THE SAINT DOUBLE FEATURE:
THE SAINT'S VACATION(1941):
I was really hoping that this wouldn't be a
huge let-down after watching the George Sanders'
Saint movies!! It wasn't huge, but it was big!
Hugh Sinclair took over the mantle after George
turned his attention to the Falcon movies, and
he's ok, just not as suave as George, and there's
definitely something else missing here, just
can't put my finger on it!! Maybe it's the pacing,
or perhaps his co-stars, but it just doesn't
have the same punch!! Not a terrible movie,
just not as good as the previous five!! B
A review from IMDb.com:
"The Saint's Vacation" moves along briskly.
The fast pace enhances what would otherwise
be a pretty typical B-mystery of the era.
The incandescent Sally Gray is at her peak
here and she is the main reason you don't
want to miss this movie. Wow- blonde hair,
vivaciousness, overall screen presence, but
mostly her magnificent voice. One of the
best screen voices (female or male) ever
to grace the screen in 1940 or any era.
You can't take your eyes (or ears) off her.
She was truly one of the all time screen
babes.
The film also features the "inevitable"
Cecil Parker (I call him inevitable because
of his participation in so many good British
films such as "The Lady Vanishes").
Sinclair was no way comparable to the rakish
George Sanders but is adequate as the Saint
here, livened as he is by being forced to go
at the fast pace required in this story. A
competent actor.
You should catch this non-classic because
of the vibrant screen presence of Sally Gray.
For sheer screen "Presence"- that often alluded
to but seldom describable factor- whatever it
is Ms. Gray had it. - Panamint

Better than the first movie with Sinclair,
but still not quite up to the excellence of
the Sanders films!! This one's about gold
and a bunch of crooks trying to smuggle it
out of the country!! B+
A review from IMDb.com:
When you deposit a body on Simon Templar's
doorstep what else can you expect but that
the Saint will get involved. But on which
side of the law?
In an opening that was taken from The Maltese
Falcon when Captain Jacoby arrives on Sam
Spade's door dying and with the falcon, Simon
TEmplar has a similar experience and before
long is involved in exposing a smuggling racket.
He's got competition though, another master
criminal called the Tiger, identity unknown,
is also cutting himself in on the plans. We're
not sure who's with who except that Scotland
Yard has an undercover man as well.
This is the second of two films that Hugh
Sinclair starred in as Simon Templar over in
Great Britain. This one's not as good as the
first though Sinclair makes one breezy Saint.
The story line is kind of muddled though that
could be bad editing.
For fans of the series only. - bkoganbing
