Hatae
as Molly O'Brien, Cirroc Lofton as Jake Sisko, Armin
Shimmerman as Quark, Siddig El Fadil as Dr. Julian
Bashir, Mark Allen Shapherd as Morn, Andrew Robinson
as Garak, Mark Grodenchik as Rom, Aaron Eisenberg
as Nog, Mark Alaimo as Gul Dukat, Louise Fletcher
as Vedek/Kai Winn & Philip Anglim as Vedek Bereil!!
As I said, a very large ensemble!!! Most of these
characters last throughout the series, with a very
few exceptions!
EPISODE 1: EMISSARY(Jan. 3, 1993):
In this, the first episode aired, this is mostly
about Sisko showing up on DS9, his hatred for
Jean Luc Picard, and his destiny concerning Bajor!!
This has the only appearance of said Captain Picard!!
This first aired episode has, in order of appearance: Commander
Benjamin Sisko, Jake Sisko, Chief Miles O'Brien, Major Kira
Nerys, Security Chief Odo, Nog, Quark, Morn, Dr. Julian Bashir,
Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax & Gul Dukat! B+
EPISODE 2: PAST PROLOGUE(Jan. 10, 1993):
A Bajoran freedom fighter is being pursued by a Cardassian
ship and he requests assylum on DS9!!
The Klingon sisters Lursa and B'Tor, make their appearance
on DS9!!
This episode has, in order of appearance: Garak, Dr. Bashir,
Chief O'Brien, Commander Sisko, Lt. Commander Dax, Major
Kira & Security Chief Odo!! A-
EPISODE 3: A MAN ALONE(Jan. 17, 1993):
A man comes aboard DS9 whom Odo has a real problem
with!! Said man winds up dead and the most likely
suspect is Odo!! On the side Keiko is having trouble
adapting to life on the space station, and Jake and
Nog are up to mischieveousness!!
This episode has, in order of appearance: Lt. Commander
Dax, Dr. Bashir, Commander Sisko, Security Chief Odo,
Quark, Chief O'Brien, Keiko O'Brien, Major Kira,
Jake Sisko, Nog, Rom, Morn & Molly!! A-
EPISODE 4: BABEL(Jan. 24, 1993):
It appears that the Cardassians left behind several
little "gifts" when they vacated the station!! Things
start going wrong and Chief O'Brien has his hands full
with repairs, and ends up a little crazy!! Soon, the
whole ship is loosing it!!
This episode has, in order of appearance: Chief O'Brien,
Lt. Commander Dax, Major Kira, Commander Sisko, Quark,
Dr. Bashir, Morn, Odo & Jake! A
EPISODE 5: CAPTIVE PURSUIT(Jan. 31, 1993):
A ship in trouble is helped by O'Brien! Turns out
to be the first ship through the wormhole, and the
inhabitant doesn't really want help!! They become
friends, but it turns out that he's a fox in a hunt!!
This episode has, in order of appearance: Commander Sisko,
Major Kira, Lt. Commander Dax, Chief O'Brien, Quark,
Morn & Dr. Bashir! A
EPISODE 6: Q-LESS(Feb. 7, 1993):
Q and Vash show up on DS9 for heaven knows what
reason!! Apparently they'd been in the Gamma
quadrant and Dax picked them up and brought them
back to the station!! With their arrival, Vash
also brings several artifacts and Quark helps set
up an auction! Two side stories: one is that Vash
is trying to get rid of Q, and the other is that
the station is getting pulled in to the wormhole
with no explanation of why or how!!
This episode has, in order of appearance: Dr. Bashir,
Commander Sisko, Major Kira, Chief O'Brien, Lt.
Commander Dax, Quark, Morn & Odo!
And here we have John DeLancie's(Q) only appearance on
DS9! A
EPISODE 7: DAX(Feb. 14, 1993):
Dax has been picked up by bounty hunters for an
apparent warrent out for her for treason and murder!!
This episode has, in order of appearance: Lt. Commander
Dax, Dr. Bashir, Commander Sisko, Major Kira, Odo,
Quark & Morn!! A-
EPISODE 8: THE PASSENGER(Feb. 22, 1993):
Kira and Julian come accross a ship in distress
and stop to help out!! One of the two occupants
(a prisoner)dies, but not before he makes his "escape"!!
Along with this is a very important shipment of
very expensive drugs that are earmarked to help a
race that will die without it!!
This episode has, in order of appearance: Major Kira,
Dr. Bashir, Quark, Lt. Commander Dax, Odo & Commander
Sisko!! A-
EPISODE 9: MOVE ALONG HOME(Mar. 14, 1993):
The station gets the "honor" of hosting a new race
that the Vulcan's have had the first contact with!
They have no interest of formalities, they just
want to play at Quark's!! Quark of course being the
honest man he is, gets caught cheating and the guests
challenge him to a new, "honest" game!! This effects
most of the officers of the station!!
Like "The Game" in Star Trek: The Next Generation,
this is incredibly silly!!!
Starring, in order of appearance, Jake Sisko, Commander
Sisko, Major Kira, Dr. Bashir, Lt. Commander Dax,
Quark & Odo!! B
EPISODE 10: THE NAGUS(Mar. 21, 1993):
This is another piece of fluff, with the Ferengi Grand
Nexus Zed visisting DS9 for an important meeting of
Ferengis!! Things take a sudden turn and Quark becomes
the next Nagus!! What he doesn't know is that there are
people out to get rid of him!! On a side note, Keiko
is still on Earth and Miles is filling in for her! Nog's
father Rom is put in a position where he is ridiculed
for his son being in an "Earth school", so he forbides
Nog to go anymore!! Jake then starts rebelling against
his father and just when Ben's ready to have Jake's
head......
This episode has, in order of appearance: Jake Sisko,
Commander Sisko, Quark, Rom, Nog, Morn(he comes the
the closest to talking in this - he laughs!!), Chief
O'Brien, Odo, Dr. Bashir & Lt. Commander Dax!!
Guest starring here as the Grand Nagus is Wallace Shawn,
who played Vizzini in The Princess Bride and has one of
the funniest scenes in motion picture history!! B+
EPISODE 11: VORTEX(Apr. 18, 1993):
A being from the Gamma quadrant gets involved with
Quark and a couple of traders when he breaks into a
meeting between them and tries to take a "bauble"
that they are trying to sell!! One of them gets killed
and the remaining one vows to kill him if it's the
last thing he does! Meanwhile, it turns out that the
dude is wanted back on his own planet and they want
him back there! Complicating the whole thing is the
fact that said dude has a necklace with a little piece
of a substance that seems to mimick the properties that
Odo posseses!!
This episode has, in order of appearance: Quark, Odo,
Morn, Nog, Commander Sisko, Chief O'Brien, Lt. Commander
Dax, Major Kira & Dr. Bashir!! A-
EPISODE 12: BATTLE LINES(Apr. 25, 1993):
While showing Kai Opaka the wormhole and the Gamma
quadrant, the shuttle that they are on gets attacked
by a satalite orbiting around a desolate planet, which
results in the wreck of said shuttle stranding Sisko,
Opaka and Narys on the planet!! I won't give anything
away directly, but can we say "Let That Be Your Last
Battlefield"??
This episode has, in order of appearance: Chief O'Brien,
Commander Sisko, Lt. Commander Dax, Major Kira,
Dr. Bashir, Lt. Yar, Dr. Crusher & Lt. Worf!! A
EPISODE 13: THE STORYTELLER(May 2, 1993):
Sisko is asked to mediate between two feuding clans
from Bajor, all over a piece of land that, when a
river changed it's course, changed the boundries
between the two!! Meanwhile, on Bajor, O'Brien and
Bashir are called upon to help out when an elderly
leader becomes very ill and that threatens the existance
of the rest of the village!
Except for the extremely pretty young leader of one
of the two clans that Jake and Nog are head over heels
in lust of, this has very little to offer in the terms
of story line!!
This episode has, in order of appearance: Major Kira,
Commander Sisko, Lt. Commander Dax, Chief O'Brien,
Dr. Bashir, Quark, Nog, Jake Sisko, Chief Odo & Morn!! B-
EPISODE 14: PROGRESS(May 9, 1993):
The main story line here is about Kira beaming down
to a planet that's supposed to be uninhabited but
life forms are detected!! The planet is going to be
mined, and anyone on it is in jeopordy of being killed,
but they refuse to leave!
The secondary story is about Jake and Nog doing some
behind the scenes bartering!!
This is a really good episode!!
This episode has, in order of appearance: Quark, Jake Sisko,
Rom, Dax, Chief O'Brien, Major Kira, Morn, Commander Sisko &
Chief Odo!!
Guest starring in this is the great Brian Keith(Family
Affair, several Disney movies)! A
EPISODE 15: IF WISHES WERE HORSES(May 16, 1993):
At first glance this looks like a piece of fluff! However,
there's some really good moments in it! People are seeing
people that they shouldn't see, or in Bashir's case, that
they really want to see!! Much better than I would've thought!!
This episode has, in order of appearance: Quark, Odo, Rom,
Nog, Lt. Commander Dax, Dr. Bashir, Commander Sisko,
Major Kira, Chief O'Brien, Molly O'Brien & Keiko O'Brien!! A-
EPISODE 16: THE FORSAKEN(May 23, 1993):
A few things going on here: visiting ambassadors, an
unexplained probe, Lwaxana Troi man hunting with Odo
& an unruly computer!!!
This episode has, in order of appearance: Dr. Bashir,
Quark, Chief Odo, Chief O'Brien, Commander Sisko, Major
Kira & Lt. Commander Dax!!
This has Deanna Troi's mommy, Lwaxana's(Majel Barrett)
first appearance in it!! A
EPISODE 17: DRAMATIS PERSONAE(May 30, 1993):
A ship carrying a Klingon comes through the wormhole
and explodes, but not before the occupant beams himself
on board the station! Also happening, there's a ship
needing to dock at the station which Kira has reservations
about, and begins to be very adament to stop them from
docking! And there's just one more thing, everyone on
board the ship starts to be very combative!! Hmmm, sounds
kinda like the ST: TOS episode "Day Of The Dove"!!
This episode has, in order of appearance: Commander Sisko,
Major Kira, Lt. Commander Dax, Chief O'Brien, Chief Odo,
Dr. Bashir, Quark & Morn!! A-
EPISODE 18: DUET(June 13, 1993):
A Cardassian comes aboard the station who has an
ailment that could only be caught in a Bajor concentraion
camp & Kira is out after vengeance!!
This episode has, in order of appearance: Major Kira,
Lt. Commander Dax, Commander Sisko, Dr. Bashir, Chief Odo
& Chief O'Brien!! A
EPISODE 19: IN THE HANDS OF THE PROPHETS(June 20, 1993):
So the religeous cult of the Bajorans even have
their snake in the grasses!! Vedek Winn is in the
process of trying to eliminate her biggest threat
to becoming Kai, Vedek Beriel!! And she's causing
much grief to Keiko and the school!!
Also going on here is that there's been a murder
on the station that seems pretty odd, and there's
a new Bajoran officer(female) assigned to
O'Brien's command and she seems to be more than
a little smitten with him!!
This episode has, in order of appearance: Chief O'Brien,
Keiko O'Brien, Jake Sisko, Vedek Winn, Commander Sisko,
Major Kira, Lt. Dax, Chief Odo, Vedek Bereil, Dr. Bashir,
Quark & Morn.
The first appearance of both Vedek(soon to be Kai)
Winn and Vedek Bereil! A

From an IMDb.com customer:
I just recently bought the DVDs for my son because
we had just finished watching STNG on DVD. I have
tried to get into this show but I just can't. I
don't feel the acting is up to par of STNG. I
actually liked the optimistic, TNG. I am already
tired of the politics of DS9; tired of the
Cardassians, tired of the prophets and tired
of the Ferengi. I can't imagine watching 5 more
seasons with my son! I just may have to relegate
the show to my playroom. However, I miss Picard,
I miss Riker, Data, Geordi, Troi and Dr. Crusher.
That show felt like family. I can't even relate
to this cast. My favorite of the DS9 cast is Dr.
Bashir. He's just such a cutie.
I can see why this show polarized fans. You either
love it or you don't. I'm hoping the seasons get
better (I've read they do)but my enjoyment of this
show pales in comparison to TNG, which did have
dark episodes. They just weren't the primary focus,
thank God. - KittyMurray12
