VAN DAMME, JEAN-CLAUDE 4 MOVIE COLLECTION :

4 movies starring Jean-Claude Van Damme!

HARD TARGET(1993):

This does not start out the rough and tumble type of movie that you
expect from Van Damme!! Although there are portions that do
have action and fighting scenes, the first half of this movie is more
story driven than most other JCVD's movies! However, the ending is
quite a different story indeed!! In this we have some really bad
dudes that will sell anyone who wants to hunt humans the chance
to do so! The targets here are Vets that are down on their luck,
and will do almost anything for money!! A pretty hard movie to
watch if you happen to be a Vet, or at least have a heart for those
that served their country!! And I gotta say, this really doesn't make
a person comfortable to go and visit New Orleans!!

This has one of my all-time favorite "character actors" in it:
Wilford Brimley(High Road To China, The Wild Wild West Revisited,
The Natural, Cocoon, Ewoks: The Battle For Endor, Cocoon 2:
The Return, Crossfire Trail!)! He's just a great actor that can do
most any kind of movie: Western, action, historical and even Sci-Fi!! A-

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

Mulleted drifter Chance Boudreaux (Jean-Claude Van Damme)
is hired by a woman (Yancy Butler) to help her look for her
missing father. They discover he was killed by a group that
hunts homeless men for sport. Another variation on The Most
Dangerous Game, but a pretty good one thanks to John Woo's
stylish direction and an enjoyable cast. Van Damme's cheesy
as all-get-out with his mullet, rolled-up jacket sleeves, and thick
accent but he's lots of fun to watch. Lance Henriksen makes
for a slimy villain. Nice to see a young and pretty Yancy Butler
before her troubles took their toll. Wilford Brimley's great as
usual. It's one of Van Damme's better movies, given an A budget
and a good director for a change. - utgard14

STREET FIGHTER(1994):

I read a lot of reviews from IMDb.com and from them I gathered
that this was not a great movie!! My problem is that this came
from an 80's game that I never played, so I had no point of reference
as to whether it held true to the game and caught the feel of the
game!! Well, whether it did or not, I can't say! What I can say is that
this is strictly a farce of a movie, which most of the actors are really
hamming it up!! This has absolutely no serious part to it, and is
strictly a movie for fun!! In that, it succeeds!! Don't expect Gone
With The Wind, think more Escape From L.A.! Worth one watch
anyway!! B-

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

I don't understand how you can seriously write a bad review
for this movie (or any JCVD movie for that matter). It's based
on an 8-bit video game from the 1980s that has a witch doctor
who breathes fire and stretches his limbs twice the length of
his body, a Chinese schoolgirl who kicks at the speed of sound,
and a radioactive electricity monster with orange spikes for
hair. You wanted a Gary Oldman-esque performance from
Jean Claude? You were expecting less random objects to explode
for no reason? Maybe more verisimilitude when it comes to
geopolitical crises? Come on. Have a sense of humor. This is
one of the most fun films you'll ever see as long as you don't
try to take it seriously. - zoltanvaci

SUDDEN DEATH(1995):

First, knowing nothing about hockey, I don't know for sure
that the hockey players are THE actual hockey players, as
I've never heard of any of them!!! Second, I don't like hockey!!
Third, you really have to abandon all belief to feel that any of
this could be true!!!! Now, for the movie!!!

The premise: It's the seventh game of the Stanley Cup Finals,
Chicago vs. Pittsburgh, the Vice President is there, along with
16,000+ other people, including Van Damme & his two kids, a
girl and a boy!! The girl gets dragged into a plan to hold the
whole stadium hostage until they get 1.5 billion dollars!!!
Otherwise, they will kill one person at the end of each of the
first two periods, then everyone else at the end of the game!!!

An aside here, in 1991, the Pittsburgh Penguins actually did
meet up with the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup
finals, beating them in seven games!!

A pretty decent film really, though, as most reviewers at
IMDb. com have commented on, this is pretty much the
same idea as Die Hard!! Just not quite as good!! B+

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

You Can Count on a Peter Hyams Movie to Look Sharp with
a Sort of Dazzle and Style Expected from a Director of
Photography Turned Director. You Can Count on a Van
Damme Movie to be, Well, a Van Damme Movie.

So No One Seeing this Should be Surprised at what They
Get. A Good Looking No Brainy Actiony Thingy. This One
was Made Back when This Type was Rated R, Mostly for
Violence, and there were No Qualms about Putting Children
in Direct Danger and Kicking and Shooting Some Serious Butt.

But at the Time there were a Lot of Formulaic Films, and
that's OK Because if it Works it Works, and this was Part
of a Group of Die-Hard Followups that by this Time were
Starting to Wear Out Their Welcome. It Flopped Domestically.

But the Movie is Big Budget Fun and if You Like JCVD or
Hockey or Both this Ones for You. For Action Fans it has
that R Rated Edge and Never Stops being Entertaining.
Not a Lot of Logic but Loads of Laughs and Some Very
Cold Villains. - LeonLouisRicci

THE QUEST(1996):

This caught me off guard!! I expected just another wham, bam
kind of movie, with little plot and a lot of action! Well, there was
a lot of action with some pretty good fighting scenes. However,
this had much more of a plot than I ever expected!!! And it was
very well put together! Kind of a cross between any Indiana Jones
movie, High Road To China, and Big Trouble In Little China!!
All great movies, and surprisingly this one will go in my books as
one that fits in very well with all of these!! And I really had my
doubts about what in the world Roger Moore was doing in this!!
I mean, come on, BOND, JAMES BOND??? Well, another great
surprise is that he fit in this movie so well that I can't imagine
anyone else in his role, of which he did a superb job!! Great movie!! A

From a reviewer from IMDb.com:

This film wasn't too bad considering it was directed and
cowritten by star Jean-Claude Van Damme. The movie starts
off in the 1920's with Van Damme dressed as a clown wearing
stilts working with street orphans to steal some money from
gangsters. He escapes from gangsters before being chased
by the police onto a ship. The next morning, out to sea, the
ship owners chain up the stowaway and put him to work.
Shortly after the ship is ambushed by British cavaliers, led
by Roger Moore, which free him only to bring him to an island
and sell him to the Mutai to be a fighter.

The action quickly changes from an adventure story to a
video-game movie the likes of Tekken. All of the best fighters
in the world are invited to fight in a tournament at the Lost
City for the prize of Golden Dragon and honor. The fighters
are acted by real fighting champions from around the world.
Each brings his own fighting style resulting in some satisfying
matches which are the saving grace of the film.

This film would have been much improved with plot twists
and more attention paid the the back story of Van Damme's
orphaned past to gain a better appreciation of why the fighting
is so important to him.

4/10 -- diverse fighting but poor plot and not enough one
liners. - mod_boy (m_o_d_b_o_y@yahoo.com) mod_boy (m_o_d_b_o_y@yahoo.com)
