THE THIN MAN:(1934)
This starts the series of 6 movies starring William
Powell and Myrna Loy! Powell plays Nick Charles
who use to be a detective but gave it up when he
married rich Nora!! An old friend's father disappears
and she goes to Nick to try to get him to help her!!
He says no way cause he's retired, but he gets sucked
into the whole mess anyway!! A
A review from IMDb.com:
Everyone seems to fit in the cast for this movie and
it is a pretty large cast. William Powell and Myrna Loy
as Mr and Mrs Nick Charles come to New York for a
vacation and literally get dragged into a murder case.
All the characters that drag them in seem to have
problems of their own. What is amazing is how many
plots and sub plots are in the script for a relatively
short film and yet how things are sorted out by the end.
Being the time it is, the plot is about an odd inventor
who vanishes and then over 3 months is blamed for
killing several people even though no one has seen
them. This thin man (Nick Charles) is literally dragged
into this and his curious wife Nora keeps getting her
nose into it by accident.
The ending is the classic dinner party where all the
suspects are gathered by Charles and served fish.
Things get tense and pretty formal until the solution
presents itself. The film is complicated, stylish, and
well made for this era. The cast is top notch and the
pacing are perfect.
For anyone who wants to go back to 1934, this is
a great example of how well made a mystery film
could be made from Dashiell Hammett's
book. - getyourdander

A review from IMDb.com:
Although this film was released in 1936, it is as
entertaining and fresh today as ever, and is certainly
much better than any of the over-long and over-produced
movies that Hollywood produces today. This is the second
in the excellent "Thin Man" series and the viewer can see
that the series is really in full stride. The delightful cast
of street types who are old friends and cronies of Nick's
are a joy to watch. The interplay between William Powell
and Myrna Loy has never been matched and is to be
treasured. What a great surprise for me to see Penny
Singelton, who later played "Blondie" in that long
running series. Ms. Singelton sings and dances up
a storm as a cabaret performer and she is an integral
character in the plot of this engrossing "whodunnit".
Another nice surprise for me was seeing Jimmy Stewart
in one of his earlier roles. He definitely had leading man
type looks. As per usual, Powell, as Nick Charles, unmasks
the murderer in the climatic scene where all suspects,
the police, and assorted others are present. In most
movies, I tend to find pets rather annoying as they
distract from the plot of the film. But, for me, Asta
is the one exception to this thesis. He is so entertaining
and no Thin Man movie would be complete without
his antics. In summary, all I can say is that this is a
SUPERB film. Catch it on Turner Classic Movies or
find a video at your' favorite store or online
retailer. - Ron Revere

A review from an IMDb.com customer:
In this third installment of the "Thin Man" series,
Nick and Nora--and baby Nickie, Jr.!--become involved
in a convoluted murder mystery. It involves a business
partner of Nora's father. There are suspects galore
and a riot of clues that are thrust on the viewer who
is determined to solve the mystery first. But before
Nick assembles all of the suspects and unravels the
mystery for all to see, we might now agree that the
identity of the murderer is irrelevant.
Yes, like Hitchcock's McGuffin, the story and its
particulars are fairly irrelevant to the film, which
is really a vehicle for Nick and Nora to exchange
playful banter and sport their devil-may-care
attitudes in the face of danger. And the banter in
this film gets high marks for its cleverness, keeping
the film light-hearted at every turn.
Among the other actors are a few worth noticing--Sheldon
Leonard in only his second credited role in a feature
film, Marjorie Main as a funny landlady, and Shemp
Howard who is uncredited.
But William Powell and Myrna Loy really shine in
their roles, thanks to their glib delivery and some
smart writing. - atlasmb

A review from IMDb.com:
Fourth in the fabulous Thin Man series has Nick &
Nora investigating a murder at a race track. Also
in this one is the ever-adorable dog Asta and the
Charles' young son Nicky. The Thin Man series
was a cut above the other detective films from
the '30s and '40s. Even though this fourth film
isn't the series' best, it's still a great watch. William
Powell and Myrna Loy are both flawless as usual.
They still have that undeniable chemistry we all
love. The supporting cast includes Donna Reed,
Barry Nelson, Sam Levene, Louise Beavers, and
famed acting teacher Stella Adler in a rare film
appearance. Highlights include Nora at the
wrestling match, Nick being forced to drink
milk, the old lady with the radio, and colorful
characters like Meatballs Murphy, Spider Webb,
and Rainbow Benny. A fun movie that fans of
the series will love. - utgard14

A review from IMDb.com:
This was the last of the Thin Man movies for me. I
wasn't expecting much simply because it was so late
in the series...
...but, the movie delivered. Nick stayed off the
sauce; however, instead of leaving a hole in the
movie, it added comedy throughout. There was a
different feel to this movie...but, Nick Charles
had to come from SOMEWHERE.
The part of Nick's father is well-done. I would
imagine that there is a temptation to make the
character an exaggeration, but the part is played
with some subtlety.
No baby in this one. If you can only see five
minutes of this movie, go to the Story of Stinky
Davis, as told by Nora Charles. It is a
riot... - masercot

No fooling around in this one, it gets right to the
heart of the movie! Oh, there's still a lot of humor,
but this one's a bit more serious than most of the
others! All about musicians, hoods and the Charles'! A-
This last entry has a couple of more extras:
Movie short: Passing Parade - A Really Important Person;
Cartoon: "Slap Happy Lion"
A review from IMDb.com:
Good mystery comedy movie that was certainly carried
by the lead stars. The production was average and the
script was not as good as the previous THIN MAN films.
Still delivers the basics of the genre though so if
you are a fan of the THIN MAN films or a big fan of
comedy mysteries or a big fan of the lead stars here,
you will like this movie...... - kenandraf
