SUPERBOY(1988) SEASON 2
First things first, there are no English subtitles in this!!!! BOOOOOOO!!!!
The second season sees a few changes, one major one!! Superboy
is just not himself!!! LOL!! They kicked off John Haymes Newton and
replaced him with Gerald Christopher!! Also gone is T.J. White(Perry's
nephew played by Jaime Calvert, and photographer for the newpaper)!!
I'll have to watch these as I don't know how this turn of events
helped/hurt the show!!
EPISODES 1: WITH THIS RING I THEE KILL(Oct. 7, 1989):
Ok, so they explain the different Lex Luthor by saying he scarred up
his face, changed his voice and dissed his fingerprints by burning
them all off!! Anyway, for the story, Lex is determined to destroy
Superboy, with a "super weapon" named after him!! So much so
that he kills the dude that created the weapon and changed his face
to his!! This was a horrible change in character!!!
They introduce a new character here named Andy McAllister(Ilan
Mitchel Smith) who is quite annoying!!
As a side note, they explain T.J.'s absence in that he has gone to
work for his uncle, Perry White!!
This is not starting off on the right foot!!
Continues in "Lex Luthor, Sentenced To Death"! B-
EPISODE 2: LEX LUTHOR, SENTENCED TO DEATH(Oct. 14, 1989):
With Superboy presumed dead, Lex continues on with his plan
to marry Lana!! This has SOOOOOOOOOO many plot holes in
it!! Superboy's supposed to be paralyzed from the waist down
which, of course, we all know is absolutely impossible!!
Another thing, I don't know who the Hell this is aimed at audience
wise, but in this we have strippers, an escort service, an electrocution
and basically a very PG type show that shouldn't be on at a time when
kids would watch it!! And the acting, is really, REALLY bad!!!!! C
EPISODE 3: METALLO(Oct. 21, 1989):
While trying to pull off a bank heist, a dude has a heart attack
trying to get away!! Superboy stops him, and takes him to the
hospital! He kills a doctor and gets away, only to have a car
accident!! He finds his way to a mad scientist who finds him after
the accident and turns him into Metallo, half man half robot!!
He uses some Kryptonite to power the dudes cyborg suit, which
of course he uses against Superboy!! B
EPISODE 4: YOUNG DRACULA(Oct. 28, 1989):
Superboy takes on vampires in this one!! A young boy helps
Lana out, and she and Superboy run into him a couple of times,
then another dude comes along and tries to take over!! This is
terrible!! D
EPISODE 5: NIGHTMARE ISLAND(Nov. 4, 1989):
Ok, this starts out with a reference to Donald Trump, and you
just know this can't be a good thing!! Anyway, Clark, Lana and
Andy go out on a boat, get stranded on an island, Superboy
loses his powers by a caveman, Lana gets kidnapped by the
same caveman, and the rest is, well you know!! While still bad,
this is a little better than the last few episodes!!
Oh, did I mention that the caveman is a midget alien??!!! B-
EPISODE 6: BIZARRO...THE THING OF STEEL(Nov. 11, 1989):
First things first, they re-write the origin of the Bizarros!! Ok, so
a mad scientist(is there any other kind in this series?), creates a
duplicating machine that doesn't quite work right! It duplicates,
but a distorted replica comes out! It hits Superboy, and voila
we have Bizarro!! Sadly, all he wants to do is make friends, but
everyone is scared of him and runs away! At least this part of
the story is true to the comics!
As these go on and on, Stacy Haiduk's acting never seems to
get any better!!
This continues in "The Battle With Bizarro"! B
EPISODE 7: THE BATTLE WITH BIZARRO(Nov. 18, 1989):
Bizarro decides that Lana needs to be his girlfriend, takes her
to a store that he calls their home, and tries to make life all
better!! Meanwhile, back at the lab, Clark and Prof. Peterson
are looking for an answer on how to take care of Bizarro!!
They hatch a plan to use Kryptonite, but it doesn't work,
because it needs to be duplicated the same way Bizarro
was, but it will take a long time to create it!! Problems,
problems!! B
EPISODE 8: MR. AND MRS. SUPERBOY(Nov. 25, 1989):
Returning here is Mr. Mxyzptlk!! He's here to cause mischief,
along with a giant who's after him for, welp, we don't know why!
This of course gets Superboy in the middle of the whole mess!
And the only way they can solve the issue is to pretend they're
married and that Mxyzptlk is their son!!
This guest stars the returning Michael J. Pollard(Star Trek: TOS
episode "Miri") and Richard Kiel(James Bond movies The Spy
Who Loved Me & Moonraker as Jaws!!)!!
A huge faux pas here: Andy is at the "Superboy's" household and
as he's leaving he says, "Clark I can see it's probably the wrong
time and I'm probably bugging you so why don't I amscray huh!!"
He says this to Superboy!!!!! This is really kinda dorky!!!!! B
EPISODE 9: PROGRAMMED FOR DEATH(Dec. 2, 1989):
Andy's dad calls him up and asks him to come and help him out,
but when he gets there, all he sees is a robot that knocks him
out!! Andy's dad, on the other hand, goes to Clark and Lana to
ask for help to find Andy!! Turns out that the robot is out after
Superboy and Andy's dad, no idea why!!
Guest starring here is George Maharis(Route 66) as Andy's
dad!!
This appears to be a set up for George to be a recurring guest
star here that never came to fruition!! B
EPISODE 10: SUPERBOY'S DEADLY TOUCH(Dec. 9, 1989):
Oh, goody!! Lex Luthor is back and as bad acting as always!! Lex
shows up as a nun whose bus is in trouble, Superboy stops to
help, and Lex hits him with some kind of ray!! When he come to,
he suddenly can't control his powers!! The idea here is that Lex
will blackmail Superboy to get a full pardon from the governor!! C
EPISODE 11: THE POWER OF EVIL(Dec. 16, 1989):
A sacred box is broken, and the evil inside is released onto the
world!! This leaves Superboy to put it back!!
Guest starring Keye Luke(Charlie Chan's #1 son in the Charlie
Chan movies from the thirties and forties)!! A-
EPISODE 12: SUPERBOY...REST IN PEACE(Dec. 30, 1989):
A dudette android from the future goes back in time to meet up with
Clark Kent to help him against an android that's gone back to kill him!!
This is another episode that suffers from being too short!! B+
EPISODE 13: SUPER MENACE!(Jan. 13, 1990):
So, another variation from the cannon!! Red Kryptonite is the story
in this one, created here on Earth instead of in space as in the lore!!
Anyway, in his first exposure to the Kryptonite, he becomes a bad ass!!
The military turns to Metallo, in hopes that he'll bring him to justice!
Only problem is, the two team up instead!! B
EPISODE 14: YELLOW PERI'S SPELL OF DOOM(Jan. 20, 1990):
A young lady has the hots for Superboy, so she goes out and gets a
magic doll, calls on a spell, and voila, she becomes a vivacious babe
and she goes out and casts a spell on Superboy!! B+
EPISODE 15: MICROBOY(Jan. 27, 1990):
There's a new superhero in town: Microboy! A shy dude that wants
to catch the eye of a pretty girl!! Only things don't go so well, and
instead of a superhero, we get a supervillain!! B+(only because of
the ending)!!
EPISODE 16: RUN, DRACULA, RUN(Feb. 3, 1990):
If one story about Dracula was good, this should be great!! Only
problem is, the first one wasn't all that great to begin with!! In
this one, Byron loses his serum, and is reverting back to a
vampire!! He takes Lana and tries to turn her, and then Superboy,
to the "dark side"!! B
EPISODE 17: BRIMSTONE(Feb. 10, 1990):
More sword and sorcery, a madman is going around cutting people
with his nails, which in turn makes them mad!! He slashes Andy, and
just when all looks dark, along comes a guy on a motorcycle and gives
him a serum that cures him! Guy's name is Brimstone, and Superboy
gets slashed(another impossibility), and commands him to go out
after Brimstone to kill him!!
Guest starring here is Philip Michael Thomas(Miami Vice, Perry Mason
Movie: The Case Of The Ruthless Reporter)!! A-
EPISODE 18: ABANDON EARTH(Feb. 17, 1990):
"Jor-El" and "Lara", the parents of of Kal-El(Clark Kent/Superboy), show
up on Earth to bring Kal-El back "home" with them!!! But there is obviously
something wrong here, and the Kents are feeling it!!
Of course, there is no way any of this could be true, as Kal-El was
sent to Earth by his parents from Krypton because it was going to
explode!! They perished in that explosion!!
Stuart Whitman returns as Pa Kent, and also in this we have George
Lazenby(Bond, James Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service) as
Jor-El, and Britt Ekland(The James Bond movie "The Man With The
Golden Gun", Elvis Presley's "G.I. Blues") as Lara!!
By far the best episode to date!! Continued in "Escape To Earth"! A
EPISODE 19: ESCAPE TO EARTH(Feb. 24, 1990):
As the truth comes out about Jor-El and Lara, it becomes necessary
for Superboy to use his powers as Clark to get him, Lana and Andy
back to Earth, because he's been stripped of his suit!!
Not quite as good as the last episode!! B+
EPISODE 20: SUPERSTAR(Mar. 3, 1990):
A female singer is being hunted and doesn't know it!! Clark and
crew are trying to get an interview! Clark gets in to see her, but
suddenly she's almost run over by a runaway car! Superboy saves
her and gets an interview with Clark, but when he shows up to
the interview, he runs into a different person calling herself Jessica
James(the singer)! Turns out that the person he meets is a singer
from the past who was in a plane crash and got deformed!!
This one has Mickeys daughter, Ami Dolenz!! B
EPISODE 21: NICK KNACK(Apr. 14, 1990):
A dude breaks out of jail and determined to steal Superboy's
powers to fuel a suit he's made to make him super!! OMG this
is stupid, bad, horrible!!
Guest starring Gilbert Gottfried(comedian - SNL)!! D-
EPISODE 22: THE HAUNTING OF ANDY McALISTER(Apr. 21, 1990):
The trio are off to a vacation at Andy's uncle's mansion! A great
idea if you like horror stories!! The three get sucked into a time
vortex back to an old west ghost town, and they have to figure
out how to get back to their world!! While not a great episode,
this is at least fun!! B
EPISODE 23: REVENGE FROM THE DEEP(Apr. 28, 1990):
A scorned woman's spirit comes back to get revenge by taking
over Lana's body and going after the dude that left her! Think
really bad Aquaman!! B
EPISODE 24: SECRETS OF SUPERBOY(May 5, 1990):
OMG, Nick Knack is back!! He's created a new game system to
make people do what he wants(this is a Gameboy)! This has
flashbacks to the other stupid episode that had him in it! He
wants to put Superboy's friends in a device that will drain their
memories so he can find out all of Superboy's secrets!!! Several
other flashbacks to previous episodes about his weaknesses!!
After some thought, I think this character could have been a lot
better with someone else in the role, like Frank Gorshin, Jack
Nicholson or me!!!! D-
EPISODE 25: JOHNNY CASANOVA
AND THE CASE OF THE SECRET SERUM(May 12, 1990):
A man steals a potion and gives it to his brother just before he
dies!! The potion makes him a total slob that's irresistible
to women, which includes Lana and men can't seem to see
him for who he really is!!! Only problem is he appears to
not be able to control it, as he changes back to his real, extremely
handsome self! But the potion was stolen from the mob, and they
want it back!!
This is done in a real film noir way, with Casanova acting like
an old time gum shoe, and the music from years of yore!!! B+
EPISODE 26: THE WOMAN CALLED TIGER EYE(May 19, 1990):
The last episode of season 2! In this, what appears to be a bag
lady gets hold of mysterious crystal that she puts with several
others and give her ultimate power! She's really a sorceress
and she needs Superboy to be able to fuse all the crystals
together!! She captures Lana and turns her into a snake to
lure Superboy to her!! B
THERE ARE NO SPECIALS IN THIS SET!!
From another reviewer at IMDb.com:
the flash was a pretty good adaptation of the
comic books and it really is a shame that it got
canceled so fast . the acting was pretty good
and the characters were pretty close to their
paper counterparts. all in all a decent show
and a better adaptation of a comic book into
a series than any other so far ( that includes
the not too bad but too girlie adaptation of
superboy in WB's smallville ) - ruthven1974
